France’s Taxing Culture

France has long feared foreign competition as a threat to its domestic producers. The nation has some of the most punitive taxes and labor regulations that make their products more expensive compared to foreign goods. Surprisingly, France has recently proposed to implement trade barriers in the same sector the French have constantly reminded the rest of the world that they have a comparative advantage in — culture.
In May, a 500-page government-commissioned report was released discouraging the viewing of non-French cultural content and encouraging the viewing of French cultural content. The French President Francois Hollande quickly expressed support for the report’s proposals. Out of 80 recommendations, the most stunning was a 4-percent tax on the sale of all devices, including gaming consoles and digital readers that allow access via the Internet to “cultural content.” The revenue generated from this tax would go towards subsidizing French music, television, and film. Titled Culture: Act II, the report’s recommendations were meant to counteract the influence American culture has had on the Internet, which the reports states “constitutes an immense threat to cultural diversity.”…To Read More…..

My Take - What is it with the French?  How can restricting new words be in harmony with their thinking regarding multiculturalism?   I remember quite a few years ago when the French government came out with words that were forbidden because they were from America.  So they came up with French words that had to be used in their place.  Why?  Because these words from America were contaminating France and French culture.  Get over it France.  If you were as dynamic as America the air traffic controllers of the world would be speaking French instead of English.  If you had been able to win two World Wars without American help the world of diplomacy would still be speaking French.  France was the culture center of the western world for so long they came to believe it was theirs by divine right.  It isn't!

France is on its Fifth Republic, and is long on its way to a Sixth.  I would think they would have more important things to worry about.  Europe is a mess economically, and the E.U. is bound to collapse taking the Euro down with it.  Culturally Europe is being destroyed by Muslims, including France.....maybe especially France.  But their big worry is about the foreign words being used while Islam destroys the safety of their citizens.  There are areas of Paris that the French police don't dare to go because the Muslims have turned these areas into autonomous regions.  Dangerous autonomous regions!  What is the matter with these 'leaders'?

But then again, when the French keep choosing leadership that tells their them no changes should made in their cradle to the grave socialist protectionist economic policies that are destroying their society, their economy and their culture, what else can one expect. Protecting the language is going to be as effective as their protectionist socialist economic schemes.
