Participants in this week's poll aren't holding out much hope that a change in the Republican leadership of the House will do much to improve the way Congress operates. Nearly three in four readers responding say the departure of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, will have little effect on the dysfunctional Congress. Only 8% say they feel a new speaker will give the House a fresh start. The rest say it depends on who replaces Boehner in the speaker's chair. New poll Monday.
No -- Congress will continue to be dysfunctional | 73.53% |
Unsure -- It will depend on how the new speaker runs the House | 17.26% |
Yes -- Boehner's departure will give the House a new start | 8.35% |
None of the above/other | 0.86% |
US payroll growth disappoints - The economy gained 142,000 jobs last month, according to the Labor Department. The total is below economists' expectations. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.1%. Previously reported payroll gains for August and July have been revised downward.
Bush vs. Rubio, round one
- Republican
presidential hopefuls former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio of
Florida have been jostling one another behind the scenes for months -- but this
week, the gloves finally came off in public. Bush has been comparing Rubio to
President Barack Obama, saying he lacks the leadership skills to deliver
change, while Rubio supporters have been painting Bush as "desperate"
and increasingly irrelevant. "He's on the verge of becoming invisible in
this race, and all of a sudden, look who he's going after," says Peter
Brown, a top Rubio donor.
