A Last-Minute Contestant for Politician of the Year

I was very confident that Senator Elizabeth Warren was going to be 2024’s Politician of the Year.

After all, not only is she a hypocrite on school choice and taxes, she’s also a hypocrite on the environment.

All of that is impressive, albeit in a bad way. Combine her hypocrisy with her statism (and her fraudulent career climb in academia) and she could be a poster child for oleaginous politicians. Not just for one year. For an entire century!

But I just saw a story about an elected official in Texas that makes me think the 2024 award is not a done deal.

Here are some jaw-dropping excerpts from a report by KTRK in Houston.

Serious questions are coming to light about Harris County Tax Collector Ann Harris Bennett’s job performance following a Houston Chronicle report showing the two-time elected official may not have shown up to work for years. Bennett’s office collects property taxes, processes vehicle registrations, and manages voter registration and records for Harris County’s more than 2.5 million registered voters.

However, public information requests from The Chronicle show she hasn’t swiped her badge to enter the office or any county facility since 2020. …Bennett has not been active online, sending a total of 18 emails since January. …Bennett earned a little over $171,000 in salary last year. …Experts and former holders of the office…criticize Bennett for not leading in public during times of turmoil and say voters should be concerned an elected official making a county salary may not be coming to work.

I imagine Ms. Bennett would claim she was “working from home,” but 18 emails in one year hardly sounds like she was active.

She reminds me of some of the foreigners (from Italy, India, and Spain) in the Bureaucrat Hall of Fame.

P.S. Here are past winners of my “Politician of the Year” award.

wretched hive of scum and villainy!
