Was it really 45 years ago?

August 9, 2019 By Silvio Canto, Jr.

I was forty-five years ago whis week when the unthinkable happened: President Richard M. Nixon announced that he had resigned the presidency. He made his announcement on TV the night before and formally resigned at noon on this day in 1974.

As I recall, I rushed home to watch President Nixon's departure from the White House and President Gerald Ford's inauguration. I kept telling myself that I was a witness to history -- a new president who was not part of the 1972 election day ticket.

Later my dad came home with a business friend visiting from Venezuela. We sat down for dinner and the friend commented that it was impressive to watch a transfer of power without tanks or shots.

After the speech and his departure from Washington, President Nixon went into political exile but made a comeback in the 1980s with some great books, one of them his memoirs, RN. He became one of the premier foreign-policy statesmen in the world. .........To Read More....

My Take - It's clear now there really wasn't enough real evidence to impeach him, but public opinion fueled by the press made it impossible for him to win such a battle.  See Troubling Watergate Revelations, Too Late to Matter.

Having said that, it's clear to me the Democrats saved the nation from Nixon.  Remember he's the guy that crated the EPA, OSHA, the Endangered Species Act and passed all sorts of green legislation that has become a plague on the nation today.  I hate to think how much worse it would have been if he hadn't been preoccupied with the Congressional investigation, Judge Sirica, and his impeachment, and lasted the rest of his term.  He was one of the worst leftist Presidents the nation had to contend with, but he laid the groundwork for Reagan, and he can't take credit for that.

One more thing.  I keep hearing how he was such a great foreign policy wonk, and mostly it was because he went to China.  Let's stop being stupid already.  That action led to the problems we have with China today.  We gave them an economy, opened our markets to them, let them steal technology and even sold advanced technology that created a challenge to our secutiry, and worse yet, Nixon saved Mao from his own machinations.  Nixon was a globalist, just like Henry Kissinger, and if Nixon were alive today, he would have sold us down the river to the UN and all the other leftists confams just as he did with China.

It's also my opinion he really wasn't a big communist hater so much as he was a big Nixon lover.  For him, the McCarthy hearings were merely a tool to promote Nixon, and if the public feeling was pro-communist, so too would have been Nixon.  Let's stop praising Nixon for his foreign policy expertise.....please!  He was a disaster in everything he touched.
