The Twitter Files Reveal an Existential Threat

The following is adapted from a talk delivered at Hillsdale College on February 7, 2023.

Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter last October and the subsequent reporting on the Twitter Files by journalists Matt Taibbi, Bari Weiss, and a handful of others beginning in early December is one of the most important news stories of our time. The Twitter Files story encompasses, and to a large extent connects, every major political scandal of the Trump-Biden era. Put simply, the Twitter Files reveal an unholy alliance between Big Tech and the deep state designed to throttle free speech and maintain an official narrative through censorship and propaganda. This should not just disturb us, it should also prod us to action in defense of the First Amendment, free and fair elections, and indeed our country.

After Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter, he fired a slew of useless or insubordinate employees, instituted new content moderation policies, and tried to reform a woke corporate culture that bordered (and still borders) on parody. In the process, Musk coordinated with Taibbi and Weiss on the publication of a series of stories based on internal Twitter documents related to an array of major political events going back years: the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, Twitter’s secret policy of shadow banning, President Trump’s suspension from Twitter after the January 6 U.S. Capitol riot, the co-opting of Twitter by the FBI to suppress “election disinformation” ahead of the 2020 election, Twitter’s involvement in a Pentagon overseas psy-op campaign, its silencing of dissent from the official Covid narrative, its complicity in the Russiagate hoax, and its gradual capitulation to the direct involvement of the U.S. intelligence community—with the FBI as a go-between—in content moderation.

As Taibbi has written, the Twitter Files “show the FBI acting as doorman to a vast program of social media surveillance and censorship, encompassing agencies across the federal government—from the State Department to the Pentagon to the CIA.”

The Twitter Files contain multitudes, but for the sake of brevity let us consider just three installments and their related implications: the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story, the suspension of Trump, and the deputization of Twitter by the FBI. Together, these stories reveal not just a social media company willing to do the bidding of an out-of-control federal bureaucracy, but a federal bureaucracy openly hostile to the First Amendment.

The late great political scientist Angelo Codevilla argued that our response to 9/11 was completely wrong. Instead of erecting a sprawling security and surveillance apparatus to detect and disrupt potential terrorist plots, we should have issued an ultimatum to the regimes that were harboring Al Qaeda: you make war on these terrorists and bring them to justice or we will make war on you. The reason not to do what we did, Codevilla argued, is that a security and surveillance apparatus powerful and pervasive enough to do what we wanted it to do was incompatible with a free society. It might defeat the terrorists, but it would eventually be turned on the American people.

The Twitter Files leave little doubt that Codevilla’s prediction has come to pass. The question we face now is whether the American people and their elected representatives will fight back. The fate of the republic rests on the answer........To Read More....

Editor's Note: I've been saving a lot of articles dealing with this to use in articles of my own.  Truth be told, this whole thing became overwhelming with more and more information coming out daily, I gave up, but kept saving articles.  I eliminated a bunch of them but here the ones I thought pertinent, and I've tried to organize them in some semblance of order.  

One thing should be clear when you peruse all these pieces dealing with this Twitter scandal; America has been existentially threatened by the leftist dogma and actions in academia, industry, all the social media, the media, entertainment, the Deep State and the Democrat party.  

America, we have a problem, and no matter what clabber the leftist cabal may spew out, these House committee investigations are about crimes, serious crimes.  Not about politics.  Crime, corruption and treason.  RK

House Committee Hearings, Part I

As all this plays out, and that will include other House investigations, which I'm looking forward to those that will be headed by Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, which I think starts today, and who is on the Oversight Committee also, I think we need to thank the Democrat members on these committees.  On this House Oversight committee I want to especially want to thank Raskin, and AOC, as they're clearly going to be gifts that keep on giving.  AOC claims the Hunter laptop story is half fake. Okay AOC, tell us which half is fake, and which half isn't? 

There are going to be four things the Democrat members are going to make clear to the most casual observer.  

1. One, they will spew out logical fallacies.  
2. Two, they will obfuscate the truth in an effort to make all these investigations appear to be about politics, not crimes.  
3. Three, they will project, meaning they will accuse conservatives of doing the things they themselves have done or are doing.  
4. Four, they will lie  

I intend to follow all this as it occurs as a continuing saga, so here's Part I, which isn't being followed by the media nearly as much as I thought it would, except for some "alternative" media sites. 

One more thing.  While I have no doubt they've committed crimes, they would have to be arrested and charged with the crimes they committed by the DOJ, and under Biden, and given the corrupt state of the Justice Department under Merritt Garland, that's not going to happen.

House Oversight Committee hearing - The hearing was titled “Protecting Speech from Government Interference and Social Media Bias Part 1: Twitter’s Role in Suppressing the Biden Laptop Story.” In his opening statement, Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) talked about Twitter’s actions and the unethical and illegal things that had been occurring and how they were controlling what was available to the public. Former Twitter executives were called to testify at the hearing. Yoel Roth former head of trust and safety at Twitter, former Deputy Counsel James Barker were all present, former Chief Legal Officer Vijaya Gadde, and Anika Collier Navaroli former Twitter executive turned whistleblower former Deputy Counsel James Barker were all present.

 Weaponization Under Fire - Tomorrow the House of Representatives’ Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government will hold its first hearing, chaired by Jim Jordan. The existence of this committee illustrates the vital difference between a narrow minority and a narrow majority. The Media Undertakers Must be Getting Exhausted

There a young (but well-connected to leftist politicos and media) tech slob Sam Bankman-Fried “lost” eight billion dollars, shelled out at least $40 million to Democrats, is suspected of laundering a lot of taxpayer money through Ukraine, and cloaked his outrageously criminal conduct in the garb of promoting social justice once he realized he could no longer disguise his Ponzi scheme.

 Of course, if Twitter had merely determined on its own not to allow certain views, there would be no justiciable claim of a constitutional violation. The initial release of Twitter’s files on speech suppression left many wondering what other wrongs the social media platform may have committed, including famed Covington kid Nicholas Sandmann who suggested potential complicity in endangering his life.

Biden campaign and Democrat party colluded with Twitter to swing the 2020 election

Elon Musk, Twitter’s new owner and CEO, just dropped a bombshell that has no known parallel in American history: The Biden administration and the Democratic National Committee colluded with Twitter to swing the 2020 election to Joe Biden and his Democrats.

And whatever other spin you hear about these revelations, the title of this article is now an absolutely indisputable fact that even the most dishonest of people would have difficulty arguing against.  As such, the goal for progressive spin doctors now is not to dispute the fact that the Biden campaign and the Democrat party colluded with Twitter to interfere with the 2020 presidential election.  Their task is now to hide that fact from the public to the extent possible by dismissing it as inconsequential, and to convince the public that the collusion that did take place is not a serious violation of the public trust.........

But what is really interesting is the tactic left-wing journos on Twitter are taking to deflect the implications of the story. The Armageddon of Free Speech

Just a few days ago, as many will remember, Elon Musk trolled CNN by posting on Twitter a meme with a fake headline attributed to the the cable news network..........In addition to being funny, the episode was also in some ways incredibly meaningful and emblematic.  In other words, the "fake headline" was not so fake...........According to the critics of Elon Musk, the "rhetoric of free speech absolutists" fails to understand that "for some speech to be free, other speech has to be limited."......... Now it has become, "We (liberals, progressives, etc) say so."  It's true because we say it's true, and if you don't agree with us, you are a fascist/racist/homophobe, etc., and we don't want your kind here.........

Elon Musk's $44-billion takeover of Twitter is being investigated by federal authorities over national security concerns......... E.U. commissioner responsible for implementing the upcoming Digital Services Act (DSA), Thierry Breton, recently said that Twitter has "huge work ahead" to get ready for the bloc's strict new rules for online platforms........ French digital minister Jean-Noël Barrot didn't appreciate Twitter's change of policy on COVID-related information.  "COVID-19 and vaccination misinformation [are] now freely available on Twitter.  Another milestone is reached in irresponsibility," he tweeted.  In turn, in an interview with U.S. broadcaster ABC, French president Emmanuel Macron called Twitter's decision "a big issue."  "I think we need to take the issue head-on, I'm in favor of the exact opposite, more regulation," he added.

Kyle Rittenhouse Requests That Elon Musk Uncover the Discussion of Twitter Censoring Him During His Trial

After it was reported that Kyle Rittenhouse shot 3 people, two of whom died, in Kenosha, WI during the 2020 BLM/Antifa riots, social media companies moved quickly. Facebook and Twitter made it clear that Rittenhouse was not allowed to be “praised” on their platforms.  Arguably, that stance may have made it harder for Rittenhouse’s defense, although he did ultimately receive an acquittal from a jury of his peers. Rittenhouse was (mostly) allowed to be talked about favorably and allowed to use Facebook and Twitter after he received the good news.

Many social media users still falsely call him a murderer despite the acquittal. Rittenhouse has asked Elon Musk amid the release of information about how the old Twitter censored conservatives, to unearth some information about him too.  He would probably like to know how social media companies treated him like he was guilty (in our opinion and that of many) before a jury decided that he acted in self defense based on a highly scrutinized trial and lots of video and evidence reviewed..........To Read More.....l

A few thoughts on last night's Twitter expose' debacle

Given that Friday is my day off, the last thing I wanted to be doing last night was perching like a vulture on Twitter and waiting for Elon Musk to drop his promised expose’ on how Twitter’s former management blocked the New York Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story in the weeks before the 2020 elections. But like an addict trying to drive past the crack dealers on the corner, I just couldn’t help myself. In case you somehow missed it, John provided some very thorough coverage last night where you can read what was released in a much less frustrating format than a series of tweets spread out over several hours. So was this the “bombshell” that everyone was waiting for? We’ll get to that in a moment. Elon Musk release: 'Biden team' had direct line to Twitter to censor Hunter laptop story

Social media giant complied with demands to remove information campaign didn't like.   As promised, Elon Musk released information about Twitter's suppression of the New York Post's blockbuster stories before the 2020 election presenting evidence from a laptop abandoned by Hunter Biden that the Democratic Party's presidential candidate was covering up his family's sale of access to the White House to the likes of Chinese Communist Party companies, and Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs.  Musk began releasing the information Friday evening tweet by tweet through independent journalist Matt Taibbi.    So far, it shows the Biden White House had a direct line to Twitter to remove information it didn’t like. Taibbi posted a screen shot of a message between Twitter employees showing that by 2020, requests from connected actors to delete tweets were routine. Morris: Internal Twitter Deliberations on Laptop from Hell Censorship Reveal Willful Ignorance on ‘Hacking’ Claim

Dec 2022 Internal Twitter deliberations surrounding the censorship of the New York Post‘s reporting on Hunter Biden’s “laptop from hell” reveal the company’s management engaging in willful ignorance of the facts of the story in order to justify censoring it on the platform.

Matt Taibbi, the journalist tasked by Elon Musk to reveal the internal communications, explains that Twitter management at the time used the company’s hacked materials policy “as an excuse” to squelch the Post’s reporting, but knew it “wasn’t going to hold.” The reason it “wasn’t going to hold” was because the Post explained that the reporting was based on a hard drive abandoned at a computer repair shop, not “hacked material,” and produced a federal subpoena given to the repair-shop owner to bolster the claim.

Former Trust and Safety chief Yoel Roth messaged colleague Vijaya Gadde, “The policy basis is hacked materials — though, as discussed, this is an emerging situation where the facts remain unclear. Given the SEVERE risks here and lessons of 2016, we’re erring on the side of including a warning and preventing this content from being amplified.”

Another member of management, Brandon Borrman, then asks, “Can we truthfully claim that this is part of the policy?”  Jim Baker, Twitter’s then-Deputy Legal Counsel and former senior member of the FBI, adds, “[We] need more facts to assess whether the materials were hacked. At this stage, however, it is reasonable for us to assume that they may have been and that conclusion is warranted.”Baker then admits, per the Post‘s reporting in the story in question, that there is evidence “indicating that the computer was either abandoned and/or the owner consented to allow the repair shop to access it for at least some purposes.”But during the time this communication was underway, Twitter did not contact the New York Post to inquire about whether the reporting was based on hacked material, and the story in question explained exactly how the Post obtained the material it was reporting on...............To Read More.....

Twitter Files Reveal DNC Requested Censorship of James Woods

Internal Twitter emails released on Friday by Elon Musk via journalist Matt Taibbi revealed that Twitter censored a tweet about the Hunter Biden laptop story by actor James Wood at the behest of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

The communications revealed that a political party was able to successfully suppress a private citizens’ speech on Twitter for posting content that could be politically damaging for the Democrat presidential nominee at the time of a presidential election.

The email posted by Taibbi showed that a Twitter employee emailed a co-worker with suspension requests, writing: “An additional report from DNC.” Listed were two tweets, including one by Woods.Woods tweeted on October 24, 2020, a meme of Hunter Biden after the Hunter Biden laptop story broke that showed a photo of Hunter apparently taking drugs and engaging in a sexual act............Twitter suspended the New York Post‘s Twitter account and suppressed tweets linking to the story — some apparently at the behest of the DNC.............To Read More.....

Dems Have Completely Flipped Their Position on Twitter Now that Musk Owns It

On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” actor James Woods said that back before Elon Musk’s takeover, “when they had the power on Twitter, the Democrats were happy to say, well, it’s a private site.” But have now flipped their views on the nature of the site under Musk’s ownership.  Woods stated, “Back when they had the power on Twitter, the Democrats were happy to say, well, it’s a private site. It’s not like it’s a town square, they can say whatever they want. But they’re not saying it now that Elon Musk owns it. But it was, in fact, the town square. It was, in fact, a forum for free speech. And if you have a town square where only some people are allowed to use it, then you don’t really have a free country. We know in this country what it was like when certain citizens weren’t allowed to speak, when they had to step off the sidewalk because a person with different skin color was walking down the street.
