On Monday, I attended the first meeting of the ad hoc committee which is
analyzing the merits of dismantling the mandatory State Bar in Arizona, HB2629,
and was pretty shocked to hear the State Bar's approach and arguments. It just
reinforces why Arizona doesn't need a mandatory Bar, but should have a
voluntary bar like 18 other states that believe in freedom. Especially since
Arizona is a right-to-work state; why are attorneys the only profession in the
state still allowed to be regulated by a heavyhanded, corrupt, left-leaning
union? First of all, it was refreshing to see such a diverse group of people on
the committee (unlike the State Bar itself, which is pretty white). There was a
criminal defense attorney, Hispanic attorney, and at least a couple of attorneys
involved in protecting freedom, including Clint Bolick from the Goldwater
Institute (he was absent yesterday) and Paul Avelar from the Institute for
