Jamestown Foundation Senior Fellow Janusz Bugajski's latestbook, Failed State PRESS RELEASE—Russian State Media Attacks Jamestown Senior Fellow Janusz Bugajski's Newest Book as a "Plan to Destroy Russia" Washington, DC—In recent months, Russian state media has launched a series of attacks against The Jamestown Foundation and Senior Fellow Janusz Bugajski for his most recent book, Failed State: A Guide to Russia's Rupture. Having been previously attacked by the Russian Defense Ministry's Zvezda television program, the state-owned media outlets RIA Novosti and RT have now lashed out against Bugajski's latest work. 

The most heated denunciation of Bugajski and Failed State comes courtesy of RIA Novosti's Victoria Nikiforova in her article "The US Unveils Plan to Destroy Russia." Decrying Bugajski's Polish heritage and referring to him as "the next [Zbigniew] Brzezinski," Nikiforova claims Bugajski's analysis in Failed State is Washington's blueprint for the dismemberment and decolonization of Russia. Similarly, writing for the Kremlin-affiliated think tank the Strategic Culture Foundation, Alina Insanova writes that Failed State represents an American plot to encourage ethnic separatism and secession within the Russian Federation.

Not content with merely denouncing Bugajski's expertise in Russian-language state-owned media, RT published an opinion piece, in English, by RIA Novosti's Vladimir Kornilov titled "Time to Drop Our Illusions, the West is Waging a War to Destroy Russia." Expanding on the hysterics of Nikiforova's article, Kornilov describes Failed State as "a direct call to action by an outspoken Russophobe," claiming that Bugajski's book offers proof that the United States has been plotting the dismemberment of the Russian state since before the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine

The Buckeye Institute Fights Biden’s ARPA Tax Mandate in Court (Again) Columbus, OH – On Monday, The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in Texas v. Yellen with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The Buckeye Institute previously filed briefs in similar cases (Ohio v. Yellen, West Virginia v. Yellen, and Arizona v. Yellen), which urged those respective courts to rule that the Biden Administration’s tax mandate—included in the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)—is ambiguous and therefore unenforceable and that the treasury secretary cannot fix Congress’s error through regulatory action.   “As The Buckeye Institute has argued and several courts have already ruled, Congress must act clearly if it is applying conditions to a state’s receipt of federal funds and—in the case of this tax mandate—Congress failed to do so,” said Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute and an attorney on the case. “What is clear, however, is that with this federal tax mandate, the Biden Administration has attempted the most sweeping usurpation of state taxing authority in U.S. history.”   “We are confident that the Fifth Circuit will reject the Biden Administration’s attempt to bulldoze the Constitution’s separation of powers and usurp states’ core powers over state tax policy and public health and safety,” said Andrew M. The Buckeye Institute Asks Court for Permanent Injunction Against Biden Administration’s Tax Mandate Columbus, OH – The Buckeye Institute filed a second amicus brief in Ohio v. Yellen calling upon the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio to grant a permanent injunction to stop enforcement of the federal tax mandate, which was included in the American Rescue Plan Act. This second Buckeye brief argues that recent guidance from the U.S. Treasury Department fails to cure the deficiencies of the ambiguous and unconstitutional tax mandate.   “As The Buckeye Institute argued in its initial brief, and the Court agreed, ‘the Tax Mandate does not meet the floor for clarity that the Spending Clause imposes on federal legislation offering money to the States,’” said Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute. “After-the-fact guidance by the Treasury Department does not fix the constitutionally-broken law. The Constitution requires Congress—not the Treasury Department—to draw clear lines when encroaching on State sovereignty. CAIR Settles to Avoid an MEF-Funded Fraud Lawsuit

PHILADELPHIA – June 4, 2019 – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an Islamist group, agreed to mediation to avoid a fraud lawsuit, Lopez vs. CAIR. The American Freedom Law Center (AFLC) contested the suit with major funding from the Middle East Forum.

CAIR was accused of racketeering, breach of fiduciary duty, common law fraud, and much else because it allegedly defrauded hundreds of prospective clients in search of legal counsel. The lawsuit contends that Morris J. Days III, a CAIR employee, took money from Muslim clients in exchange for purported legal services. But Days was not an attorney, something that CAIR, according to the complaint (excerpted here), went to "Draconian and unconscionable" efforts to hide.

The lawsuit is but one example of CAIR's long and dismal record of dishonesty.

AFLC co-founder and senior counsel David Yerushalmi notes that "When we began this litigation 11 years ago, Daniel Pipes and the Middle East Forum stepped up to the plate to provide foundational financial and strategic support." While the terms of the settlement are confidential, "Lady Justice is smiling as a result of this support."

This case marks MEF's second major legal victory over CAIR in 2019. With substantial MEF funding, the Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund kicked CAIR out of the San Diego Unified School District. A settlement in the federal lawsuit against the District ended its "anti-Islamophobia initiative," which: (i) singled out Muslim students for special protections; and (ii) empowered CAIR to change the District's curriculum to portray Islam more favorably.

"That CAIR settled when accused of fraud and conspiracy confirms the ugly nature of this organization," notes Forum president Daniel Pipes. "As a 2006 lawsuit already established, it is a terrorist-supporting front organization that seeks to overthrow constitutional government in the United States and the installation of an Islamic theocracy."

We are in the midst of a cataclysmic battle, and you’ve likely heard very little about it.

Right now, the 30 year global warming fight in the US is coming to a pivotal juncture within the next few days. 

Dr. William Happer (an eminently qualified scientist in the White House) has proposed the Presidential Committee on Climate Science (PCCS). [Another possible name is Presidential Commission on Climate Security (also PCCS).]

In any case, it will consist of multiple qualified scientists who will review such significant issues as Global Warming’s impact on national security. They will try to extract the science from political science.

Those advocating for a genuine scientific assessment of the Global Warming issue, are in full support of the PCCS. 

Those who are opposed to a real scientific assessment of the Climate Change issue are against the PCCS. Not surprisingly, so far the most voices (probably 25 to 1) are in opposition (like here, here, here, here, here, and here.)

We need to make clear to the President that citizens are following the PCCS matter, and that citizens fully support this excellent idea. There are two ways to send the President a message on this topic:

New Report: Green Policies

Threaten Poor Nations

Efforts to decarbonise will kill millions in poor countries

London 4 May 2018. A new report from the Global Warming Policy Foundation finds that climate and green energy policies promoted by development organisations will cause millions of preventable deaths in the developing world.

The report, by eminent epidemiologist Mikko Paunio, says that international bodies and NGOs are trying to prevent poor countries from expanding their use of conventional fuels and have abandoned the so-called “energy ladder” — the gradual shift to cleaner types of fuel that underpinned the clean up of air quality in industrialised nations.

As Dr Paunio explains, this will have devastating consequences:

“Indoor air pollution from domestic fires kills millions every year. But instead of helping poor people to climb the energy ladder and clean the air in their communities, the poorest people are being given gimmicks like cookstoves, which make little difference to air quality, and solar panels, which are little more than a joke.”

What is worse, the greens inside and outside the development community are blaming air pollution on power stations, industry and cars, as a way to prevent any shift to industrial power production. As Dr Paunio makes clear, most air pollution in poor countries is in fact caused by burning low-quality biofuels and coal in domestic stoves:

“Trying to blame power stations for indoor air pollution might make greens feel they are saving the planet, but the reality is that they are allowing millions of deaths from air pollution to continue. The body count is going to rival that of the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century.”

200 Million At Risk

Domestic combustion of solid (bio)fuels is by far the number one global pollution problem. 4.3 million deaths annually are directly attributable to indoor air pollution (IAP) according to the World Health Organization.

Domestic combustion of solid biofuels kills almost six million people per year when its effects on ambient air quality are also taken into consideration.

The so called ‘energy ladder’ was introduced as a way of understanding how deaths from IAP might be prevented. The energy ladder seeks to reproduce the experience of rich countries, where households moved away from biofuels and were increasingly connected to electric grids or district heating systems, solving the IAP problem for good.

However, ever-growing resistance from the environmental movement has removed this beneficial approach from the development agenda. Environmentalists fear that by taking steps upwards on the energy ladder, from dirty solid fuels such as cow dung or crop residues, and towards use of electricity, poor countries would become wealthier and so increase their energy use and their carbon intensity. They have managed to persuade all important multilateral development bodies and the WHO to drop the energy ladder entirely. Instead, they are now coercing the poorest countries to adopt utopian energy policies based on renewables. The result is that combatting IAP in, say, sub-Saharan Africa, is becoming impossible.

Aggressive decarbonization is now high on the political agenda. Contrary to the widely disseminated claims of important global actors, this will not solve the problem of IAP. Moreover, it will hamper the expansion of electric grids, which is a critical prerequisite for delivering adequate water supplies, without which it will be impossible to reproduce the public health miracle experienced in the rich countries.

These ‘ambitious’ global climate mitigation policies leave environmental health problems amongst the poor unaddressed and will result in the loss of over 200 million lives by 2050. They are also unlikely – even in theory – to prevent the 250,000 annual deaths that the WHO speculates will be attributable to climate change between 2030 and 2050: high-quality IPCC-linked research has recently shown that solid biomass combustion actually increases CO2 emissions, at least over the next 100 years, compared to fossil fuels.

Press Release 05/03/18: "Climate-Industrial Complex" Wasting £100 Billion And Shutting Down Debate - Warns Lilley

Britain's former Trade and Industry Minister, Peter Lilley warns that vested interests in the renewables industry, politicians of all parties, the bureaucracy and academia have together largely suppressed debate about their reckless waste of public money exposed by the government’s own Review of the Cost of Energy by Dieter Helm.

In a paper published by the Global Warming Policy Foundation, Peter Lilley highlights Professor Dieter Helm’s devastating critique, outlined in the Cost of Energy Review which was commissioned by the government.

“Helm shows that the Climate Change Act objective of cutting emissions of carbon dioxide could have been met for a fraction of the £100 billion so far committed, which has already raised the cost of energy by 20%.”

Lilley argues that, even more significant than the reckless waste of public money exposed by Professor Helm is the success of the vested interests – industrial, political, bureaucratic and academic – in dampening any debate about it. “Normally waste on this scale would cause an outcry in Parliament and elsewhere. But the vested interests simply damned Helm’s review with faint praise and consigned it to oblivion.”

It is evidence, Lilley claims, that President Eisenhower’s famous warning against the power of not just the ‘military-industrial complex’ but also similar combinations in areas of civil policy is coming true.

“As Eisenhower presciently warned: ‘...a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity...The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded’. We are seeing the emergence in the UK of a powerful ‘climate-industrial complex’”.

“Moreover, if the climate-industrial complex can show such reckless disregard for basic economic truths, there is a danger that they may be equally careless in exaggerating the risks arising from global warming science (the basic truth of which, as a scientist, I entirely accept). Most scientists remain scrupulously objective in their own work. But they know it is more than their career is worth to question exaggerated claims others may make of the scale, speed or impact of global warming. So, alarmist claims go unchallenged while evidence that we could adapt to global warming rather than try to prevent it is played down.”
