The Democratic Majority Is Doomed

By PETE DU PONT February 28, 2013, 1:37 p.m. ET

The entitlement mentality can't survive a weak economy.   Many argue the coalition that elected and re-elected Barack Obama represents a long-term shift in the electorate that will determine elections and public policies for generations. Some of commentators think conservatives have lost their relevance, and the Republicans are about to go the way of the Whigs.

It's an interesting theory, but of course it's wrong. Politics, like much in life, tends to move like a pendulum, shifting back and forth around equilibrium. While the liberal Democratic coalition is ascendant now, a few decades ago people were speaking about the decline of the Democrats. More recently, leftists took to calling themselves "progressives" to avoid what was seen as the pejorative term "liberal." And just over two years ago, the Democrats took a drubbing in the midterm elections. Today, with the real-time flow of unfiltered information via blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc., and more Americans self-identifying as independents and able to shift their support rapidly to either party, lasting coalitions will be difficult to maintain….To Read More…..

Hundreds of thousands march against austerity in Portugal

02 March 2013

People take part in a demonstration in downtown Lisbon on March 2, 2013.  Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Lisbon and other Portuguese cities Saturday to protest against the government's austerity measures aimed at rescuing the debt-hit eurozone nation.  The rallies were organised by a non-political movement which claimed 500,000 marched in the country's capital and another 400,000 in the main northern city of Porto. There have been no official estimates of the crowds.  But the mood of the crowd was clearly political, calling for new elections with banners declaring "Portugal to the polls!" and "If you fall asleep in a democracy, you wake up in a dictatorship"......To Read More…..

My Take - Okay - so what is it everyone actually wants?  More.....!  Great, but who's going to pay for it?  Apparently the rich!  What happens when they are out of money?  We have seen this in France, Greece and Italy....and others that I can't think of right now, but it is a clear indication that Europe is finished.  Pull out your money, pull out the support organizations, pull out the troops and wait for them to implode, since that is all that is left and there is no value of imploding with them.
Worried about them being taken over by Islam?  Forget it.  We are going to see violence in Europe that will border on the likes of the Middle Ages.  It's enough to make you sick.  The countries that were very foundation for western culture are on the verge of collapsing and there is no fixing it.   By embracing secularism and the socialist mentality of the French Revolution they abandoned the foundation for western culture, Christianity.  As a result there is no moral and intellectual foundation their societies can hold on to.  When that happens there can only be one binding force; economic stability!  They’re doomed!  And America is attempting to become one with them.  We’ve lost our minds.

Obscene Government Waste

 By Alan Caruba

This first appeared here.  I wish to thank Alan for allowing me to publish his work.  RK

The one thing the “sequester” did was to get people asking why government spending could not be reduced. Adding to the drama of the automatic cuts was the sky-is-falling, government-services-will-stop, and comparable lies the President and his cabinet secretaries told until it became obvious that the public was not buying it.

What the President did not talk about was the incredible, obscene waste of taxpayer’s money that goes on every day in every department and agency of the U.S. government. Americans are so accustomed to hearing everything described in the billions and trillions, they have lost sight of what these numbers really mean and this is particularly true in light of the nation’s huge, growing debt and deficit.

It’s not like independent organizations like Citizens Against Government Waste don’t keep watch and report the waste. It has gained some fame for its annual “Pig Book”, a list of absurd spending. To its credit, the Government Accountability Office occasionally issues a report on waste when some member of Congress requests it.

Even a casual bit of research turns up item after item that, were Americans not so apathetic and indifferent to government waste, it would result in huge rallies in Washington, D.C. calling for change. There is none.

Here are some examples, a mere handful from the many anyone can discover by simply Googling “government waste.”

# The government spends $1.7 billion for maintenance on empty buildings it owns, although some sources put the figure at closer to $25 billion. The Office of Management and Budget estimates that 55,000 properties are underutilized or entirely vacant.

# The federal government owns approximately one-third of all U.S. land. It does not need more land and it could be argued that it should not own 80% of Nevada and Alaska, and more than half of Idaho. That said, it wants to spend $2.3 billion to purchase more land and the National park Service currently has a backlog of maintenance tasks totaling $5 billion. These include parks that the Obama administration was saying would all have to be closed down because of a sequester reduction of a mere 1.2% of all federal spending.

# Homeland Security’s Janet Napolitano was issuing statements about the sequestration cuts to her department, but according to Tom Schatz, president of Citizens Against Government Waste, the department has $9 billion in unspent preparedness funds. How much of that will be spent on purchasing more DHS ammunition? They have already purchased enough to shoot every American five times.

# Republican lawmakers in Congress took the sequester fear-mongering as an opportunity to note, as Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) said, “There are pots of money sitting in different departments across the federal government, that have been authorized over either a number of months or years.”

# Rep. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is a leading budget hawk who identified programs to fund a space ship to another solar system, funds for advancements in beef jerky from France, and $6 billion for research to find out what lessons about democracy and decision-making can be learned—from fish!

# While you’re trying to figure out how to pay your 2012 taxes, give a thought to the National Science Foundation $350,000 grant to Perdue University researchers on how to improve your golf game.

# Not to be outspent, the National Institutes of Health gave a $940,000 grant to researchers who found that the production of pheromones in—wait for it—fruit flies, declines over time. Turns out that male fruit flies were more attracted to younger female fruit flies. The NIH also paid researchers to find out why gay men in Argentina engage in risky sexual behavior when they’re drunk and spent $800,000 in “stimulus funds” to study the impact of a “genital-washing” program on men in South Africa. You can’t make up this stuff.

# For reasons that defy sanity, various elements of the government have spent $3 million for research on video games; $2.6 million to train Chinese prostitutes to drink responsibly; a whopping $500 million on a program that would, among other things, try to figure out why five-year-olds “can’t sit still” in a kindergarten classroom; and grants such as $1.8 million on a “museum of neon signs” in Las Vegas, Nevada.

# Sanity does not apply to the $2 billion given annually to U.S. farmers to not farm their land. Don’t even ask about the Defense Department. It has long been famous for waste.

While all this has been going on, in 2010 the Office of Management and Budget determined that $47.9 billion was spent on fraudulent or improper payments in Medicare and the problem still hasn’t been fixed, though the cost is now up to $62 billion. There’s been $2.7 billion in fraud and mismanagement of the food-stamp program. And on, and on, and on.

And the President of the United States can only talk about tax breaks for the “rich and well-connected” while spending most of his time hanging out with the “rich and well-connected.” The rest of the time is spent campaigning to get higher taxes on all the rest of us.

If you just added up the billions cited in this brief look at waste, the federal government might actually be able to get by without having run up the national debt to more than $16 trillion and running trillion-plus annual deficits.

Dear readers,

The top ten countries to log on to Paradigms and Demographics for February were -United States,  Germany,  France,  Russia,  Bulgaria,  United Kingdom,  Canada,  Ukraine,  Ireland and Spain.  Romania made the top ten for this week, and today China made the top ten.   As for the "all time" top ten countries, it falls this way - United States,  Germany,  Russia, France, United Kingdom , Canada,  Bulgaria,  Ukraine,  Australia and the Netherlands.

I have no absolute explanation for why what countries become interested, but one thing I can be sure of; much of it has to do with alternative energy.  For a long time Japan was in the top ten quite a few weeks, and I am convinced it involved solar energy posts.  Bulgarians became regular readers after I linked a large number of articles dealing with fracking.  Germans have been consistent readers, but I believe that alternative energy is a major concern for them also.   The number one and number two posts that are hit are The Sun is Undergoing a State Change and  Observations From the Back Row: 9-1-11.  One dealing with global warming and the other energy production, which is part and parcel of the same package.

As for France, Russia and the others, I'm not sure what was the driving interest; except to say that these readers started hitting this blog after I started posting articles, along with my comments dealing with issues involving Islam, the economics and politics of China, the E.U, etc.  My U.S., Canadian and U.K. readers were high in the numbers when this was an anti-green only blog.  The U.S. numbers keep growing per ratio as I changed from a ‘green only’ blog to a ‘pro-humanity’ blog, which by definition means being anti-green and anti-left.   So I have to believe I have picked up readers who have more than green issues in view.  Canada and the U.K. and Australia are back and forth now, so I’m not sure what is moving that audience, but I publish what interests me, and those issues I think needs “My Take”.

My friend Dr. Jay Lehr, who is science director with the Heartland Institute wrote to me recently regarding my article, If It Turns Green It Isn’t Gold  saying  “you are an incisive writer who is able to put the pieces together for anyone to fully understand without having their eyes glaze over.  Congratulations, I will be printing that piece out for my file and quote it at many of my lectures.”  Needless to say, I'm flattered.  I know there are at least two science writers who are regular readers, one of which I think is in opposition to my views.

Paradigms and Demographics isn't about winning arguments.  It is about finding the facts and following them no matter where they lead.  Far too many writers, especially blogsters, are all ego and ideology.  I have two criteria for determining what is right.  Everything we are told has an historical foundation and everything we are told should bear some resemblance to what we see going on in reality.  If what we're being told fails in either of these categories then it is wrong.  Then we merely have to find out why.

No matter the reason I wish to thank you all for your interest.

Best wishes,
Rich Kozlovich

RFK Jr: JFK Probe 'Shoddy,' Doesn't Believe Lone Gunman Theory

Thursday, 24 Jan 2013 10:36 PM

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is convinced that a lone gunman wasn't solely responsible for the assassination of his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, and said his father believed the Warren Commission report was a "shoddy piece of craftsmanship."  Kennedy and his sister, Rory, spoke about their family Friday night while being interviewed in front of an audience by Charlie Rose at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas. The event comes as a year of observances begins for the 50th anniversary of the president's death……He said his father thought the Warren Commission, which concluded Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in killing the president, was a "shoddy piece of craftsmanship." He said that he, too, questioned the report.  "The evidence at this point I think is very, very convincing that it was not a lone gunman," he said, but he didn't say what he believed may have happened…….He said his father had investigators do research into the assassination and found that phone records of Oswald and nightclub owner Jack Ruby, who killed Oswald two days after the president's assassination, "were like an inventory" of mafia leaders the government had been investigating.  He said his father, later elected U.S. senator in New York, was "fairly convinced" that others were involved....To Read More....

I have Been Warning About the "California" Migration: Apparently it Wasn’t Necessary!

By Rich Kozlovich

For some time I have linked articles about Californian’s penchant for slicing their own wrists economically, socially and culturally by passing incredibly stupid laws, raising taxes to an unsustainably unconscionable level and then piling up massive unsustainable spending, that couldn’t be met even at the time the agreements for these expenditures where passed.   And seemingly they are surprised at two things.  California is going down the drain and those who refuse to go down the drain with California –the sane and normal- are leaving and taking their businesses, their taxes, their families and the jobs they created with them.

Unfortunately along with the sane and normal who are leaving, the insane and liberal who caused all of this are leaving also; and they want the world they are moving into to be just like the world they left.  Remember, I did say that they were insane and liberal….same thing.

Years ago I linked an article about a former citizen of an exclusive county in Californian who was leaving because he couldn’t afford the real-estate taxes any longer.  Now, you have to understand the reason this county was so exclusive.  They wanted to be exclusive and did so by controlling the building codes and raising real estate taxes.  All things they voted in on themselves.  Even though he was in favor of all of these laws, which he voted for, he could no longer afford them.  When asked if he regretted supporting such laws he said he still supported them.  And then he left.  My thought at the time was; I hope he moved somewhere else in California and didn’t attempt to infect normal people in other states with this west coast insanity.  Clearly it is infectious, how else can you explain the incredibly stupid things they do.

As I have said in the past, Patrice Lewis is one of my favorite writers.  She posted an aricle called, “Californicating our nation”.She starts out saying;

“If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one. If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk-show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.… and so on and so forth.

To this excellent list, I would like to make an addition: If a conservative doesn’t like where he lives, he moves. If a liberal doesn’t like where he lives, he moves and then tries to endow his new setting with the same problems as his old location.”

She goes on to say;   “California” is now not just a geographic location but an attitude”, and then cites an article called, ‘By All Means, Leave’: The Amazingly Blunt Response One State Rep. Gave a Citizen Who Wrote Him Opposing Concealed Carry in Schools

Remember, “anyone can be a “Californian.”   In this case there was this ding-a-ling,  Audette Fulbright, who thinks that the people of Wyoming –all hicks and dummies – should be thrilled that educated, childrearing-age adults from Virginia deigned to move into the midst of such a backward ignorant society that was clearly in desperate need of enlightenment!

She wrote to State Rep. Hans Hunt saying “My husband and I moved to Wyoming not too long ago. We believed it was a good place to raise children. With the recent and reactive expansion of gun laws and the profoundly serious dangers of fracking, we find we are seriously reconsidering our decision, which is wrenching to all of us. However, the safety of our family must come first. We are waiting to see what the legislature does this session. I know of other new-to-Wyoming families in similar contemplation. Your choices matter. It would be sad to see an exodus of educated, childrearing-age adults from Wyoming as a result of poor lawmaking.”

Naturally, being of a liberal state of mind and used to sissies…oops….did I say that…..I mean “enlightened” legislators, she apparently expected to have this guy roll over and beg for her to forgive them, since up until now they hadn’t the good fortune of being blessed with liberal enlightenment.

Remember that I started out worrying that these morally and mentally defective people were going to take the country by surprise and infect the rest of the nation with their insanity.  I was so wrong.  It appears they have been waiting for them.  Rep. Hunt, who looks about eighteen by the way, responded, “I’ll be blunt. If you don’t like the political atmosphere of Wyoming, then by all means, leave. We, who have been here a very long time (I am proudly fourth generation) are quite proud of our independent heritage. I don’t expect a ‘mass exodus’ from our state just because we’re standing up for our rights. … It offends me to no end when liberal out-of-staters such as yourself move into Wyoming, trying to get away from where they came from, and then pompously demand that Wyoming conform to their way of thinking.”  This man is destined for bigger things.

Patrice went on to say in her article; “Presumably these out-of-staters don’t recognize their tactics as being destructive. They’re only trying to do good, you see. They just want to tutor the poor ignorant locals to get in touch with their feeeeeelings rather than bitterly clinging to their guns and Bibles. They’re just here to help.”

She continues; “These “Californians” have an enormous disconnect between cause and effect. They don’t recognize that the effect of gun confiscation is skyrocketing crime, or that shutting down economic opportunities means unemployment. They never seem to “get” that the progressive policies they endorse cause the crime, pollution, out-of-control spending, regulations and taxes that chased them out of “California” to begin with.”   Of course the answer to this disconnect between reality and their leftist utopianism is simple; they’re insane.  No other explanation fits.

Do You Have a Healthcare Plan B?

Written by Will Block - Friday, 01 March 2013

It is imperative that you tend to your Plan B program, whether you decide to stay in Dodge (the US) or not!   One significant part of your preparation should be to put together a medicine cabinet, because when the Unaffordable Healthcare Act fully kicks in, it may not be possible to secure critical prescription items such as antibiotics, even with a prescription. Yet it is possible to acquire antibiotics and other items today without a prescription.

Furthermore, as has already been the case in Canada for some years under socialized medicine, certain surgical procedures may be unavailable because of your lack of "social utility," especially depending on your age. Or wait lines may be so long that your prognosis changes from problematic to critical during the intervening time.

Also, new medical modalities may not be available here in the United States. This is why, as part of your Plan B, you need to know about medical tourism, through which it will be possible to access new alternatives, and to do so far less expensively than in the U.S.   A healtcare storm is about to descend upon us.  How do you prepare for it? Club For The Galacticly Stupid

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Thursday that the news media have an “obligation” to report that the Republicans are “unwilling to do what the American people want done” on looming automatic, across-the-board budget cuts.  During a news conference on Capitol Hill held on the eve of implementation of the cuts, known on Capitol Hill as “The Sequester,” a reporter asked Reid: “Can you understand the frustration of the American people that you’re blaming the Republicans, the Republicans are blaming you and nobody is talking until the day that these cuts kick in?”  Reid replied: “You know I read an editorial today, and I don’t know whether it was the Times or the Post, where the op-ed writer said, ‘You know, let’s call it the way it is. The Republicans aren’t willing to deal with the Democrats.  “So all this stuff--Democrats aren’t doing anything, Republicans aren’t doing anything--I believe that you guys have an obligation to report it the way it is,”...

Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) said that if the sequester goes into effect, women who are victims of domestic violence will be “forced to stay in their homes with their abuser” at the “hands of the GOP.”  The automatic across-the-board cuts, known as the sequester, are set to take effect on Friday – a 1.2% reduction in increased federal spending in 2013, or about $44 billion out of $3.6 trillion. Edwards called the cuts the “Republicans failure,” and said they are “taking a sledge hammer” to the nation’s domestic violence shelters and programs….

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney insisted that no one at the White House threatened Washington Post journalist  Bob Woodward over his reporting, despite what Woodward asserted on Wednesday during a CNN interview. Though Woodward did not initially say who made the threat during the CNN interview, it was later revealed to Politico that it was Obama’s chairman of the National Economic Council, Gene Sperling, who made the apparently foreboding remarks in an e-mail to Woodward.  “Gene Sperling, in keeping with a demeanor I have been familiar with for more than 20 years, was incredibly respectful,” Carney told reporters on Thursday. “It referred to Mr. Woodward as his friend and apologized for raising his voice. I think you cannot read those e-mails and come away with the impression that Gene was threatening anybody, as I think others have observed.”

Yale is considering joining Brown, Penn, Harvard and Cornell universities by picking up the tab for Ivy League students who want sex changes.  The New Haven, Conn., school is still reviewing policies regarding the procedure for its 5,322 undergraduate students and its 6,526 graduate and professional students, but has already extended gender reassignment coverage to employees.  "The benefit is offered to faculty and staff, and is being considered for students," Yale spokeswoman Karen Peart told FoxNews.com in an email. "Cost would vary depending on treatment."  Gabriel Murchison, a member of Yale’s Resource Alliance for Gender Equity (RAGE), told FoxNews.com gender reassignment surgery is just one of several areas where student health care should be on par with that offered to faculty, staff and their dependents....

And now a few comments from the Club's President, Maxine Walters.

Maxine Waters (D., Calif.), in an attempt to outdo President Obama’s claims that even minor cuts will bring the republic’s long run to an ignominious end, warned today that the sequester could cause “over 170 million jobs” to be lost:

This post claimed that only 134 million people have jobs. However, "This is very disturbing news," said Jonah Goldberg, because according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, fewer than 113 million Americans have full time jobs. Either way....how can you lose more jobs than exist? Don't you just love Maxine. You'll always know you're right if you take a view opposing hers. Thank you Maxine!

I know it is hard to match that kind of inspirational commentary, but the Club's Vice President has a few thoughts also.

Bloomberg: Don’t Panic, USA Has ‘Infinite Amount of Money’
Friday, March 1, 2013
While saying the federal deficit does indeed need to be curtailed, Mr. Bloomberg argued the United States could owe “an infinite amount of money” and there is no specific amount that would cause the country to default. “We are spending money we don’t have,” Mr. Bloomberg explained. “It’s not like your household. In your household, people are saying, ‘Oh, you can’t spend money you don’t have.’ That is true for your household because nobody is going to lend you an infinite amount of money. When it comes to the United States federal government, people do seem willing to lend us an infinite amount of money. … Our debt is so big and so many people own it that it’s preposterous to think that they would stop selling us more. It’s the old story: If you owe the bank $50,000, you got a problem. If you owe the bank $50 million, they got a problem. And that’s a problem for the lenders. They can’t stop lending us more money.”…

Michelle Obama: Walmart Fulfilling Its ‘Moral Obligations’ by Selling Healthy Foods

March 1, 2013  By Fred Lucas

First lady Michelle Obama is praising what has often been one of the left’s biggest targets, Walmart, for helping to fight obesity and “food deserts” in the United States.  “At Walmart, you can believe that as America’s largest retailer, you have an obligation that goes far beyond the bottom line,” Obama said Thursday at a Walmart in Springfield, Mo. “You know that every day, with the products you sell, you’re helping parents get by on a budget -- which is what everybody in this country is trying to do. You’re helping kids get the nutrition they need to learn and grow and fulfill their God-given potential and those aren’t just business opportunities. They’re moral obligations -- truly. They’re responsibilities to the health of our families and the future of our next generation.”…To Read More…..

My Take - I do so tire of this horsepucky.  Walmart has no moral responsibility other than to obey the law and honestly make as much money for their stockholders as they can.....which is coded in law and known as “ fiduciary responsibility”.....and that's it.   Get over it!

All this  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) claptrap these companies fall for is a clear demonstration that the guys at the top,  making the big bucks, are still capable of qualifying for the ‘Club of the Galacticly Stupid”.  When companies fail to properly identify why they are in business that is when things start to go wrong….just do your job and society can make all the other decisions.

Walmart already sold healthy foods.  I don’t care if its cake, candy, bacon or whatever else society wished to buy, the responsibility to decide what is healthy belongs to the public.  For people to be telling companies what they should be selling to society is a form of central planning, which has failed everywhere by everyone who has tried it.   It isn’t Walmart’s responsibility to tell people ‘what to buy’ it is their job to sell what the public ‘wants to buy’.   If there ever was a clear delineation between liberals (or whatever they wish to call themselves now) and conservatives this is it.  Conservatives who live a vegan lifestyle….if there are any….merely do it and keep it to themselves.  Leftists who live a vegan lifestyle aren’t happy until they can force everyone else to live one also.
I will say this.  If Michelle wishes to see that people only eat the kind of foods she approves of then let she and her friends collect enough money and buy Walmart and then sell what they deem proper......or moral as it were.  Or, if that is too expensive then start their own company in competition with Walmart and force them out of business by selling only what you determine is healthy.  I do so admire people act on their principles with their lives, money or both.  I'll be watching!

Has the Bell Begun to Toll for China?

By Patrick J. Buchanan March 1, 2013

"Why did the Soviet Union disintegrate? Why did the Soviet Communist Party collapse? An important reason was that their ideals and convictions wavered," China's new leader, Xi Jinping, told a closed meeting of party elite in Guangdong province.  "Finally all it took was one quiet word from Gorbachev to declare the dissolution of the Soviet Communist Party, and a great party was gone," said Xi, according to notes obtained by The New York Times.  "Everyone is talking about reform, but in fact everyone has a fear of reform," said Chinese historian Ma Jong. "The question is: Can society be kept under control while you go forward? That is the test." That is indeed the test.  What is it that gives a party its legitimacy, its right to rule? What holds a nation together when its cradle faith, its founding ideology, has been abandoned by both elites and the people? That is China's coming crisis….To Read More….

If It Turns Green It Isn’t Gold

By Rich Kozlovich

In years gone by you would hear about some girl who had been given a ring that looked like gold but left a green residue on the finger.  Well, there were a couple of things that were clear to everyone.  The ring wasn’t gold and the guy who gave it to her was a cheap phony.  Those promoting green initiatives in power generation, automotive enterprises, and who knows how many other things, fall into that category, but unfortunately, they aren’t cheap.  They are sticking the taxpayers with debts to the tune of billions of dollars for so-called green investments.  Those investments are going down the rat hole and there is no end in sight.

I subscribe to the e-newsletter from Environment and Climate news.  I received their latest edition for March yesterday which listed some economically green disasters for which the American taxpayer is on the hook.   As you read this you begin to wonder what is wrong with the minds of those who promote this stuff.  It certainly can’t be ignorance because we have historical foundation to show that all these ‘green’ initiatives are economically disastrous.  They were failures when promoted by Jimmy Carter, and they are still economically disastrous. The only difference is Carter could be excused for promoting these ‘alternative’ schemes because no one really knew if these were good ideas or not, and society had been prepped by circumstances for just such an effort.

He at least could claim ignorance, and in this case a valid argument, since every scientific success starts with ignorance, which is later dispelled through the trial and error processes of experimentation.  But now we knew the outcome even before they started.   We were led to believe that the technology was “new and improved”, which has always been a great sales slogan, and a great punch line by comedians who parody con artists in some skit, or movie script.

Although I have no doubt that there were improvements, those improvements were in no way so advanced as to make ‘green’ an economic success, and they had to know it. In short, it is impossible to believe that this wasn’t a deliberate effort to fraudulently promote this to the American taxpayer, who is now on a “green hook” financially. Ideology and financial gain can cause intelligent people to fall for really dumb ideas, but this is inexcusable. I use this quote from Viv Forbes as an explanation for these decisions regarding virtually every green issue that arises; “The public has been misled by an unholy alliance of environmental scaremongers, funds-seeking academics, sensation-seeking media, vote-seeking politicians and profit-seeking vested interests.” Please don’t tell me they were now ignorant.  They are driven by greed, ideology or both and someone ought to be prosecuted, starting with the politicos who signed these agreements.

In an article entitled, Delaware Taxpayers on the ‘Green’ Hook as Fisker Can’t Pay Bills by Alyssa Carducci, she notes that “Delaware taxpayers may lose a $21.5 million “investment” as Fisker Automotive took taxpayer money to create green jobs but has yet to produce a single car in the state.”  She goes on to say that the state will have to cover $400,000 in electric bills.

So how did this come about?  She says that;

In 2009 Gov. Jack Markell announced California-based Fisker Automotive Inc. would be setting up shop in the state after he offered the company $21.5 million in incentives. Delaware residents were promised 2,500 green jobs in return for their investment.

And the results have been a complete failure to the point that even the “U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) suspended a $529 million federal loan to Fisker.”   And it gets worse as she notes that; “Two months later, Fisker halted operations and laid off workers at a former General Motors site it had taken over in Delaware.”

My question has always been; how do they come up with these figures on how many jobs are going to be created with these initiatives?  It runs the gamut of a few hundred to five million.  What formula are they using?  Where did they get their insights?  And if they are that smart, why are they wasting their time in government?  In reality these people don’t have a clue.  People who pick and choose companies to invest in for a living have difficulty and fail regularly.  Why would we think a politician or a government bureaucrat would do any better?  As my friend David Hansen, who at the time was President of the Buckeye Institute, asked an audience to name one politician or bureaucrat who picked Microsoft as a winner.  No one put up their hand and for good reason.  There isn’t one.

James M. Taylor, managing editor of Environment and Climate News reported that “Florida Rep. Gaetz Seeks End to State’s Ethanol Mandates”, saying;

“Florida State Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach) will introduce legislation this year to repeal a state law requiring Florida service stations to sell only ethanol-blended gasoline. Energy experts say ethanol requirements raise transportation fuel costs, hike food prices, decrease gasoline mileage, and harm the environment in many ways.”

Even those who were going to stand against repealing this state law realized that “ethanol production in Florida is not viable”.  All these ‘Feel-Good’ Mandates have consequences, and one of those consequences is that “according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ethanol subsidies and mandates have caused a dramatic rise in U.S. food prices since 2005, reversing 50 years of declining.”   Are we to believe no one could see this was going to happen? This should have been obvious to the most casual observer.

Promises that never materialize are perfectly exemplified in the ‘experimental’ wind turbines that were placed (less than two years ago) on roof of the Michael V. DiSalle Government Center in Toledo, Ohio.  They have now failed and all the expense for that fell on the backs of the taxpayers.

The promise by renewable energy advocates was that this scheme would save taxpayers thousands of dollars “each year” due to the reduction in their electricity bills.  It didn’t!  “The turbines ceased to spin and generate energy in March 2012. Beth Gianforcaro, state Development Services Agency (DSA) spokeswoman, reported the government agency deactivated the turbines due to maintenance and performance issues.”

Oh…yes….as always...... it gets worse.   Helix Wind Corp., the manufacturer and installer of these turbines went broke and is out of business.  So even if the state wanted to continue on with this scam they have no idea whether they can be fixed or who could do it.  This stuff is no different than any scam by any con artist that promises untold and unearned dollars for nothing.  What disturbs me the most about this particular scam is that it occurred in Ohio.  We don’t usually see things so stupidly.

Let’s face it; ‘going green’ is a bad investment, otherwise the world would have already ‘gone green’ from investments by private sector investors and wouldn’t have had to be subsidized by governments all over the world.  Bad green investments that end up down the rat hole are one thing, but there are other even more onerous consequences to ‘going green’.  Food prices are dramatically rising all over the world as a result of ethanol subsidies and mandates.  After fifty years of falling prices that trend has reversed, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  The so-called Arab Spring is believed to have been triggered by the rising cost of food caused by these ‘green’ mandates, and if that is the case this will only get worse worldwide.

The common theme from the green movement is that all of the things they promote; from the elimination of pesticides, promotion or organic farming, an abandonment of production of energy by traditional sources and means, the elimination of dams so that the rivers may flow free, taking over millions of acres of other people’s property in order to save some beetle, or mouse, or a flower which may be listed as an endangered species; is for humanities own good.  Horsepucky!  The reality is that the writings from the foundational thinkers of the green movement show they were misanthropic, blaming mankind for all sorts of calamities that had no basis in fact, much like the claims by Rachel Carson in Silent Spring.   And if that is doubted intellectually, we must at the very least, acknowledge that in the real world none of their schemes generate the utopia they say they desire.  In reality there are two things we can glean from history;  dystopia follows the green movement like Sancho Panza followed Don Quixote de La Mancha, a mad man, and if its green it isn't gold.

Ethanol: Bad Deal for Consumers Gets Worse

by Marlo Lewis on February 6, 2013

Responding to the anti-Renewable Fuel Standard Hill briefing discussed on this blog yesterday, Tom Buis, CEO of ethanol trade group Growth Energy, asserted that “homegrown American renewable energy provides consumers with a choice and savings” (Greenwire, subscription required). Rubbish. Under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), ethanol consumption is a mandate, not a choice.

Buis’s claim that ethanol relieves pain at the pump sounds plausible because a gallon of ethanol is cheaper than a gallon of gasoline. However, ethanol has about one-third less energy than gasoline and does not make up the difference in price. Consequently, the higher the ethanol blend, the worse mileage your car gets, and the more money you spend to drive a given distance.  FuelEconomy.Gov, a Web site jointly administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) calculates how much a typical motorist would spend in a year to fill up a flex-fuel vehicle with either E85 (motor fuel made with 85% ethanol) or regular gasoline. The exact bottom line changes as gasoline and ethanol prices change. The big picture, though, is always the same:

Ethanol is a net money loser for the consumer.  …To Read More….

Study Links Ethanol Policy to Food Price Increases, Mideast Turmoil

by Marlo Lewis on February 8, 2013

A report published in October 2012 by the New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI) links soaring corn and agricultural commodity prices to food riots and turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East.  Although several factors may contribute to political unrest, acknowledge Dr. Yaneer Bar-Yam and two co-authors, “the timing of violent protests in North Africa and the Middle East in 2011 as well as earlier riots in 2008 coincides with large peaks in global food prices.” In poor countries with little or no local agriculture to “buffer” swings in global supply conditions, the central government “may be perceived to have a critical role in food security. Failure to provide security undermines the very reason for existence of the political system.”
In short:
When the ability of the political system to provide security for the population breaks down, popular support disappears. Conditions of widespread threat to security are particularly present when food is inaccessible to the population at large.
Soaring food prices triggered food riots in both 2008 and 2011….To Read More…..

Is Presumed EPA Nominee Trustworthy?

by Anthony Ward on February 26, 2013

The Washington Post reports that the President is poised to nominate Gina McCarthy to succeed Lisa Jackson (a.k.a. “Richard Windsor”) as EPA administrator. If/when the Senate takes up her confirmation, lawmakers should know that McCarthy, the current chief of Air Regulation at the EPA, has a history of misleading Congress and the public on two of EPA’s most expensive regulations.  As CEI Senior Fellow Marlo Lewis points out in a 2011 editorial:
[McCarthy and other EPA officials] denied under oath that motor vehicle greenhouse gas emission standards are “related to” fuel economy standards. In so doing, they denied plain facts they must know to be true. They lied to Congress…….
The record speaks for itself: McCarthy has been duplicitous on fuel-switching and emissions standards. Sounds like she’ll fit right in with the most open, transparent administration ever.

EPA Cuts 2012 Cellulosic Blending Target to Zero

by Marlo Lewis on February 28, 2013

“U.S. EPA has altered its cellulosic biofuel requirements for 2012 — from 8.65 million gallons to zero,” today’s Climatewire reports. In January, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated EPA’s 2012 cellulosic biofuels standard. “As a result,” Climatewire explains, ”obligated parties — oil companies required to show EPA that they blend biofuels in their fuel supply — won’t need to provide information on their compliance. The agency will submit refunds to companies that have submitted payments for 2012 cellulosic waiver credits.”…To Read More…..

Piracy on the High Seas

By Rich Kozlovich

It turns out that on Monday the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals delivered a ruling on something many of us have been saying for years.  The Sea Shepherds are “pirates”!   They're activities are now defined by the United States as being illegal actions on the high seas, with Chief Judge Alex Kozinski ,in agreement with the Japanese groups filing the suit against Sea Shepherd, saying;

"You don't need a peg leg or an eye patch," he wrote, according to AP. "When you ram ships; hurl glass containers of acid; drag metal-reinforced ropes in the water to damage propellers and rudders; launch smoke bombs and flares with hooks; and point high-powered lasers at other ships, you are, without a doubt, a pirate, no matter how high-minded you believe your purpose to be."

International  in the past

Most of us will remember the television show “Whale Wars” headed up by Paul Watson and his Sea Shepherd organization, whose purpose is to disrupt the annual whale hunt in Antarctica waters. I remember watching it and thinking; how can anyone not perceive this as piracy, especially since they attacked these ships while not flying a flag of any nation.  Technically that in itself made them pirates, until 2008, when, it is my understanding, they started flying the flag of the Netherlands.  Well, flying a nation’s flag or not, it’s the actions that constitute maritime piracy which is defined as; “The act of violence or depredation on the high seas.”

Watson and his attorneys insist that U.S. courts have no jurisdiction in these waters.  For most of us that would seem to be accurate.  However, piracy on the high seas has been going on forever and as a result the world’s nations decided the only way to effectively combat it was to join in cooperation with other nations.  As for the United States having jurisdiction in these waters;

“The power to criminalize piracy originated in the U.S. Constitution, which was followed by the first federal law in 1790 and crucial revisions over the next sixty years. Additionally, the United States and other nations cooperated to combat piracy in the twentieth century. This resulted in a unique shared view of jurisdiction: piracy on the high seas can be punished by any nation.

Although there have been variations in the laws governing what constitutes piracy, today it is governed by;

“antipiracy law [in] title 18, chapter 81, of the United States Code, although numerous other antipiracy provisions are scattered throughout the code. Additionally, international cooperation has shaped a unique form of jurisdictional agreement among nations. Significant in bringing about this cooperation was the geneva convention on the High Seas of April 29, 1958 and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The primary effect of such agreements is to allow pirates to be apprehended on the high seas—meaning outside of territorial limits—by the authorities of any nation and punished under its own law. This standard is unique because nations are generally forbidden by International Law from interfering with the vessels of another nation on the high sea.

Somehow I don’t think Watson’s argument regarding jurisdiction is going to float.  Now they have been declared, by a standing legal jurisdictional authority, as pirates, and any nation can now take legal action against them if they carry out any “act of violence or depredation on the high seas.”  I wonder.....do they still sink pirate ships.
