New York State
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman made a shocking announcement earlier this
month. He alleged that DNA tests his office commissioned found that about 80%
of GNC supplements tested, including those sold as Ginkgo Biloba,
St. John's Wort, and Ginseng didn't actually have any of the herb in the
capsules……He put out a press release filled with self-righteous and
self-serving statements from his allies including state legislators calling for
the passage of their own bills and from the food police group, Center for
Science in the Public Interest, lauding Mr. Schneiderman for doing "what
federal regulators should have done a long time ago."……The problem is, Mr.
Schneiderman's DNA tests, which he refuses to release, don't support his conclusion
that herbs weren't in the pills as marketed…….."That's because DNA
barcoding looks for a specific fragment of DNA, but the ingredients in herbal
supplements are often highly processed — crushed, dissolved, filtered and dried
— so that they may no longer contain the particular fragment of DNA that researchers
are searching for…..Mr. Schneiderman either "knew or should have
known," ……when launching an "open government" webpage, refuses
to share even the basic methodology of his taxpayer-funded study……To Read More .....
My Take -One of the things I really
appreciate about people on my side of all these green/left issues is
their consistency. Jeff has consistently opposed much of what has gone on in the
supplement industry and said so. With his view of supplements you might think
he would support this initiative by the New York Attorney General. Yet he takes
the high road and shows how this is nothing more than a corruption of science. He also says the AG is playing by rules of his own
making in his attack on GNC and other outlets. No matter how I may feel about
any of the issues I write about I feel it's important to not only be accurate
and to be right, but it's absolutely important to be consistent. The love of
facts and consistency of thought is completely alien to the
green/left. That makes it all the more important for our side to be all we
should be. After the corrupt practices of AG Spitzer you have to wonder if there are
any people who hold that office who aren't corrupt. You also
have to wonder when - or if - they will have to answer for their corruption. This is
costing people money, just as did Spitzer's corrupt mudslinging, and in both cases, with the aid
of the New York media. It certainly appears that corrupt New York officials and
the corrupt media are fused emotionally, intellectually, and philosophically. Can anyone be safe from that?
