From the American Council on Science and Health

A new study shows that Finnish men on statins have a remarkably increased risk of diabetes - Evidence supporting a link - possibly causal - between statins and diabetes has been accumulating for a while. But never before has any study shown such an increased risk: 46 percent?! Of concern, but we would advise waiting for more confirmation.

The role of genetics in autism spectrum disorder - What causes autism? Everything from pollution to vaccines to labor induction/augmentation has been blamed, none of which has been proven by scientific research. A new study adds more evidence to the relationship between genetic factors and autism.
Chikungunya - a viral infection new to the Americas - makes you really sick. And is hard to spell - Infectious diseases have been the focus of many news stories over the past year. Here's another one: Chikungunya - a formerly tropical disease transferred by mosquitoes - has now spread to North and South America.

FDA confirms lack of drug residues in nation's milk supply - In spite of the fears of the organic advocates, conventionally produced milk is not contaminated with drug residues. Latest data from the FDA confirms the wholesomeness and safety of the nation's milk supply.

Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine recommended by CDC - In December, we wrote about the FDA approval of Gardasil 9, which protects against an additional 5 strains of HPV. Now, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is including Gardasil 9 in its HPV vaccine recommendation.

Tobacco advisory committee a nest of conflicted members. Some changes are at hand. - Since its inception in 2010, the FDA's Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee has been populated by highly conflicted "experts." Although powerless, still some rules need following. Federal Judge Leon agrees; CTP's Zeller does not.

Flu season may continue for several more weeks, according to CDC - Influenza activity is decreasing, but is still at elevated levels in the United States, according to the CDC. And while this year's vaccine is not so effective, antivirals are effective against the virus - at least in the laboratory.

Biosimilars: What are they, and are they OK? - The FDA, for the first time, approved a so-called "biosimilar" drug. Unlike generic copies of small-molecule drugs which are easily accomplished, biosimilars aren't identical to their brand counterparts. The question then becomes, is similar good enough?

Mediterranean diet seems to protect against heart ills - What can the Mediterranean diet do for you? Preliminary report from Greece to be presented at the American College of Cardiology suggests it might protect your heart - but emphasize the 'preliminary.'
