The Choice and the Challenge

By Rich Kozlovich, Tags:

On Saturday October 5, 2024 William Sullivan posted this article, Corrupt Union Longshoremen Will Hasten Port and Industry Automation, saying:

As many Americans now know, our economic and material well-being is in the hands of a gaggle of racketeering union thugs who, at any given moment, could hold Americans hostage as they make their demands.  This week, several thousand union dockworkers on the East and Gulf Coasts “began their first large-scale strike in nearly 50 years,” shutting down roughly half of American ports.  Americans appear to have gotten a temporary reprieve in the form of a “tentative agreement” which increases dockworkers’ pay, while tabling “all other outstanding issues” until 2025, when we can expect these thugs to once again threaten strikes at all American ports if their demands aren’t met.

Before this temporary agreement averted a long strike, Charles Payne warned the administration would be playing what I would call Russian Roulette by allowing this strike to occur and what it would do to the economy.

However, I see this as a much larger issue than a labor dispute!  It's a national crisis that is in serious need of proper definition in order to develop proper solutions.  It's about unions, it's about power, it's about control, and it isn't just about this union.

First, this fight against automation has been fought in every industry in America over the last 75 years, and automation always wins. Industry cannot abandon it, and it's a loser issue for the unions, but it's bigger than that.

The unions were infiltrated from the beginning by communists, a bit later by organized crime, and it's time America's labor laws were seriously altered. No union should have that kind of control. No union should in effect be a shadow government.

When Mussolini visited Sicily in 1924 the head mobster told Mussolini, in an effort to impress him, he didn't need all that security surrounding him since he was under the mob bosses protection. Mussolini wasn't impressed, he realized this guy represented a pseudo governmental power, and that was unacceptable to Mussolini.  So, he eliminated the Mafia in Italy.

Being a dictator he did it was monstrous but trumping up charges against them, finding them guilty, and then executing them.   As one mobster who was convicted said he was guilty of a lot of crimes they couldn't prove so the found him guilty of a crime he didn't' commit.  Mussolini's view was pretty much fell into the category of, so what, this is for the crimes you committed we didn't know about you should have been executed for.

At any rate, the lesson is clear. If you allow a pseudo government in any form, the nation's government ceases to be in control, and that's what's happening in Mexico, Venezuela, and other leftist swill holes. And we're seeing these thugs coming to America and literally taking over control of whole areas of the nation's cities they're infesting.

That's what this is all about. Surrendering control of the nation to enemies of all that America stands for, not wages, not automation, it's all about power and control of the nation by those who will destroy America.  And it isn't just this union.

The  teacher's unions, which are notoriously left wing are destroying the nation's future workers, thinkers, and leaders with their actions.   Negotiating for insane contracts that promote insane green initiatives,  and then claiming black children can't read because conservatives take an ‘oath’ to prevent black children from learning to read.

Well, I'm a conservative, and I never took such an oath, and I know a lot of conservatives, and they never took such an oath either.  It appears we all missed the meeting when that oath was taken, in fact, we're totally unaware of anyone who has ever heard of such a meeting.  So, when and where did this oath taking meeting take place?

Even if that insane statement were true, why would black teachers allow that, since in these schools it's black teachers who are doing the teaching?  Or is this another race mongering hustle to excuse their failure as teachers to teach this poor children to read, write, spell, and do the simple math needed to function as productive members of society?

Public employee unions should such as the not be allowed, and especially the teacher's unions. Biden has created IRS rules that have given the unions even more power.  Coercive, corrupt, extortionate destructive power, and it's time all these labor laws were readdressed to limit the power of unions.

That's the choice, and that's the challenge!

The Longshoreman Strike and Automation

By Rich Kozlovich

Well, the longshoreman's strike is on, and it has a potential for serious economic downturns with the union president declaring:

“These people today don’t know what a strike is, “I’ll cripple you........ I will cripple you.”

When this all started my first thought was if these companies are not negotiating it must be because these men are already making obscene amounts of money. So I decided to see if I could find out.  If this site is truthful, then what they're making can hardly be called big bucks, and in fact, they're underpaid in my view.  But that site is not being entirely honest.  The crane operators aren't like the dockworkers, and can make as much as $250,000 a year, and the union wants a five dollar an hour pay increase every year for five years, a 77% increase.  As the head of the union states:

“They’re not making millions no more. They’re making billions. And they’re spending it fast as they make it,”..... “I want a piece of that for my men...."

Well,  that's all hyperbole, and as far as I'm concerned how much the owners make and how much they spend is irrelevant.  On the other hand the companies are claiming the union's demands are so unreasonable the union isn't really willing to negotiate, but as far as I've been able to determine they're not explaining what they think is so unreasonable, although I think I know.

Normally I would think a 77% increase over six years is unreasonable, but considering how little the dock workers are making now, the companies need to come up with something substantial.   I don't think the biggest log in the fire is wages.  It's the union's demand for job guarantees against automation.   If that's the case, and I'm sure it is, that's a lost cause.

Automation has been fought in every industry in America, and automation always wins.  This battle isn't just about money, it's about control.   And now we find the union's leader is yacht-owning millionaire with allegedly unsavory connections, earning big bucks.   The big deal for him is if automation comes in, he will lose members, and it must be assumed that will ultimately impact his income.

The issue is all about automation and control, and truthfully, I'm inclined to think this may be a long strike, because the companies cannot abandon these technological advancements any more than Hollywood can abandon the advances accorded to movie makers over AI.

A Longshoreman Strike Is Bad for America – But Worse for Kamala

A coastal crisis with November ramifications.

By Sep 30, 2024 @ Liberty Nation News, Tags Articles, Opinion, Politics

Thousands of workers could strike early Tuesday from three dozen ports, crashing the supply chain and costing the US economy billions of dollars a day. That’s bad news for everyday Americans, none of whom have likely forgotten egg shortages or the toilet paper terrors that came after the whole world shut down for COVID. But as bad as it is for Americans, it may be worse for Kamala Harris. No, she probably won’t have to worry about running out of household goods like the rest of the country – but she certainly could be staring down the end of her political career.

A High Stakes Strike

Somewhere in the region of 45,000 longshoremen employed across 36 ports on the US Atlantic and Gulf Coasts could walk off the job come Tuesday, October 1. This high-stakes strike would shut down about half of US ocean imports and, according to analysis from JPMorgan, could cost the US economy about $5 billion each day. It could also drive up shipping costs, which would then likely be passed on to consumers. If the issue isn’t resolved quickly, look forward to increased wait times as products sit in containers with nobody to unload them and higher costs because of it.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), the union that represents port workers from Maine to Texas, has threatened to strike as soon as the current six-year contract is up at midnight on Monday, September 30. The issue at hand – as is often the case – is pay. The union and the US Maritime Alliance employer group have been negotiating the next contract since early summer, but the two groups are at an impasse on dock worker pay. The ILA demands an increase, and those demands aren’t being met.

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, about 53% of all US waterborne agricultural imports would be at risk – a potential value of about $1.1 billion in a week. Three-quarters of the nation’s banana imports and large quantities of coffee and cocoa could also be lost. The Soy Transportation Coalition suggests the strike might also affect container exports of soy products and would seriously impact frozen meat and eggs. The $18-billion-a-year beef and pork and the $5.8 -billion-a-year poultry and egg exports from the US rely on refrigerated containers. The longer they sit idle, the more likely all of that food goes to waste. The strike could also slow the flow of pharmaceutical products in and out of the US, according to Everstream Analytics, affecting an estimated 91% of imports and 69% of exports.

So, yes, toilet paper and eggs may yet again soon disappear from the shelves – but the big picture hit to both the individual consumer and the overall economy would hardly be so limited in scope.

The Political Costs

As disastrous as such a thing could be, the effects would eventually fade. A few years down the road, it’ll all be yet another unpleasant memory for most Americans. For Kamala Harris, however, the effects could be a bit more permanent.

If the strike happens, it’ll start on Tuesday, October 1 – the very day of the vice-presidential debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz, and there’s little over a month left until Election Day.

If the Biden administration does nothing and allows the strike to go ahead, it likely won’t bode well for the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate – the sitting vice president. Voters will go to the polls with fresh fears of critical shortages and anger over increased prices and the general inconvenience of it all. Who will they blame? Well, Donald Trump doesn’t have a hand in this mess – but Kamala Harris does. One might recall that Trump seemed well on his way to re-election before the COVID-19 pandemic and the deaths, shutdowns, and economic turmoil that followed. True, nobody is likely to die because of this strike – but effectively halting half of America’s trade with outside nations makes one nasty economic October surprise for the woman who is, for all practical effect in this particular situation, the incumbent running for re-election.

On the other hand, the Biden administration does have the authority, thanks to the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, to force the strikers to return to work. But Democrats are supposed to be the “pro-union” people – and Joe Biden touts his administration as the most pro-union ever. The loss of votes sure to follow the administration breaking a strike by union members would likely reverberate down the ballot, costing far more Democrats than just Kamala Harris their jobs.

It’s a damned if they do and damned if they don’t kind of situation, and there doesn’t seem to be a safe course of action available. Unless an agreement is reached quickly between employees and employers, Harris may pay the price.

Autoworkers Shouldn’t Expect to Have Jobs When Americans Can’t Buy Cars

ByOctober 04, 2023 @ Sultan Knish Blog

Biden spent 12 minutes on the UAW picket line. “You guys, the UAW, you saved the automobile industry back in 2008 and before,” he told the striking automotive workers.

“Wall Street didn’t build the country. The middle class built the country.”

And then he flew off to San Francisco for a fundraiser at Atherton, California, the most expensive area in the Bay Area, for a fundraiser at the $33 million home of Mark Heising: a Democrat megadonor who is also the Chair of the Environmental Defense Fund. Heising’s Medley Partners manages funds for his father-in-law and Renaissance Technologies founder Jim Simmons who has been described as “the greatest modern day moneymaker on Wall Street.”. So much for the pretense of choosing the “middle class” over Wall Street.

Biden may spend 12 minutes and speak for 87 seconds at the UAW picket line, but he spent hours raising money in the Bay Area which is the force destroying the automobile industry. In Michigan, Biden pays tribute to the middle class, but elsewhere, he bows to Wall Street.

The UAW didn’t save the American automobile industry in 2008, it helped nationalize it. And the Obama and Biden administrations used that leverage over the automobile industry to promote the Silicon Valley and environmentalist agenda of eliminating cars and replacing them with EVs.

Electric vehicles mark the death knell of the middle class. For Wall Street, EV companies like Tesla, funded by government fines on ordinary car manufacturers and buyers, offer the promise of getting in on the ground floor of a booming stock. Tesla has been followed by a series of other tech EV firms like Rivian (heavily backed by George Soros) that are not financially viable. Rivian, at one point, was spending $220,000 to make cars that it sold for $81,000.

But environmentalists are in love with EVs because they will end mass ownership of automobiles. The Biden administration, following the lead of Democrat states, is moving to end most sales of real cars by the 2030s. By 2032, 67% of cars are meant to be electric. And since 53% of Americans can’t afford EVs, that means most of the country won’t be able to own cars.

That’s bad news for automobile owners, it’s also bad news for automobile workers.

The UAW strike is a direct response to the growing investments by Ford and GM in EVs. These investments are deeply misguided and a complete disaster for shareholders. Ford loses an estimated $32,000 on every EV it sells and lost $3 billion in total on EVs in 2023. But don’t get the idea that Ford is selling many EVs. It only sold 61,575 EVs in 2022 and yet its projections say that it will sell 2 million in 2025. This is implausible without a government car ban.

But if Ford were to sell 2 million EVs, who’s going to cover the $64 billion in losses?

At the heart of Ford’s strategy are the ‘joint venture’ battery plans that are also the cause of the EV strike. These include a joint venture with SK Innovation, a massive South Korean company, and China’s CATL. While Biden promised that his disastrous ‘Inflation Increase Act’ would lead to the manufacturing of EV batteries in the United States, it has actually led to American automakers cashing in on subsidies through joint ventures with foreign companies. What domestic manufacturing means is American taxpayers subsidizing Ford’s $3.5 billion plant using China’s CATL battery technology. It also means the end of American cars.

The UAW is going on strike to demand that the workers assembling foreign tech in the foreign ‘joint venture’ plants should be unionized. Its demands include a four day work week. All the theatrics won’t change the fact that a full EV transition will eliminate many UAW jobs.

The American automobile industry will become even more of a government subsidized scam where a dwindling number of union workers install foreign tech in cars Americans can’t afford.

The industry is being squeezed on one side by the Biden administration to convert to EVs and squeezed on the other side by the UAW to maintain a pre-EV workforce. The only outcome will be more local, state and federal subsidies (the joint venture battery plants are already backed by billions in subsidies at every level) and the complete collapse of the American car industry.

The Biden administration wants Ford and GM to make EVs that Americans don’t want and can’t afford. The UAW wants a four hour work week that car manufacturers can’t afford. With lots of costs and no viable business model in sight, the subsidies will run out and the crash will come.

The quasi-nationalization of the automobile industry made it over on the model of subsidized British car companies that were unable to pursue their own business models, but had to shift with erratic government policies until they were hollowed out by American car companies. Now it’s the turn of government subsidized American car companies trying to meet the insane demands of Democrat administrations to be hollowed out by Chinese and Korean companies.

Ford and GM don’t exist to offer value to their shareholders, but to promote the political agendas of the Biden administration which simultaneously orders the automakers to meet the green mandates of San Fran tech elite class and the four day work week demands of the UAW.

The automakers couldn’t even do one of these things, they certainly can’t do both.

The entire purpose of the EV transition is for automakers to sell fewer cars for more money, but Ford and GM can’t be Tesla. (Since Tesla is funded by carbon credit fines leveled on traditional car companies, it’s not clear that any other company can be Tesla, or that there should even be a Tesla.) Selling fewer cars means that there will be fewer automobile manufacturing jobs. And if the goal is to sell fewer cars for more money, who needs GM and Ford, when Tesla exists?

China’s lock on rare earths and cheaper manufacturing means that whatever passes for an affordable EV will come out of the People’s Republic of China. That is the point of Ford’s joint venture $3.5 billion China plant. American automakers and auto workers are reduced to fighting over how much of a piece of the action they’ll take from the Chinese crap they foist on us.

The right hedge funds will make a good deal of money from the EV transition even as Americans are left with little choice except to take out a second mortgage to buy an EV or to try to keep their old car going. Democrats like Biden will pay tribute to the middle class on their occasional visits to declining auto plants before they cash their checks from San Francisco.

America’s automobile industry, once the envy of the world, will be little more than rusting factories and brands used by Chinese companies with no connection to Detroit.

It does not have to be this way.

The only way to save American car owners, workers and manufacturers is to stop EV mandates. People who want EVs should be able to buy them, but without the carbon credit fines imposed on car owners and makers, and without the bans on the sale of real cars. And automakers should not be forced to sell out their shareholders and customers to push EVs.

The UAW is selling its members the lie that they can have a four day work week and an EV transition. The only thing an EV transition means is the death of the American autoworker.

Autoworkers should not expect to have jobs when American can no longer buy cars.

Biden spent 87 seconds talking to UAW members and then hours pandering to the tech industry elites who are killing their jobs. The UAW shouldn’t be going on strike against Ford or GM, it should be going on strike against their car-killing bosses in the Biden administration.

HollyWeird: Hollywood Is Hungry! Food Drive for Striking Staff

Actors and writers still on strike, as negotiations stall and staff can’t afford essentials.

By Kelli Ballard August 30, 2023

Note: Whether on screen or off, Hollywood can always be counted on to keep us entertained. This is especially true when it comes to politics. Liberty Nation’s HollyWeird column shines the spotlight on Tinseltown’s A-listers and their wild and wacky takes on today’s events.

The Hollywood strike is having an effect not only on moviegoers and Netflix bingers but also on everyday workers in the industry who haven’t had an income in months. It’s not the A-listers who are suffering; it’s the staffers who get paid the lowest in the industry and now can’t afford basic necessities.

In California, striking workers cannot get unemployment benefits and they are not eligible for SNAP food benefits unless they qualified pre-strike. Support personnel, such as those who work on the set and provide transportation for actors, “tend to be low-paid,” Liz Hsiao Lan Alper, co-founder of Pay Up Hollywood and a Writers Guild of America West board member told The Hollywood Reporter. “So much of the compensation that they receive is, no one’s going to say it, but it’s implied to be food-based,” such as complimentary food provided in the writers’ rooms, agency kitchens, and conference rooms. “It’s invisible compensation that just went away when the work stoppages happened.”

Keith McNutt, executive director at the Entertainment Community Fund, whose donors include Steven Spielberg and Seth McFarlane, claimed there has been a huge increase of people requesting help for basic living expenses. “Before this started, we would do about 50 grants out of the L.A. office a week,” he told The Reporter. “Now we’re getting 50 applications a day.” He added, “This is happening right after the pandemic, which drained a lot of people’s savings.” The fund has already distributed $3 million to more than 1,500 workers as of Aug. 1.

A lot of organizations have come forward to help the struggling strikers.

The strike, which started in May, has made it difficult for staffers to make ends meet. Food drives and other financial resources have coalesced to help those in need. On July 28, 1,740 food boxes to feed about 8,700 people were distributed that day alone. Another food drive was held in August to help more than 1,000 households.

Pay Up Hollywood, on June 7, relaunched its COVID-19 Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund and has so far distributed nearly $45,000 in one-time financial grants, giving recipients up to $1,000 each.

SAG-AFTRA Foundation offers emergency help, including grocery gift cards, to its union members. In addition, the organization has already made a “seven-figure donation to the Foundation early in its strike to assist these efforts,” The Reporter explained, and the WGA West provides its members with emergency loans.

Groceries for Writers, administered by Humanitas, has given out more than 1,100 gift cards to WGA members since May. Humanitas Executive Director Michelle Franke told the outlet that “many of these writers have left notes indicating they’re in very urgent financial situations.” She continued:

“Writers describe struggling with student debt, falling into eligibility gaps with CalFresh and EDD [state unemployment assistance], eviction notices, writing teams splitting low pay, having only just moved to Los Angeles and not having a large local support network as a consequence, dwindling savings.”

Drew Carey, host of The Price Is Right, has vowed to pay for all striking writers dining at Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank as well as at LA’s Swingers Diner while the strike continues. Inspired by the actor’s generosity, Glen Curado, CEO and founder of World Harvest Food Bank, told The Reporter he is offering free food to striking writers and actors as well, serving a daily average of 150-200 members.

The writers and actors are on strike for several reasons, including better pay and working conditions. One of the biggest concerns is the studios’ use of artificial intelligence, which threatens jobs and reduces creativity. Currently, negotiations are stalled.

Tune in next time to see what else Tinseltown has planned. For more HollyWeird, click here.

Sarah Silverman is Really Angry!!!! Oh Nooo.... Not That! Oh, Wait....... Who Cares?

You’ve probably wondered why modern Hollywood churns out mindless pap that’s intermixed with graphic sex and violence and an in-your-face embrace of ideologies that are intended to offend ordinary Americans and indoctrinate their children. It’s this dreadful product that explains why so few Americans care about the writers’ and actors’ strike, for they understand that it doesn’t affect Hollywood’s toxic product. However, John Nolte, in a fascinating article, explains that the strike matters because it risks exposing Hollywood’s deepest, darkest secret, which is that it’s dying.  Yes, you read that correctly: Hollywood is dying.

As I've noted, one thing that comes out clear as a bell over this.  It appears America could care less.

These striking actors are the same brood who proclaimed they would leave America if Bush, and then if Trump was elected, and we've been waiting with bated breath for them to leave, and they just won't go.  To show just how clueless these nitwits are they actually thought such a threat meant something to Americans.    It appears America could care less if this strike could destroy Hollywood as we know it, and may be happy if it does.

Will America's lack of concern shake them up? Or even better yet, will it rattle them when they realize a substantial number of Americans would like to see Hollywood go down the drain?  Nah, egos that large crowds out sufficient room in their brains for any real intellectual depth.

They've been promoting and spouting every woke insanity there is, treating their audiences with contempt and disdain, and then are outraged when the public shuns their offerings.  Well, things are going to change from now on, whether for the better of for the worse remains to be seen.  Remember, leftism is like rust, it never sleeps.

But in the meanwhile, more and more strikers will cross the picket line, and these companies are going to go overseas. They're going to hire foreign actors, foreign writers, directors, etc, and they're going to expand the use of AI!

Writers, Actors Rage at Netflix for Advertising $900k Artificial Intelligence Job, Paul Bois Actors and writers have been raging at several major studios for seeking to hire artificial intelligence specialists in high-paying positions, which could potentially lead to the loss of jobs.  Since the Writers Guild of America (WGA) enacted its strike in May and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) enacted its strike in July, the debate has centered on the future of AI in the entertainment industry. While writers fear that AI could potentially be employed to write or rewrite scripts, actors also fear that the technology could severely diminish their use on camera; the studios, however, seem to have chosen to embrace the technology and are now actively seeking to employ technicians to help implement it.

Based on the pictures I've seen for the next season of the Witcher, with the face of Henry Cavill and the physical body of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, this is going to happen, the owners will not back down.  These Hollywood strikers are in trouble, including these overpaid pampered and catered to stars.

This is going to grow beyond anything their union can do to stop it.   From that point on all these mini talented "celebrities" with all their views on politics, geopolitics and social issues, will be parking cars, pumping gas, and waiting tables....again!  And major celebrities like Jane Fonda, Robert De Niro and a host of others will be ignored, and rightly so.

That's the way life goes.  The only thing in the world that's consistent is change.  Technology can, and will, replace an enormous number of jobs.  But people will have to change because everything changes, and the Hollywood misfits are long overdue for a dose of reality, and if that reality destroys Hollywood, the only people who will cry a river of tears are the woke misfits who destroyed it.

Hollywood may be in its death throes, and deservedly so

July 17, 2023 By Andrea Widburg

Hollywood once supported America and family values; it’s now antithetical to them. This means that many Americans are rooting for its collapse during a writers’ and actors’ strike over an industry change as significant and destructive as the advent of the car was to carriage makers.

I’m a huge fan of pre-1960s movies, and I know a fair amount about the history of Hollywood. In Hollywood’s early years, the executives behind it were almost entirely Jewish immigrants who found a niche in a brand-new industry and filled it.

Throughout the 1920s and into the very early 1930s, movie plots got progressively more sordid. However, in the face of combined pressure from consumers and politicians, Hollywood cleaned up its act, producing family- and America-friendly movies for the next 35 or so years until the social compact started falling apart in the mid-1960s.

Beginning in the mid-1960s, Hollywood turned against America. This was in part because industry followed the Baby Boomers, who were a huge source of funds and who were moving left at warp speed.........To Read More.....
