More than 180 people were arrested Monday during the third night of violence in the Netherlands, where rioters appear to have hijacked an anti-lockdown protest to cause destruction across the country.
The civil unrest began over the weekend in response to the Dutch government’s strict measures to slow the spread of COVID-19, which includes a newly imposed curfew between 9 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. But the seemingly peaceful demonstrations turned into chaos as groups of mostly teenagers began organizing on social media to attack public and private properties in different parts of the country.
Images shared on social media showed rioters looting stores, smashing windows, clashing with police, setting vehicles on fire and vandalizing buildings.
