Education in America Has Become a Snare and a Racket: Part IV

By Rich Kozlovich

If you believe universities are supposed to be admitting those who are best qualified academically, you're delusional, and to be fair, universities have done this for decades before the "Woke" demanded racial diversity, even if the candidates were entirely unqualified.  Just as now, in the past their goal was to keep some of the most academically qualified candidates out.  Jews!  There were just far too many of them out scoring all the other candidates, so it was clear, they needed a "Jewish quota".

Now we see "Asians" are getting the "Jewish Treatment"  at universities because there are just far "too many" of them.  Of course the reason they're there is because they're outscoring the other ethnic groups.  In short, they've worked hard and earned a spot in these institutions.  But, that's not acceptable.

On June 16, 2018 Ed Straker posted the article, How Harvard discriminates against Asians, saying:
I always knew that my alma mater, Harvard University, discriminates against Asians. But I was surprised to learn how the university does it. A lawsuit filed has shed some light on the matter. (By the way, although I am not a racist, I despise the word "Asians" – it can mean anything from Chinese to Pakistanis. Although I will play along and continue to use the word "Asians," we are mostly talking about Chinese heritage here, with a smattering of Korean heritage, Japanese heritage, Filipino heritage, and a few other groups of applicants.)
A lawsuit filed has shed some light on the matter. Harvard is being sued by a group claiming that Asians were discriminated against, that applicants of other ethnic groups were admitted with lower credentials. Surprise, surprise, they were right
He goes on to say:
Harvard consistently rated Asian-American applicants lower than others on traits like "positive personality," likability, courage, kindness and being "widely respected," according to an analysis of more than 160,000 student records filed Friday by a group representing Asian-American students in a lawsuit against the university.
Asian-Americans scored higher than applicants of any other racial or ethnic group on admissions measures like test scores, grades and extracurricular activities[.] ... But the students' personal ratings significantly dragged down their chances of being admitted, the analysis found. .. Harvard conducted an internal investigation into its admissions policies in 2013 and found a bias against Asian-American applicants.  But Harvard never made the findings public or acted on them.
Talk about creating a "standard" that's not only irrational, it's highly subjective, and to say the least, it's corrupt.

On July 10, 2019 Peter Skurkiss posted the article, What Would Colleges be Like If SATs Were the Sole Admission Criterion? saying:
Many bar and dorm room conversations probably have centered on what colleges would look like if SAT scores were the sole criteria for admission. People have had their suspicions and cite anecdotal observations but now Georgetown University has quantitatively answered the question as least as far as elite universities go.
Anyone with a passing awareness of today's college admission policies knows that the student makeup would change if academics were the sole criteria. How much they would change is the question. As to whether using just SAT scores -- i.e. academic performance -- is good or bad is another matter.
There are a number of reasons why higher academically performing students lose seats to others. There are legacy admissions and sport scholarships. Both these skew the college population downward on the academic scale especially when it comes to big money-making sports like football and basketball. However, the greatest factor is a commitment to racial diversity. College administrators will literally go to any length the prove they are 'woke.'...........Ben Shapiro writes that racial diversity is a driving force in college admissions. He cites a Wall Street Journal article that says UCLA is committed "closing the gap between the haves and the have-nots by admitting have-no-qualification minorities over meritorious students."
And UCLA is far from alone..............I hope that the Supreme Court will eventually have a majority of justices who realize that diversity is not in the Constitution, but equal treatment under the law most certainly is
There should be only one standard for admission into any institution of higher education and that should be how well they score on admissions exams.

However, what I'm going to say now is probably going to surprise many of my readers, but quite frankly, I don't care what these universities do.  If they want to discriminate in favor of one group over another they should be allowed to do so.  If they want to give positions to unqualified candidates, or academically unqualified athletes, or unqualified legacies, or a certain race or ethnic group, or only those who are "Woke" and politically correct, etc, that's acceptable to me.  Provided they stop getting government handouts.

And that is the answer in my opinion. Let them do and teach what they please, and let them be accountable to the paying public.  Let the public know and see what they're up to, and let the paying public decide for themselves whether they like it or not.  Then the paying public can choose to spend their money as they please.

No public funding for higher education, no student loans, no federal requirements on how they spend their money on sports, and in point of fact - end all federal involvement in higher education and eliminate the Department of Education.

And just as importantly, in public education.  That's not the job of the federal government, that's the job of local government, and that should be limited to the local boards of education.

Higher education is a snare and a racket.
