Debates Matter, or Maybe Not?

By Rich Kozlovich

I have to start out by saying I almost never watch debates because they're all just a big show with very little substance.  I liken these debates as like digging through a ton of garbage to find a rare diamond, and of the debates I've watched, darn few were moderated with even a modicum of integrity by the moderators, and based on what Ive read,  this one was no different, and maybe worse.

Matt Vespa's take on this side show carnival:

They live-fact-checked Trump five times to Harris’ zero. The microphones were not muted; they made sure to sneak in ridiculous questions, like asking about Kamala Harris’ race. It was election interference, and when MSNBC hosts and Bill Kristol are saying ABC News’ moderators are doing a good job, you know it’s trash.

From the war in Ukraine, which happened under Biden-Harris, to the spike in crime, ABC News was hell on wheels to fact-check the former president, even bizarrely getting whether Trump was being sarcastic or not. When even Trump-skeptic writers from right-leaning publications are noticing that this set-up is rigged, you know it’s bad. Megyn Kelly suggested that this would backfire.

Kamala either lied, or evaded on all issues, especially abortion, which is in reality the go to issue for Democrats, and she got a pass by that crack team of fake journalists from ABC.  As I said, a side show carnival, and it's clear Trump really isn't all that good at debating, so he didn't throw the knock out punch, but, without ABC's crack team supporting Kamala openly, it wouldn't have mattered.  The real question is: Does any of this really matter?

Personally, I would have attacked the moderators as much as I would have attacked Kamala, and before I was done, the moderators would not have liked how it turned out. No holds barred, no mercy, and all done politely!  Trump isn't very good at that, and Kamala isn't very good at anything.

The thing I will never understand is why the Republicans fall for this crap.  They've always allow the left to rig these debates. Why?  This has been described as a three to one contest, with two moderators and Kamala against Trump.  And it still was at best a wash for Kamala. However, since that crack team of ABC moderators had such an overwhelming passion to fact check Trump 7 times, and no desire to do so Kamala, I find the rest of the world wasn't so friendly, so, perhaps we should review the "facts"!

  1. She Falsely Claims She Was Raised in the Middle Class - Mostly false. Harris had a rich Canadian upbringing, growing up in Westmount — a majority English neighborhood in the French province of Quebec.
  2. Fact Check: Harris Falsely Claims Trump Would Impose A National Sales Tax - False.  Trump has never proposed a national sales tax.

  3. Fact Check: Kamala Harris Claims ‘Not One’ U.S. Troop in Any War Zone Around the World -False. There are currently active duty U.S. troops deployed to Iraq and Syria who have been under frequent attack by Iran-backed militia forces over the past year. There are also thousands of active-duty U.S. sailors deployed to the Middle East who are facing attacks by drone strikes and missiles fired by the Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen. Earlier this year, three U.S. soldiers were killed on the border of Syria by Iran-backed forces.

  4. Fact Check: Trump Says His Tariffs Did Not Create Inflation - True. Inflation was very low during Donald Trump’s presidency, including after his imposition of tariffs. In the first year of his presidency, prior to the imposition of tariffs, the consumer price index rose by 2.13 percent. In 2018, consumer prices rose by two percent. In 2020, prices rose by 2.5 percent. In 2021, prices rose by just 1.3 percent.

  5. Fact Check: Kamala Harris Claims She Supports Israel Mostly False.Harris has hired radical anti-Israel advisers, even if she has offered rhetorical support.

  6.  Fact Check: Kamala Distorts Unemployment Figures to Attack Trump - False. Unemployment was 6.4% in January 2021, not far from full employment, when Trump left office.

  7. Fact Check: Kamala Harris Falsely Claims Trump Wrote ‘Love Letters’ to Kim Jong-un - False - Harris obviously meant this insult as hyperbole, not a serious accusation that Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un were engaged in a long-distance same-sex romance.
