Don't Let 42 Republicans Spin Their Vote for Obama's Transgender Agenda
Ryan T. Anderson / @ryantand / / 158 comments
On Wednesday, 42 Republican members of Congress joined the Democrats to vote for President Barack Obama’s transgender agenda. Now they’re trying to spin their vote. These 42 Republicans voted for the Maloney amendment, which ratified Obama’s 2014 executive order barring private businesses who do contract work for the government from engaging in what the government considers to be “discrimination” on the basis of “sexual orientation and gender identity” in their private employment policies. (One member of Congress said he accidentally voted for the Maloney amendment.) As I pointed out in an earlier Daily Signal article, “discrimination” on the basis of “gender identity” can be something as simple as having a bathroom policy based on biological sex, not gender identity........
First, the IRS Took $68K From Connecticut Bakers. Now, It's Investigating Them.

For nearly 100 years, Vocatura’s Bakery has been a New England staple. The family business was started in Westerly, Rhode Island, in 1919 and moved to its current home in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1956. There, the family bakes bread using its six-decade-old industrial oven and serves up pizza—square, but not sicilian—and sandwiches—including one “as long as your forearm”—to members of the community. The bakery has been family-owned and operated since its opening in 1919, and today, it’s run by David Vocatura, Larry Vocatura, Frankie Vocatura, and Richard Vocatura. The foursome still remembers being pushed around the bakery in a hand truck and crawling into the turned-off oven to ride the baking trays around and around.......
What Obama's Bathroom Directive Really Does
Kelsey Harkness / @kelseyjharkness / / 183 comments
On May 13, the Obama administration sent a letter to public schools on the topic of transgender students and where they use the restroom. But the directive, issued as “significant guidance,” didn’t just apply to the bathrooms. It also entered the space of locker rooms, showers, dorms, overnight hotels, and other places you might not expect. Watch the video to see The Daily Signal break down where exactly the Obama administration’s bathroom directive applies, and where it doesn’t.......
Obamacare's 13th Co-Op Is Closing. Why More Could Follow.
Melissa Quinn / @MelissaQuinn97 / / 54 comments
Obamacare’s 13th co-op announced it’s closing ahead of the 2017 open enrollment period, and more of the nonprofit insurers could follow suit in the coming months. Ohio’s InHealth Mutual announced late last week it would be closing its doors after the state’s Department of Insurance requested to liquidate the insurer. As insurers prepare to submit proposed rate changes to the government ahead of the next open enrollment period, it’s likely Ohio’s co-op won’t be the last to close its doors.
“I think there are a couple of reasons why the picture will be clearer later in the summer,” Ed Haislmaier, a Heritage Foundation senior research fellow in health policy, told The Daily Signal. “First, insurers are making decisions to participate in the exchange and submitting rates. The other is the risk adjustment formula will kick in for the last plan year, 2015, this summer.”.......
The Zombie Voter Apocalypse: California Refuses to Admit Its Voter Fraud Problem
Hans von Spakovsky / @HvonSpakovsky / Jana Minich / / 123 comments
Hollywood has always loved making films about the walking dead, but in Southern California it appears they have a real life problem with “zombie” voters. An investigation by CBSLA2 and KCAL9 found that hundreds of deceased persons are still on voter registration rolls in the area, and that many of these names have been voting for years in Los Angeles. For example, John Cenkner died in 2003, according to Social Security Administration records, yet he voted in the 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2010 elections. His daughter told the station that she was “astounded” and couldn’t “understand how anybody” could get away with this....
Small Business Owner Forced to Get Rid of Health Care Benefits or Face Fine Up to $500K
Melissa Quinn / @MelissaQuinn97 / / 58 comments
When Maryland business owner Thomas Kunkel first learned about the Affordable Care Act, he was excited about the prospect of the new health care law. “From the small business standpoint, it was actually one of the first times I felt like a bit of a social program might actually benefit a small business,” he told The Daily Signal. “Usually it’s the opposite.” Kunkel owns Full House Marketing and Print in Edgewood, Maryland, and employs 21 full-time workers and up to 10 part-time employees. While he doesn’t provide them with health insurance, Kunkel cuts his workers a monthly check through a Health Reimbursement Agreement. Obamacare, he said, would allow a lot of his employees with pre-existing conditions to get insurance, especially those who had trouble purchasing coverage in the past.....
The Key Economic Facts Obama's Recovery Narrative Ignores
James Sherk / @JamesBSherk / / 84 comments
President Barack Obama took an economic victory lap in Elkhart, Indiana, on Wednesday.
In a major speech he argued his policies have brought the economy back. He blamed remaining economic weaknesses on trends preceding his administration. This analysis has the economic facts precisely backwards: Economic growth benefitted Americans up and down the income distribution until the Great Recession. Since then, Americans have struggled considerably. Obama argued his policies have brought the economy back. While labor market conditions have certainly improved from the depths of the recession—the official unemployment rate has even returned to pre-recession levels—these numbers do not tell the whole story........
1 Year After Steinle Death, San Francisco Unveils Immigration Policy Keeping 'Sanctuary' Protections
Josh Siegel / @SiegelScribe / / 35 comments
Nearly one year after Kate Steinle was killed in San Francisco allegedly by a man living in the U.S. illegally, the city has approved a new policy restricting the circumstances under which it will cooperate with immigration requests from the federal government. San Francisco’s new sheriff, Vicki Hennessy, and the city’s board of supervisors reached an agreement last week on legislation that bars law enforcement officials from notifying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials when they will release a person from custody, except under limited conditions. The death of Steinle, 32, in July 2015 and the arrest of Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez—a repeat drug offender from Mexico with multiple deportations—sparked a national conversation about local jurisdictions that have so-called “sanctuary” policies limiting their cooperation with federal immigration requests.......
