Hurricane Sandy's Message to America

When Mother Nature demonstrates her extraordinary power, I always hope that people will draw a lesson from it, but they never seem to. Hurricane Sandy is just the latest example of the futility and foolishness of thinking that humans can do anything about a hurricane or similar demonstration of who is really in charge. It is the planet. Not us.
This suspension of common sense is worsened when our President goes on television, as he did last Friday on MTV, to say “I believe the scientists, who say that we are putting too much carbon emissions into the atmosphere, and it is heating the planet and it is going to have a severe effect.” This is literally junk science, long since debunked by legions of scientists who know that carbon dioxide has nothing to do with the Earth’s temperature. The planet has been in a cooling cycle since 1998.
I keep hoping, too, that lacking the vital lifeblood of our nation--electricity—millions of people sitting around in the dark will ask themselves where it comes from, what generates it, how does it get to their home, and perhaps even why its cost keeps increasing even though the U.S. sits atop enough coal and natural gas to provide affordable power for two hundred years at current consumption rates.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) in March of this year electricity from coal has fallen from 50% production to less than 40% by the end of 2011. Other sources include natural gas at 26%, nuclear at 22%, hydroelectric at 7% and “other” was said to be 6%. It should be noted that oil is a transportation fuel and not used to generate electricity. I believe that the amount that solar and wind produces is more likely closer to three percent. It is unreliable and uncompetitive and requires a traditional plant as backup when the wind isn’t blowing or the sun is obscured by clouds and, of course, at night.
Not surprisingly, the environmental organizations such as Friends of the Earth and the Sierra Club are already beating the drums about “climate change”, asserting “unpredictable, extreme weather.” The planet is always in a state of climate change if for no other reason that it is subject to the seasons. Blaming extreme weather on “climate change” is just a code for keeping the “global warming” hoax alive. The only reason President Obama talks about climate change is his hope that a carbon tax can be imposed to raise more money for the government to waste.
Electricity is not magic. Some form of energy must be burned to generate it and then it must be transmitted by a huge, very old grid to consumers.
In January of this year, The North American Electric Reliability Corporation warned that the reliability of the grid was in jeopardy. Thanks to the Obama administration’s (i.e. EPA) relentless attack on coal, the NERC noted that beyond the 38 gigawatts of electricity capacity that has already been announced to retire, it estimated that another 35 to 59 gigawatts will come off-line by 2018 depending on the “scope and timing” of EPA regulations. If you think the downed lines that Hurricane Sandy will produce are a problem, consider a future in which the electricity they are supposed to distribute will be significantly reduced.
What most Americans don’t know is that coal is the fuel of choice to generate electricity in many other nations of the world. Just five years ago it produced fifty percent of our electricity, but today it is less than forty percent, the lowest share since data began to be collected in 1949. For example, China’s coal consumption grew 9.7% between 2010 and 2011. Last year China consumed 49% of the world’s coal supply. India’s coal consumption increased 9.2%
While the President blathers on MTV about CO2 emissions, my friend Dr. Jay Lehr, the Science Director of The Heartland Institute, dispatches that nonsense noting that “A simple volcanic eruption will cancel a decade of effort” to reduce emissions.
“Today,” says Dr. Lehr, “it is our government that is attempting to thwart our energy independence by blocking nearly every effort to develop our resources through completely unreasonable restrictions placed on us by the EPA and the Department of the Interior, and horrible policies of the Department of Energy which choose to throw unconscionable sums of money at renewable energy projects…”
Ultimately, while millions of Americans light candles in the dark or hope their flashlight batteries hold out, we have to ask WHY the Obama administration has waged a war on the provision of electricity.
This is a deliberate policy to weaken the nation’s capacity to function at every level and yet we are days away from an election where millions of Americans will vote to reelect Obama and send his Democratic Party minions to Congress.
It is in line with the Obama administration’s deliberate policy of reducing our military capacity on land, sea and air.
The only silver lining in the distress and disruption of Hurricane Sandy may be the awakening of voters to the critical need for more, not less, production of electricity, for improvements to the national grid, for more oil production for our transportation needs, and concurrent with this, the hundreds of thousands of jobs that such efforts would produce and billions it would generate to begin to reduce the national debt, now in excess of $16 trillion.
Long ago, the cartoon character, Pogo, famously said, “We have met the enemy and it is us.”
The enemy, I would suggest, is President Barack Hussein Obama, his many shadowy, unaccountable “czars” influencing energy policies, his Cabinet Secretaries of Energy and the Interior, and the rogue Environmental Protection Agency that is set to unleash regulations that will destroy the economy, aided and abetted by the nation’s environmental organizations.
That’s Hurricane Sandy’s message to America.

Thomas Friedman Defines Pro-Life As Life In Communist China
Over the weekend, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman took a few minutes off from his slavish boosterism of totalitarianism and Communist China to tell us all what it means to be pro-life in a column modestly titled Why I Am Pro-Life. What we learn is that he really hasn’t a clue on the subject.
This cri de coeur from Friedman comes from the success that social conservatives are experiencing in Republican primary elections. He takes aim at Richard Mourdock (who knocked off RINO Richard Lugar), Todd Aiken (who defeated two other pro-life candidates but has achieved notoriety with his unfortunate exegesis on human biology), and Joe Walsh (whose apparent sin is running against the rent-seeking Tammy Duckworth) and uses them as a point of departure to describe what being “pro-life” really means.
Not unsurprisingly from someone who is a big fan of a country that has a policy of forced abortions, pro-life doesn’t actually include being pro-life, rather pro-life in Friedman’s dystopic vision is lots of government regulation. Again unsurprisingly.
In his own inept way, Friedman tries to adopt George Lakoff’s “frames,” the concept that was so popular with liberals back in 2004, to co-opt the meaning of the term. To Read More……
My Take – The left has been from the very beginning completely aware that they can only win if they can redefine reality. That means almost everything they say is a logical fallacy. Friedman is no different. What is really scary is he has won a Pulitzer Prize.
North Korea Bites the Hand that Feeds It

What is US$40 million to the world’s second largest economy? The number, while not insignificant, is merely a sliver of the nearly US$6 billion in annual bilateral trade between China and its mercurial neighbor, North Korea.
Yet the recent news that Beijing and Pyongyang are at loggerheads over a quashed deal to build a Chinese-backed mine across the border has been the latest setback in a series of disagreements between the two. Earlier this week, the New York Times released a report detailing the fallout from a failed business relationship between Chinese mining giant Xiyang and authorities in North Korea. According to Xiyang officials, North Korea attempted to renegotiate its contract with the company about the mine after the fact in order to provide more financial incentives to the government officials helping to run the site.
After Xinyang officials complained to Pyongyang about kickbacks and lavish handouts to state supervisors with few tasks, the mine was closed and its materials seized. Chinese workers were unceremoniously evicted from the site by North Korean soldiers. The North refutes the accusation, claiming that Xiyang was making soaring profits from the mine due to the cheap price of iron ore in North Korea, as opposed to China. Putin's Russia Won't Achieve Super Power Status
While Mother Nature (super-storm hurricane Sandy) was causing destruction throughout the north-eastern seaboard of the United States on Monday, across on the other side of the world Russians were remembering a man-made destruction. Over a period of two years (1937-38), approximately 1.7 million people were arrested and sent to gulags, and of which more than 750,000 were executed under Joseph Stalin's brutal crackdown. Why is this Remembrance Day particularly poignant for the Russians this year? In all likelihood Russian efforts to regain superpower status is going to be associated with increased state repression. Although the Russians gained all sorts of freedoms in their strangely evolving democracy, they concurrently lost their real living standards over the entire decade of the 1990s. The primary goal of the recent State Duma bill that expands the definition of treason is political. As with the other repressive laws passed this summer and fall, Russians have begun feeling the heavy impact of the treason bill even before it has become a law. The Federal Security Service has kept a typically low profile until recently, deliberately staying in the shadows of the Investigative Committee and Interior Ministry. This behavior is inconsistent with the "new nobility" status that the agency held throughout the 2000s. Meanwhile, the opposition, which had preferred to stage pickets outside the offices of the Investigative Committee, switched to picketing FSB headquarters on Lubyanka after the anti-opposition film "Anatomy of a Protest 2" was broadcast on NTV, opposition figure Sergei Udaltsov was charged with trying to organize mass riots and opposition activist Leonid Razvozzhayev was abducted in Kiev……
In addition, treason charges can be used not only against those who reveal state secrets, but also against journalists, nongovernmental organizations and anyone else who receive "secret" information from any source. ……..In Russia, treason always has been more of an ideological than a legal concept, a leftover from the Soviet-era Criminal Code. Newark Teachers Claim to be ‘Indentured Servants’ Despite $57K Average Salary
Is it ever enough? That’s what citizens should be asking in Newark, where the teachers are claiming they are subject to “indentured servitude” for being forced to consider an “inhumane” collective bargaining agreement that many consider very union friendly.
The average Newark teacher’s pay is $57,926, according to teachersalaryinfo.com. That constitutes “indentured servitude”?
In 2011, EAGnews.org found that Newark teachers contributed a big fat zero to their health insurance benefits. Taxpayers, on the other hand, spent a healthy $111,742,197 to pay for teacher benefits. Yes, that’s $111 million to zero.
The school district receives a whopping $28,406 per student from state, federal and local sources. A great deal of that money goes to teachers for salary and benefits. That’s not enough to break the chains of servitude endured by the public school servants of Newark? If you listen to union activists, the answer would be “no.”
Newark union teachers have become unhinged at the idea of being held accountable for their students’ academic achievement. So much so, EAGNews.org reported, the union may actually reject the contract negotiated by its leaders, thereby snubbing a 14 percent raise. ……..
Apparently to these teachers, $57,926 per year is not enough to convince them to work harder to improve miserable student test scores, like a 56 percent proficiency rating in science for 8th graders or a 45 percent proficiency rating in math for the same students, according to GreatSchools.org. .......

PETA wants sign to memorialize fish killed in crash

An Irvine resident is requesting that the city install a sign to memorialize the hundreds of soles killed in a traffic crash in early October as they were being taken to Irvine Ranch Market. Technically, the fish were going to die anyway. And they weren't soles. They were bass, of the saltwater variety. The crash occurred Oct. 11 when a truck carrying 1,600 pounds of live fish and several tanks of pure oxygen crashed with two other vehicles. The oxygen was used to keep the saltwater bass alive as the fish were being taken to market.
In the letter, Dina Kourda, on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, asks the city's street-maintenance superintendent to place the sign at the site of the crash on Walnut and Yale avenues. The sign would read, “In memory of hundreds of fish who suffered and died at this spot,” to remind tractor-trailer drivers of their responsibility to the animals who are “hauled to their deaths every day,” according to the letter, provided by PETA. My Take – As usual, the leftists and anti-humanity green crowd take information that is meaningless and insist that everyone else accept their conclusions. If they believe all this about fish, then they just shouldn’t eat fish…..but that is never enough! A person from the right would merely stop eating fish. A person from the left would not only stop eating fish, but would insist that everyone else stop eating fish …..and would be more than happy to kill those who disagree. The left isn’t just wrong…..it really is evil. They worship the rocks, dirt and animals and hate people. Nothing more than modern Druids pushing a neo-pagan agenda that worships nature.

NBC's David Gregory isn't always a news reporter. As we're seeing with increasing frequency on that network, he's squashing stories. Call him an unreporter. On Sunday's "Meet the Press," he showed the extent to which he'll vaporize any suggestion that Team Obama failed to offer adequate protection from terrorists at our consulate in Benghazi.
Businesswoman Carly Fiorina slammed Obama's Libya response: "That attack went on for seven hours...[with the] Secretary of Defense saying he denied requests for help over that seven hours." Gregory cut her off: "We'll get to Libya a little bit later." Surprise: It never came up again.
It sounded a lot like 1999, when Gregory squashed RNC spokesman Cliff May on MSNBC as he tried to mention Juanita Broaddrick's rape charges against Bill Clinton. Benghazi -- No Mere 'October Surprise'
If you want to understand why conservatives have lost faith in the so-called mainstream media, you need to ponder the question: Where is the Benghazi feeding frenzy?
Unlike some of my colleagues on the right, I don't think there's a conspiracy at work. Rather, I think journalists tend to act on their instincts (some even brag about this; you could look it up). And, collectively, the mainstream media's instincts run liberal, making groupthink inevitable.
In 2000, a Democratic operative orchestrated an "October surprise" attack on George W. Bush, revealing that 24 years earlier, he'd been arrested for drunk driving. The media went into a feeding frenzy. "Is all the 24-hour coverage of Bush's 24-year-old DUI arrest the product of a liberal media almost drunk on the idea of sinking him, or is it a legitimate, indeed unavoidable news story?" asked Howard Kurtz in a segment for his CNN show "Reliable Sources." The consensus among the guests: It wasn't a legitimate news story. But the media kept going with it. …….it's hard to distinguish between conspiracy and groupthink. The good news resides, for a change, in California. The latest polls there show support for the insidious Proposition 37, which would mandate labels for many foods with genetically modified ingredients, is falling fast. Just 39.1 percent of likely voters support the measure, while 50.5 percent oppose the labeling requirements, the poll by the California Business Roundtable and the Pepperdine University School of Public Policy shows. As recently as six weeks ago, over 60 percent of likely voters supported the measure.
Last week one of the most prestigious scientific bodies in the world, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, joined a chorus of voices coming out against Prop. 37, saying genetically modified foods are no riskier than other foods and labeling would “mislead and falsely alarm consumers.” Just about every newspaper in California has also editorialized against Prop 37, despite a well-organized campaign spreading superstition and baseless fear, led by the mega-business interests associated with the organic food industry. My Take – Please notice just how important the media is to greenie propaganda. Let's not lose sight of reality......if the media turns against the greenies they are lost. That is where the battle really is and unfortunately far too many leaders in the pest control industry...and industry as a whole.... have abandoned that field of battle. If the news media wasn’t typically hand and glove in harmony with the greenies none of their agenda would ever have traction. I am amazed…pleasantly so….that the media is using real science and intelligence for now….but how long will that last? And what new issue will they become the supporters of corrupt science and greenie propaganda.
Decency demands an end to all ethanol fuel requirements now
Last year six million children starved to death around the world — again. On top of this, Worldhunger.org reports that 925 million people went hungry in 2010 worldwide. Anyone who has watched television late at night has seen the commercials for charity organizations showing starving and malnourished children struggling to survive another day in a plea for money to help alleviate their plight. Incredibly at the same time that millions of children are dying from malnutrition worldwide, the U.S. government in its war on fossil fuels has continued to push and promote the growing and burning of potential life-saving corn in our gas tanks. When we pull up to the gas pump and see that the gas has been mixed with up to fifteen percent ethanol, that is corn converted to fuel for your car. To Read More......
My Take - How can anyone read these statistics and not have broken hearts? Whether its global warming, pesticides, genetically modified foods, vaccinations, pharmaceuticals, organic food, chlorine in the water, synthetic fertilizers or power generation of every sort; everything the green movement is against is what made it possible for people to live longer healthier lives than ever in human history, and everything they support ends up killing millions.
They have stood against Golden Rice, a genetically modified food that would ultimately save millions of lives, and prevent five hundred thousand children a year from going blind in Southeast Asia. Why? We need to understand the green movement by the outcome of their actions, not by their words. The constantly make the statement; "It’s for the children" when they are pushing some new green agenda. Unfortunately it's the children who always suffer the most from their schemes. What they promote isn't "for the children"! What they promote is "to the children"!
The green movement is irrational and misanthropic; how else can you define people that promote programs that generate monstrous results; programs they know will be devastating to humanity. How do we know they have to know the truth? Because they have publically stated their misanthropy, and there is plenty of history to show what happens when their schemes are adopted. Leaders of the environmental movement want the human population seriously depleted. The "reasonable" ones only want the get rid of four or five billion people. The rest believe mankind is a virus that must be eradicated.
How can we reason with such people? We can’t; because for them to believe what they believe and to promote what they promote means they must be insane and morally defective. That is the only conclusion that makes any sense; because that is a conclusion based on the evidence of their actions.

Insisting ‘enough is enough’, John Hayes said turbines had been ‘peppered around the country’ with little or no regard for local opinion. He said existing sites and those in the pipeline would be enough to meet green commitments with no need for more. The intervention by Mr Hayes, who became energy minister in last month’s reshuffle, will delight 100-plus fellow Tory MPs who have urged David Cameron to take a more sceptical approach to onshore wind power. The significance of yesterday’s shock announcement by our Energy Minister John Hayes that the Government plans to put a firm limit on the building of any more onshore windfarms is hard to exaggerate. On the face of it, this promises to be the beginning of an end to one of the greatest and most dangerous political delusions of our time. Nowhere will this announcement be greeted with more delirious surprise than in all those hundreds of communities across the land where outraged local protest groups have formed in ever greater numbers to fight the onward march of what they see as the greatest threat to Britain’s countryside for centuries. The main question is whether this [anti-wind] determination is shared by any of Hayes’ colleagues — the Tory leadership, perhaps? After all, George Osborne has been fighting for cuts to those subsidies applied to renewable energy sources. And that attitude has been reflected in several recent appointments: Mr Hayes’s own switch to the energy department; Owen Paterson as the Secretary of State in charge of the environment brief; and Peter Lilley’s ascension, last week, to the Commons’ energy and climate change select committee. Sackett versus the EPA: There is more - Today the United States Supreme Court issued an opinion in Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency, a case brought by an Idaho couple represented by our friends at the Pacific Legal Foundation. It is a great victory for landowners facing the wrath of the EPA. Wyoming Liberty Group's Steve Klein's article was a refreshing change from the dozen or so articles I read or skimmed in the liberty-media and elsewhere in the days after the SCOTUS decision was announced. I even posted a comment – in general praising Steve's work – though it has not (as of Saturday the 24th at 1800 hours MT) been screened and posted. Today's Only Post! A Must Read Article!
Editor's Note: I have deliberately made this singular post the only post for the day because I want to make sure it doesn't get lost among a host of topics. This post is a "Must Read Article!"
….Obama has already promised to make climate change the centerpiece of his concern—with all that implies: “Green” energy policy, linked to loss of jobs (Keystone pipeline disapproval), rising gas prices (ethanol mandates), and crony capitalism (Solyndra).” ……He has also been uncharacteristically quiet about his efforts to “make electricity prices skyrocket.” But there is more in store if he is re-elected and unleashes the full regulatory apparatus of the EPA.

Earlier this month, Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla. ), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, released a new EPW Minority Report entitled, “A Look Ahead to EPA Regulations for 2013: Numerous Obama EPA Rules Placed On Hold until after the Election Spell Doom for Jobs and Economic Growth.”
This report enumerates the slew of environmental regulations that the Obama-Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has delayed or punted on before the election while President Obama is trying to earn votes; …………….
