Members of an Austrian School of economics forum to which
I belong have been discussing the source of economic progress. It began with
the usual elements of capital, technological development, and managerial
expertise before getting more philosophical when a member suggested the
acceptance of rationality in all things. I felt this was not a proper answer,
because the definition of “rationality” is itself debatable and can be used by
political authorities to suppress unpopular ideas.
For example, in the Soviet Union, to question the
inevitable victory of communism and the ultimate transformation of man’s nature
to communist man would land one in an insane asylum. If you didn’t believe all that communist propaganda, you
must be crazy!.......In my search
for the answer to the question of the foundation of economic progress, I used
Mises’s regression theory for my thought experiment. I started with the
assumption that a completely unhampered free market produces the most
prosperity. (If you do not agree, then stop right here.) The primary elements
of such an economy would be capital accumulation, defense of property rights,
and the rule of law. It would not include collectivism, which elevates the
group — rarely defined and a moving target when it is defined — above the

My Take – As you read this please ponder the
events of the 20th century that have worked to eliminate the very
things foundational to the concept of individual rights; Judaic/Christian principles
via an understanding of the Bible, all being abandoned at a remarkable pace. Always
under attack by the left, academia and those who desire a society with no moral
restrictions society they wish to replace them with Marxist/Leninist concepts, which has no moral foundation other than the desire to hold power over their fellow man - with the goal of making the individual nothing. All of which history has shown is destructive
to a stable society.
For those of my readers who are believers the
answer is simple. It’s the Devil at work
to dominate man. For those of
my readers who aren’t believers the answer is in the world’s history. It’s man’s desire to dominate man. Either way; the end result is a
world without a solid moral foundation with which to build sound societies - societies
where the rule of law is to be obeyed by all.
Although those in power have always
attempted to excuse their bad behavior and those
they favor - while strictly enforcing the laws against everyone else, even in
America - we find this kind of activity is now right out in
the open and not only is it ignored by the media, the media applauds them – and it's fast
becoming out of control. Please look
back over this week’s posts and observe what has occurred this week alone.
