There’s finally a chance that The New York Times will be held accountable for lying to the American people. The Trump campaign just filed a lawsuit against the Times for a 2019 article that falsely claimed the campaign had “an overarching deal” with “Vladimir Putin’s oligarchy” to “help the campaign against Hillary Clinton” in exchange for “a new pro-Russian foreign policy, starting with relief from the Obama administration’s burdensome economic sanctions.”
The Times peddled a wild, baseless conspiracy theory, yet the author, who spent nearly a decade as the Times’s executive editor, simply presented his politically-motivated assumptions as unassailable fact. My Take - Do I believe this will succeed? No. Do I believe the Trump team thinks this will succeed? No. It's been pretty much established the press can say just about anything they wish about public figures, especially politicians.
Having said that, I think we may have to understand what the Trump team considers a success. If this gets into court NYT employees will have to testify, and do so truthfully, and when that happens it will expose them for the corrupt liars they are. That's the goal in my opinion, and the public impact will be devastating. Potentially putting a newspaper with a declining reader and advertiser base out of business.
