Chris Wallace got an exclusive interview with President Trump for his “Fox News Sunday” show. How did Chris do? He and his colleague, Howard Kurtz, talked about it on Howie’s show “Media Buzz.” What kind of grade should they get from the public?
Trump made a comment that he knew Chris’ father. His biological father was Mike Wallace of “60 Minutes” fame. Trump probably also knew Chris’ step-father, Bill Leonard. Mike and Chris’s mother divorced when Chris was only one year old.
In a 1986 book, The Media Elite, S. Robert Lichter, Stanley Rothman and Linda S. Lichter related a story pertinent to our current situation. In their chapter, The Rashomon Principle, they quote Mike Wallace on the development of a segment until it reaches the air.
“We have the power to convey any picture you want.”.............Lichter [cited] a “60 Minutes” segment on Illinois Power, where the target had also filmed the interviews and put together their own film.............in virtually every case, the Illinois Power film shows “60 Minutes” omitting portions of interviews that offer evidence challenging its contentions against the power company........To Read More....
My Take - I used to be an avid watcher of Sixty Minutes and I remember a segment they did on the Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company. What do I remember about that segment? Eli Lilly refused to be interviewed by Sixty Minutes. I thought they must have something to hide. As time went by I became less enamored with this "news" show because I watched a segment they did about the Moonies. The Moonies agreed to do the interview provided that Sixty Minutes broadcast the entire interview, which Sixty Minutes refused to do.
Finally they came to an agreement allowing the Moonies to film the interview themselves along with CBS. What happened? Mike Wallace, normally self-assured, confident, in complete charge, was nervous, unsure, guarded and clearly not in complete charge. The end result not much happened with their broadcast about the Moonies.
I realized then the reason Eli Lilly didn't do the interview was because they knew it would be rigged. I realized that was probably the modus operandi all of their interviews. And Eli Lilly knew it.
What do I remember about the Eli Lilly story? Not a thing other than what I’ve stated, and no matter what the story was about, I’m willing to bet no one else remembers. But what if they had been able to get and interview and twist it into something nefarious? Would anyone remember then?
