Club For The Galacticly Stupid

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Thursday that the news media have an “obligation” to report that the Republicans are “unwilling to do what the American people want done” on looming automatic, across-the-board budget cuts.  During a news conference on Capitol Hill held on the eve of implementation of the cuts, known on Capitol Hill as “The Sequester,” a reporter asked Reid: “Can you understand the frustration of the American people that you’re blaming the Republicans, the Republicans are blaming you and nobody is talking until the day that these cuts kick in?”  Reid replied: “You know I read an editorial today, and I don’t know whether it was the Times or the Post, where the op-ed writer said, ‘You know, let’s call it the way it is. The Republicans aren’t willing to deal with the Democrats.  “So all this stuff--Democrats aren’t doing anything, Republicans aren’t doing anything--I believe that you guys have an obligation to report it the way it is,”...

Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) said that if the sequester goes into effect, women who are victims of domestic violence will be “forced to stay in their homes with their abuser” at the “hands of the GOP.”  The automatic across-the-board cuts, known as the sequester, are set to take effect on Friday – a 1.2% reduction in increased federal spending in 2013, or about $44 billion out of $3.6 trillion. Edwards called the cuts the “Republicans failure,” and said they are “taking a sledge hammer” to the nation’s domestic violence shelters and programs….

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney insisted that no one at the White House threatened Washington Post journalist  Bob Woodward over his reporting, despite what Woodward asserted on Wednesday during a CNN interview. Though Woodward did not initially say who made the threat during the CNN interview, it was later revealed to Politico that it was Obama’s chairman of the National Economic Council, Gene Sperling, who made the apparently foreboding remarks in an e-mail to Woodward.  “Gene Sperling, in keeping with a demeanor I have been familiar with for more than 20 years, was incredibly respectful,” Carney told reporters on Thursday. “It referred to Mr. Woodward as his friend and apologized for raising his voice. I think you cannot read those e-mails and come away with the impression that Gene was threatening anybody, as I think others have observed.”

Yale is considering joining Brown, Penn, Harvard and Cornell universities by picking up the tab for Ivy League students who want sex changes.  The New Haven, Conn., school is still reviewing policies regarding the procedure for its 5,322 undergraduate students and its 6,526 graduate and professional students, but has already extended gender reassignment coverage to employees.  "The benefit is offered to faculty and staff, and is being considered for students," Yale spokeswoman Karen Peart told FoxNews.com in an email. "Cost would vary depending on treatment."  Gabriel Murchison, a member of Yale’s Resource Alliance for Gender Equity (RAGE), told FoxNews.com gender reassignment surgery is just one of several areas where student health care should be on par with that offered to faculty, staff and their dependents....

And now a few comments from the Club's President, Maxine Walters.

Maxine Waters (D., Calif.), in an attempt to outdo President Obama’s claims that even minor cuts will bring the republic’s long run to an ignominious end, warned today that the sequester could cause “over 170 million jobs” to be lost:

This post claimed that only 134 million people have jobs. However, "This is very disturbing news," said Jonah Goldberg, because according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, fewer than 113 million Americans have full time jobs. Either way....how can you lose more jobs than exist? Don't you just love Maxine. You'll always know you're right if you take a view opposing hers. Thank you Maxine!

I know it is hard to match that kind of inspirational commentary, but the Club's Vice President has a few thoughts also.

Bloomberg: Don’t Panic, USA Has ‘Infinite Amount of Money’
Friday, March 1, 2013
While saying the federal deficit does indeed need to be curtailed, Mr. Bloomberg argued the United States could owe “an infinite amount of money” and there is no specific amount that would cause the country to default. “We are spending money we don’t have,” Mr. Bloomberg explained. “It’s not like your household. In your household, people are saying, ‘Oh, you can’t spend money you don’t have.’ That is true for your household because nobody is going to lend you an infinite amount of money. When it comes to the United States federal government, people do seem willing to lend us an infinite amount of money. … Our debt is so big and so many people own it that it’s preposterous to think that they would stop selling us more. It’s the old story: If you owe the bank $50,000, you got a problem. If you owe the bank $50 million, they got a problem. And that’s a problem for the lenders. They can’t stop lending us more money.”…
