Most EU Carmakers Report False CO2 Emissions

Tesla Throws Cold Water On Its Own Hype

Volkswagen’s diesel scandal could just be the tip of a very large iceberg when it comes to carmakers faking emissions figures. Carmakers are exploiting weak and outdated EU laws to claim misleading statistics about fuel efficiency, a new report says. Real-world CO2 emissions are up to 40 percent higher than in the lab. --Ben Knight, Deutsche Welle, 12 May 2016

Here's a dose of reality about Tesla's heavily hyped mass-market Model 3 electric car: The company hasn't yet finalized the design for the Model 3, hasn't selected its parts suppliers, isn't sure it can produce and deliver the car in volume and on time, and still needs to do "extensive testing" to make sure the car can meet quality standards and government regulations. --Michael Hiltzik,Los Angeles Times, 11 May 2016

The U.S. Energy Information Administration's recently released International Energy Outlook 2016 (IEO2016) projects that world energy consumption will grow by 48% between 2012 and 2040. Most of this growth will come from countries that are not in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), including countries where demand is driven by strong economic growth, particularly in Asia. Even though nonfossil fuels are expected to grow faster than fossil fuels (petroleum and other liquid fuels, natural gas, and coal), fossil fuels still account for more than three-quarters of world energy consumption through 2040. U.S. Energy Information Administration, 12 May 2016

The environmental benefits of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, are causing a split in the global green movement, according to an article published Wednesday in the progressive magazine Mother Jones. The split in the environmental movement has led to a green civil war over proposed EPA regulations intended to lower methane emissions from fracking. --Andrew Follett, The Daily Caller, 11 May 2016

A former scientific adviser to the government who helped to prepare a report in favour of fracking in Scotland has accused ministers of treating expert evidence with contempt. Professor Paul Younger accused the Scottish government of having “taken flight from reason” for imposing a moratorium on fracking for shale gas, driving away investment and jobs in the ailing energy sector. He warned that any scientist following “basic norms of professional integrity” would refuse to work with the SNP administration in future. He said that Scotland’s failure to embrace the technology was playing into the hands of the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, because western countries would be forced to rely on supplies of Russian natural gas. --Paris Gourtsoyannis, The Times, 12 May 2016

A paper recently published finds that there has been no significant global precipitation change from since 1850. The study is particularly critical of other studies which claim to have detected significant changes over the last few decades. --Paul Homewood, Not A Lot Of People Know That, 10 May 2016

Do you support free speech, individual liberties and protections for private property? You must be a liberal. Did that last sentence cause you to do a double take? I’m not surprised. I’ve been reading a new book, “The Closing of the Liberal Mind,” and it shows that much of what passes for liberalism today is, historically speaking, anything but. Most of today’s liberals (or “postmodern leftists,” to use Mr. Holmes’ preferred term) are not championing the right to offer opposing views, as their intellectual forebears would have done. They’re suppressing them. That’s how far today’s “liberals” have fallen. They’ve become the very thing they once denounced. --Ed Feulner, The Washington Times, 9 May 2016
