The US administration on Thursday endorsed a plan to cede its oversight of the gatekeeper of Internet addresses to the broader online community. Commerce Department assistant secretary for communications and information Lawrence Strickling told AFP that the proposal from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) meets the criteria set by the US administration.
Question two: Who are the biggest whiners? Totalitarian states who claim they want to make sure the internet is accessible all over the world. Baloney....they don't even allow it to be open in their own countries, and China is among the worst examples. At one point the Chinese people discovered Paradigms and Demographics and my number count from that country skyrocketed from almost zero to the number two spot daily, and within a year became the number two country for P and D hits. Then someone turned off the spigot and China has largely disappeared from the countries hitting my P and D. Venezuela's Supreme Court has ordered a ban on digital outlets 'La Patilla' and 'Caraota Digital' from publishing videos of lynchings, via their internet sites, as well as their social media accounts," because it causes unrest - in a country filled with crime and violence as a result of their leftist's government's corruption and incompetence. This is all about controlling what people read, see, think and do. And any argument to the contrary is a fallacy.
Third question: Can anyone demonstrate the current system has restricted anyone anywhere from access to the internet? And if that's not a problem why are they trying to "fix" this non-problem?
Fourth question: Will there be charges, fees or taxes to maintain access to the internet and how much will a new entity charge to maintain access to the internet - and make no mistake about this - if this goes international this will be a way of taxing America because the internet is an American entity used by Americans far more than all the other countries in the world combined.
One more thing. If these countries are so irritated at U.S. control of the internet - why don't they just create their own system, and do whatever it is that pleases them and go away and leave the rest of us alone. Because they - just like the agency promoting this insanity - are all leftists, and leftists create nothing - they infiltrate, they undermine, they corrupt and eventually abscond with what others create before destroying what they've stolen.
The barbarians aren't just at the gate. They're now demanding to be the gatekeepers.
The plan aims to maintain Internet governance under a "multi-stakeholder" model which avoids control of the online ecosystem by any single governmental body. "The Internet's multi-stakeholder community has risen to the challenge we gave them to develop a transition proposal that would ensure the Internet's domain name system will continue to operate as seamlessly as it currently does," Strickling said.
US oversight of ICANN had "irritated" some governments, which used what was Strickling depicted as a mainly clerical responsibility to vie for greater control of the Internet......To Read More.....
My Take - So the question that's not being asked is - just exactly why are these government "irritated" over US oversight? Here's the answer:
ICANN creates and distributes top-level domains (.com, .edu, etc.) and helps ensure that domain names correlate with Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (unique identifiers for computers on the Internet). It executes this task through stewardship of the authoritative root zone file, which is “the global address book for data” that contains a definitive list of the IP addresses and top-level domains. ICANN assumed these functions in the late 1990s in contracts with the US Commerce Department that grew out of the US government’s early development of the Internet. These oft-renewed contracts are why so many believe ICANN is controlled by the United States. Foreign governments resent this control because the top-level domain names are worth billions of dollars and have significant political and moral salience (think of .gay, or .islam). Control over domain names also entails the potential for censorship (by regulating domain name use on a global basis) that authoritarian states in particular find attractive.....The reality of internet control isn't just about money....it's about control.
