8 More Coal-Fired Power Plants Set to Close

Heather Ginsberg | Nov 14, 2013

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced earlier today that it will be closing 8 coal-fired power plants. The TVA is one the country’s 5 biggest users of coal for electricity, these 8 plants creating 3,300 megawatts of electricity. This move is a decision made by executives to try and reduce coal to 20% of its total generating capacity. Two plants in Kentucky will be closed even though Senator Mitch McConnell tried to convince them not to do so in order to save jobs.  To Read More…..http://townhall.com/tipsheet/heatherginsberg/2013/11/14/8-more-coalfired-power-plants-set-to-close-n1746765

My Take – For those who know nothing about coal fired power generation this is a bigger deal than you may realize.  First, coal fire plants can’t just be ‘shut down’ because the furnaces are really hot and if they cool too fast it will ruin them.  To start them back up again it also has to be done slowly and for the same reason.  Coal is so abundant in this country that it’s beyond belief and relatively cheap.  Natural gas is now cheaper and will get even cheaper.  Are these coal fired plants going to convert to gas?  It can be done, but it’s expensive.   With the advent of fracking I don’t see how this was avoidable, but it would have been done as needed, not imposed.  Oh…one more thing!

I have some questions for the coal miners in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky, who belong to the United Mine Workers, the union that Obama’s buddy Trumka used to head before he was chosen to head up the AFL/CIO.  In 2008 Obama told the world this is what he was going to do!

Didn’t you believe him?
Did you think he was just kidding?
Do you hate coal mining?
Were you hypnotized by Trumka?
Are you glad you will lose your health plan?  I know, Trumka made a deal with Obama to leave your stuff alone, but that’s just temporary.  After you have all lost your jobs it won’t matter anymore.
Are you happy now?
