Larry Kilgore is so serious about Texas secession that
“Secede” is his middle name. Literally. The
perennial candidate had his name legally changed in 2012. Mr. Kilgore, a
telecommunications contractor from Arlington, sought the Republican nomination
for US Senate in 2008, and is now in the midst of his third attempt to win the
Republican nomination for governor. His slogan neatly summarizes his platform:
“Secession! All other issues can be dealt with later.” The primary will be held this March 4th.
Kilgore’s chances of being Texas’s next governor are remote to say the least.……
“The Constitution, in all its provisions,
looks to an indestructible Union composed of indestructible States,” wrote
Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, a Lincoln appointee……..the Constitution is
silent on the issue of secession. It does not say that states may secede, but
it also doesn’t say that they may not. It certainly doesn’t stipulate a
condition or conditions for secession. The court simply made that up.
The basis of the pro-secessionist argument is that the
states formed the Union, not the other way around. They voluntarily joined this
Union and they should be allowed to voluntarily leave.
I concur. A union of states held in perpetuity against
their will is not a union at all but a hostage situation. I don’t want to live
in a country composed of states that are held together by violence or threat of
