Election 2028: How many Declared Candidates Are There For President of the United States?

 By Rich Kozlovich

During the run up to the 2024 election I ran a number of articles on that election.  Actually a lot of articles.  Taken together they would have amounted to an 170 page Word document. In one of them I stated:

As the 2024 Election is only eight months away we're seeing more hyperbolic lies, obfuscation, misdirection, and quite frankly, irrational and blatantly insane rhetoric supporting insane positions than I've seen in my almost 78 years.  What really surprises me is how many seemingly normal people are confused about who they think will be the best candidate for President or even Congress.

Well, I'm 80 now, and the "hyperbolic lies, obfuscation, misdirection, and quite frankly, irrational and blatantly insane rhetoric supporting insane positions" spouted then was mild compared to the insanity we're seeing unfold today.

One series of articles dealt with all the candidates for President: Runners, Joggers, and Vocal Spectators: Election 2024, Part 1, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, and Part VII with my take on the 2024 Presidential run.  Also one with my analysis of the Senate races.  Given the fact that prediction.... especially about the future.... is really hard, I didn't do too badly. For some reason this one was been hit a lot yesterday, Runners, Joggers, and Vocal Spectators: Election 2024, Part VII.  Obviously this essay was number seven in a series, and as stated in that article it dealt with:

"Third party/Independent/Moderate Party candidates, and just plain odd characters, including some Republicans."

Well, that got me to thinking: How many candidates are already registered to run for President in 2028?  Well, it's just a mere 337, imagine that, and we've not even had the 2026 midterm election yet.  For a bit of comparison, as of August 2015 here are how many registered candidates were running for President in 2016. At that point there were only 88.   Now, that's a really big difference.... and some big names were on that list... and don't ask me why there's such a big difference in numbers since I have no idea and I didn't create this list,  Also....don't ask me to explain what it means to be "registered" because I have no idea what that entails.

At any rate, I broke down this list for 2028 to make it comprehensible.

Ace Party 1
American Independent Conservative Party 1
American Independent Party 7
Citizens' Party 2
Constitution Party 1
Democratic Party 74
Federalist Party 1
Green party  2
Independence Party 3
Independent Party 140
Independent American Party 1
Libertarian Party 6
No Party Affiliation 2
No Party Preference 1
One Earth Party 1
People Over Politics Party 2
Progressive Party  1
Republican Party  78
The Human Rights Party 1
Unaffiliated  10
United Party 1
Veteran's Party 1

337

This is a list of "registered" candidates with no chance of getting in on debates, nominated, and most certainly not getting elected.

Here is a list of the big name Democrats being touted, none of which have registered as far as I can tell, and truthfully, it seems to me with the possible exception of three of four, none of them will be nominated.

  • Andy Beshear, governor of Kentucky[1]
  • Cory Booker, U.S. senator from New Jersey[2]
  • Pete Buttigieg, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation[3]
  • Roy Cooper, former governor of North Carolina[1]

  • Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. senator from New York[9]
  • Josh Green, governor of Hawaii[10]
  • Michelle Lujan Grisham, governor of New Mexico[11]
  • Kamala Harris, former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee[3]
  • Maura Healey, governor of Massachusetts[12]
  • Mark Kelly, U.S. senator from Arizona[9]
  • Ro Khanna, U.S. representative from California[2]
  • Amy Klobuchar, U.S. senator from Minnesota[13]
  • Wes Moore, governor of Maryland[3][14]
  • Chris Murphy, U.S. senator from Connecticut[15]
  • Phil Murphy, former governor of New Jersey[2]

  • Elissa Slotkin, U.S. senator from Michigan[9]
  • Josh Stein, governor of North Carolina[19]
  • Ritchie Torres, U.S. representative from New York[15]
  • Chris Van Hollen, U.S. senator from Maryland[20]
  • Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota and 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee[19]
  • Raphael Warnock, U.S. senator from Georgia[1]
  • Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan[3]
  • Here's the list of the big name Republicans being touted none of which is registered as far as I can tell, and with the exception of Vance or Rubio, none of them will be nominated, including Ted Cruz or Ron DeSantis.  But compared to the Democrat list... this is an impressive crowd.

  • Greg Abbott, governor of Texas[1]
  • Katie Britt, U.S. senator from Alabama[1]
  • Doug Burgum, secretary of the interior[24]
  • Tom Cotton, U.S. senator from Arkansas[25]
  • Spencer Cox, governor of Utah[26]
  • Ted Cruz, U.S. senator from Texas[27]
  • Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida[25]
  • Byron Donalds, U.S. representative from Florida[1]
  • Tulsi Gabbard, director of national intelligence[17]
  • Matt Gaetz, former U.S. representative from Florida[1]
  • Marjorie Taylor Greene, former U.S. representative from Georgia[28]
  • Nikki Haley, former ambassador to the United Nations[25]
  • Josh Hawley, U.S. senator from Missouri[1]
  • Brian Kemp, governor of Georgia[25]
  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr., secretary of health and human services[26]
  • Kristi Noem, secretary of homeland security[27]
  • Rand Paul, U.S. senator from Kentucky[29]
  • Mike Pence, former vice president[26]
  • Mike Pompeo, former secretary of state[30]
  • Vivek Ramaswamy, 2026 Ohio gubernatorial candidate and 2024 presidential candidate[25]
  • Marco Rubio, secretary of state[25]
  • Sarah Huckabee Sanders, governor of Arkansas[25]
  • Tim Scott, U.S. senator from South Carolina[27]
  • Elise Stefanik, U.S. representative from New York[1]
  • J.D. Vance, vice president[25]
  • Glenn Youngkin, former governor of Virginia[25]
  • Since none of the big names are on the "registered" list,  you know that list will change dramatically by this time next year, and most certainly by this time in 2028, but I thought it was worth taking a look at anyway.
