Amid international moves to punish Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, Canada has joined Britain in calling for Russia’s suspension from INTERPOL, the international policy agency whose fugitive-location tools the Kremlin has long been accused of abusing for political ends.
“Today, Canada and other close partners are calling to suspend Russia from INTERPOL,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa on Thursday.
“We’re supporting this because we believe that international law-enforcement cooperation depends on a collective commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and mutual respect between INTERPOL members.”
Trudeau did not identify the “close partners” supporting the call, but British Home Secretary Priti Patel told the House of Commons early this week that Britain was pushing for the same outcome.
“The government of Ukraine has requested that the Russian government
be suspended from INTERPOL, a position that the U.K. wholeheartedly
endorses, and we are rallying other international partners to also call
