Spanish Trade Unions Call Nationwide General Strike On Nov 14

by RTT Staff Writer, Saturday 20th October, 2012
Spain's two main trade union called a general strike for November 14 on Friday to protest against the government's austerity measures.  The strike action, which is the second such move against the conservative government led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, will coincide with similar protests in Portugal and Greece. The first general strike was on March 29.
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) had earlier called for a day of action and solidarity across Europe on November 14 to express the strong opposition to governments' austerity measures, which it claims are dragging Europe into economic stagnation. The country's two biggest labor unions, CCOO and UGT, has called for the strike, which will be the second this year. The action comes as Spain faces the highest unemployment in the euro area amid a severe economic recession.
"It will be the first general strike in Iberian history," CCOO Communications Secretary Fernando Lezcano said. High unemployment, poverty, cuts in jobless benefits reduction in spending on health and education, justify the strike, he added.   This Appeared Here….
