Can understanding epigenetics help stave off 6th mass species extinction?

|

We are—depending on who you ask—either on the brink of or in the thralls of Earth’s sixth mass species extinction. What is not in doubt is that just one species deserves most of the blame: Homo sapiens—aka us.

Human activity is warming our climate and many species are failing to adapt; experts predict that as a result, by the end of the century as many as one in six species will be in danger of extinction.
Mammals are going extinct at rates faster than ever, as are other vertebrates. While invertebrates like coral are being hit even harder. Overall, rates of species extinction are accelerating to the point where they may soon rival those during the mass extinction event that killed almost all of the dinosaurs (Birds, which are descendants of dinosaurs, are one of the few remaining species from the Mesozoic era).

Many in the scientific community are studying the effects of climate change on organisms in an attempt to see what, if anything, can be done to stave off this extinction crisis. One avenue that has produced interesting results: what we’ve learned from studying epigenetic changes in different species that may be due to the changing climate.....To Read More....

My Take - Okay....we already know this piece has some problems simply because he's part of the Global Warming school of junk science.

We need to get over this idea we have some obligation to "save" species. Over 95% of all species that have existed are extinct, and every species now living will go extinct. Extinction is not the exception - it's the rule. Those species that have gone extinct have done so because they're biologically incompetent - and should go extinct - and then be replaced by competent species.

We're told if some species or other goes extinct the biodiversity of the world will be so out of balance the world is doooooomed. Horsepucky!  There is no balance in the world’s biodiversity, and there never has been - it’s in a constant state of flux.  Name one terrible thing that happened when the dodo bird went extinct. You can't! Why? Because nothing happened.

People like E.O. Wilson have made claims such as "We're in the midst of the Earth’s sixth mass extinction crisis.” and “estimates that 30,000 species per year (or three species per hour) are being driven to extinction." “Estimates" mind you!  Estimates aren’t data!  They’re guesses....and in his case as so many scientists ..... estimates driving a political philosophy!  He's been asked to name them. He can't!  Why?   Because they're nothing more than speculatory electrons running around in his computer.

Sixth mass extinction?  This so-called "Sixth Extinction" is  speculation, but we know there were five previous extinctions.   Earth to green moonbats: What caused the other five?  We're they "all natural"?  Ooooops!
