Meet college president who won't tolerate 'snowflake rebellions'

'We've taught these kids this intellectual mush and this ideological narcissism'

Across the country, loud and sometime violent campus protesters are often met by administrators who ultimately give in to demands related to perceived slights on issues ranging from race to gender and sexuality to alleged hate speech. But one college president is fighting back, and he says the pursuit of truth – not unanimous political ideology – ought to be the goal of higher education.
Oklahoma Wesleyan University President Everett Piper burst on to the scene in late 2015 when he wrote an open letter to his students and famously explained their campus was not a day care but a university. He is also the author of the forthcoming book “Not A Day Care: A Coddled Nation is a Crippled Nation.”

..........“We’ve taught lousy ideas for decades in the academy, and we’re seeing lousy behavior on the campus green and in the campus quad today. These student rebellions, these snowflake rebellions, trigger warnings, microaggressions and safe spaces are being called for because we’ve taught these kids this intellectual mush and this ideological narcissism and nihilism”.......So why aren’t more administrators pushing back?.......“lack of spine, lack of courage, lack of conviction”............“Moms and dads, stop sending your kids to these institutions that teach this pablum, and send them to places that teach what’s actually objectively right and real and true and good,”..........Read more

Dershowitz on Obama: 'He Hurt America So Badly'

By Barbara Hollingsworth | December 27, 2016 | 1:16 PM EST
Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz says that although he and many other liberal Democrats supported President Obama's domestic policies, Obama “will go down in history as one of the worst foreign policy presidents ever.”
“He will go down in history, President Obama, as one of the worst foreign policy presidents ever,” Dershowitz said during a Monday interview on Fox & Friends. “What he did to Syria, and what he was partly responsible for happening in Aleppo, creating a vacuum for Russia. …

“Look, I supported his domestic policy. I liked him on Supreme Court appointments. But he created a terrible conflict for people, many like me liberal Democrats who support his domestic policy, but think he was an appalling--appalling--president when it comes to foreign policy. He hurt America so badly."........To Read More.....

Expert: Scientific studies no longer trustworthy

Blame placed on people conducting research 'and the subsequent media attention'

WND EXCLUSIVE

Don’t eat that! It will cause cancer. Wait, eat more of it! It will actually cure cancer.  A high-fat diet will make you obese! No wait, actually, a high-fat diet is the best way to get in shape!

It seems every day Americans are bombarded with breathless, contradictory headlines about their health. For Americans hoping to lose weight and avoid chronic illness, even reading the morning paper can be a baffling or infuriating process, as millions are told last week’s fad diet is now this week’s dangerous health risk.

But the phenomenon isn’t just a minor frustration. Science as a whole is suffering a “reproducibility crisis.”

For a discovery to have any value, different scientists repeating the same experiment under the same conditions need to get the same results. Yet research shows half of the medical studies trumpeted by the establishment media are found to be worthless after follow-up scrutiny..........Read more

How snowflake millennials are INFURIATING their senior colleagues with their workplace antics and why they really DO need to know their place.

By William Hanson for Mail Online 12 May 2017

The millennial generation are not to blame for their entitled and self-aggrandising behaviour – that’s the fault of their parents and upbringing.  What the millennials can do, however, is to adapt their behaviour and modify their instincts to get on and progress in the workplace.  So, Generation Y, I present you with some immediate suggestions and improvements you can make, starting today.

Know your place!

You may have been captain of the rugby team at school, a pretty big deal with your university’s social committee; your parents may be oozing with pride for you, but, millennials, when you join a firm in a graduate position you are bottom of the pile.

Get used to it or get out.

You’ll rise through the ranks in due course, but do not enter the work environment thinking or behaving like you are still a BNOC. You need to start over and prove yourself from scratch.
Sorry, it’s not all about you.

This Is How the Elite Poisons Our Culture

The New York Times Magazine takes an open-minded view of open marriage.

by David French May 12, 2017 3:19 PM @DavidAFrench

Let's imagine that one day, after many years of marriage, your wife comes to you and tells you that she’s deeply, profoundly dissatisfied. She’s lost any sense of her own sexuality, she’s losing connection with her “best self,” and she misses the thrill and intoxication of a new relationship. For the vast majority of married couples, a conversation like this would touch off an extraordinary crisis. It might be followed by the confession of a marriage-breaking affair, it might touch off a desperate effort to save the relationship, or it might launch a years-long cold war, leaving the couple to grind out their days together without solving their problems.

But a small number of couples settle on a different choice: They open the marriage. They become “non-monogamous” (the term preferred over “polyamorous”) and “explore their sexuality.”
........Sorry, but hedonism and self-obsession aren’t “advanced nanotechnology”; they’re sins as old as mankind. And the more Dominus writes, the more apparent it becomes that these old sins still have the same familiar consequences....... the open marriages frequently fail, flaming out in a tangled web of jealousy, sadness, and bizarro-world sexual practices.....  ....... In the meantime, those who actually act as if all choices are equally valid, fidelity is optional, and a lifelong faithful marriage is no more “right” than serial group sex, fall into a cultural and economic abyss. Lift taboos, and people will indulge in those taboos. The misery from their mistakes will reach across the land. .........Read more

My Take - Many years ago there was a Masters and Johnson book that proclaimed open marriage was the great happiness machine.   I guess divorce is another word for happiness?   Open marriage - oh....let's just call if for what it is.....infidelity......violates a major biological imperative - jealousy.  Not to mention the fact it destabilizes society.  Which is exactly what the left has been trying to bring about for decades.  I hate having to bring this up, but events keep pointing to it.  The Communist Takeover Of America - 45 Declared Goals.  Here ares some pertinent ones.
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."
40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.

Police Called to Escort Pro-Israel Activists From UC Irvine Campus Event

By Lidar Grave-Lazi Jerusalem Post May 13, 2017

A group of Israeli reservists had to be escorted out of a Students Supporting Israel speaking event by police following a large protest by pro-Palestinian students at the University of California, Irvine last week, The Jerusalem Post has learned.  The veterans were visiting the campus as part of Project Gideon — an initiative launched by Reservists on Duty, an anti-BDS group in Israel in collaboration with the Lone Soldier Center - which enlists American IDF reservists to fight against BDS on university and college campuses across North America..........Continue Reading.....

Jim Crow Returns to College Campuses

Segregation-In, Free Speech-Out

Written by Jake Fogg

Black college students all over the United States have called for segregation and “safe spaces” from white students. In a recent push by black student organizations, campuses are being issued hundreds of demands, some of which, ironically, are reminiscent of the Jim Crow Era. According to a news publication, The College Fix, last week, on Tuesday, approximately 150 students at the University of California, Santa Cruz, occupied a school administration building. The students belong to an organization know as the Afrikan/Black Student Alliance group (ABSA).  ......To Read More.....

My Take - The Communist Takeover Of America - 45 Declared Goals Here are a few which are relevant to the story.

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."

31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
 32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.

Oklahoma House Passes Resolution Declaring Abortion to be Murder

Written by Philip Hodges

A popular syllogism among pro-abortion activists starts with the premise that murder is illegal. Their second premise is that abortion is legal.

They conclude that abortion is obviously not murder.

An underlying premise that they don’t usually acknowledge – and which would necessarily change their conclusion – is that Supreme Court decisions don’t affect moral realities one bit. Just because a majority of a 9-judge panel opines that abortion is a protected act does not in any way alter the reality that killing an unborn child is just as much a murder as unjustifiably killing an adult.

Although it does not have the force of law, the Oklahoma state house passed their own official opinion of abortion in a resolution. CNS News reported:........To Read More....

Federal Judge Declares Constitution Void, Threatens Civil Defendant With Death

by Tyler Durden

Most Americans believe that we have a reasonably fair justice system with scholarly judges at the helm. Well, how about a federal judge who suspends the Constitution, confiscates all of a litigant’s assets, orders him not to hire defense counsel, and pronounces his orders enforceable by death?

That’s exactly what federal Judge Royal Furgeson did to Internet pioneer Jeff Baron, in a case that, New York lawyer David Relkin says is “the most outrageous denial of a person’s basic constitutional and human rights in this Country since the abolition of slavery.”

In the Texas case, Judge Furgeson “sentenced” Baron to an unprecedented “human receivership” to enable the judge’s lawyers to loot Baron’s Juvenile Diabetes Research Trust.

His offense? Baron was accused of not paying his lawyers enough money — “charges” that were later proven to be completely fabricated.

The decision is historic: a human being has not been placed in a receivership since slavery ended in 1865. During one of the hearings, and prior to an appellate court ruling that Judge Furgeson “abused his discretion,” Furgeson reminded Baron of his power:

“I have the full force of the Navy, Army [and] Marines behind me.”. . . You are a fool, a fool, a fool to screw with a federal judge, and if you don’t understand that, I can make you understand it.”

Background:

Baron is an Internet pioneer who, on a shoestring budget invented technology competitive with Google during the early days of the Internet, according to The Daily Caller. He became incredibly successful and had web sites with over 1 million visitors per day and monthly traffic of 50 million. Baron earmarked nearly all of his earned wealth to finding a cure for juvenile (type 1) diabetes —  a disease afflicting Baron since early childhood.

His success attracted attention, and he was soon enticed by another investor who promised to develop a search engine that would eclipse Google if Baron would partner with him.

That relationship soured fast when the investor embezzled $8 million, prompting Baron to sue for recovery. After this, the partner employed an army of lawyers with Baron’s stolen wealth and sued Baron six times, attempting to take the rest of the company’s assets. The partner lost all six times, according to World Net Daily.

When the partner sued a seventh time, Furgeson became the judge in charge. Furgeson forced Baron to settle the case on unfavorable terms. After the settlement was completed, Furgeson held a private, off-record meeting with Baron’s adversaries where the judge inexplicably put Baron into a human receivership, seizing everything Baron owned — from his home to his cell phone. Furgeson also indefinitely suspended most of Baron’s civil liberties.

“Apparently, there is a lot of money to be had here,” Furgeson said.  “Whether it's a receiver, judgment or whatever, he's going to be accountable unless he wants to live on a desert island somewhere and escape the clutches of the U.S. Army and the Navy and the Marines and the Air Force and the U.S. Marshals.”

At another hearing where Furgeson thought that Baron might appeal his rulings, he responded with a tirade:

“You want to challenge the court order, I have the marshals behind me. I can come to your house, pick you up, put you in jail. I can seize your property, do anything I need to do to enforce my orders . . .  So any failure to comply with that order is contempt, punishable with lots of dollars, punishable by possible jail, death.”

Relkin, an accomplished New York federal attorney says, “The only accurate analogy to Baron’s situation while under the Receiver’s control is that he became an inmate at Guantanamo Bay.”

According to the appellate court, the judge’s orders were so draconian that all of Baron’s property was seized and his personal mail was diverted. Baron, a type 1 diabetic, had to obtain approval from the court before seeking medical treatment.

The result was that Furgeson illegally forced Baron to unpaid labor for years, under the cloak of absolute immunity which all federal judges enjoy.  Furgeson thundered:

“This [proceeding] is going on and on and on until Mr. Baron has nothing. I mean actually everything is depleted. I gather that Mr. Baron is worth a lot of money.  But it may be that we sell all the domain names. We may sell all of his stock. We may cash in all of his CDs, and we may seize all of his bank accounts,”
Professor Ben Stein recently commented to Fox News that Americans are becoming powerless against abuse of power by Stalinist, liberal judges who are “dictators in black robes.”

"The judiciary is out of control, not bound by anything except themselves.” said Stein. “Judges don’t have to be bound by the Constitution or the law.”

While sounding fantastic and-far fetched, Baron’s situation is becoming more commonplace, as California lawyer Conrad Herring explains: “What happened to Baron, can happen to anyone. The system is obviously broken.”

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, an authority on judicial corruption himself, called for Judge Furgeson’s impeachment, explaining:

“I’ve found case after case after case where our judiciary is being used and misused, whether it be politicians misusing the courts to stop people from giving money to campaigns, or this [Jeff Baron’s] situation where the federal government, through the federal judiciary, has illegally confiscated someone’s property and destroyed their lives because they have a vendetta against them.”

The scene of judges in Hawaii and the California 9th Circuit usurping President Trump’s power in the area of national security serves as a reminder of a much broader and increasingly growing problem.

While the president has an army of lawyers at his disposal to keep rogue and activist judges in check, most Americans are far more at risk and powerless to defend themselves when they become? targets personally.

An average American finds himself at the mercy of a radical or corrupt judge bent on inflicting harm and is stuck with the judge’s tyrannical commandments without recourse.

Conrad Herring observes:

“The judicial system is prohibitively expensive for most citizens. When a judge acts beyond his or her authority, and sometimes abuses that authority as in the case of Jeff Baron, there is often little recourse unless a lawyer is willing to work pro bono to defend and protect the citizen’s rights. The abuse in the Baron receivership case was doubly egregious because it was initiated by unethical lawyers. Rather than hold these lawyers accountable, the judge in the case allowed them to thoroughly corrupt the legal process. Baron was stripped of most of his constitutional rights without due process, and then stripped of his assets. Although Baron was successful in his appeal of the unlawful receivership order, he is still today, five years later, fighting to recover the assets that were illegally taken from him.”

With a new day dawning in America, Baron is turning his efforts toward making America Great Again. His new Internet Freedom Project (IFP) is leading the drive to restore America’s stewardship of the Internet.

Liberal Segregationists Raise $27K For Harvard’s ‘Black Graduation’ Ceremony

By Andrew West May 13, 2017

The delusional American political left has been working long and hard on plans for a new segregationist movement in this country for quite some time, and even the prestigious Harvard University is no match for their army of “activists”.

Racism has taken a strange turn in the United States over the course of the last decade or so.  As generational progression occurs, the racism of the 1940’s and 1950’s is being scrubbed from the collective consciousness of America, leading the way for free thinking, unbiased members of society to flourish.  Young people in America today are having a hard time grasping the realities of those dark times in our nation’s history, as they are so far removed from those discriminatory thoughts and beliefs.

In turn, this has caused many around the nation to scoff at the idea of affirmative action.  Simply put, these younger generations don’t see race, therefore, they can’t justify a need for systemic equalization of opportunities for their fellow Americans of a differing complexion.

And this is where things get tricky......To Read More.....

My Take - The information is interesting, but his conclusion is all wrong.  It will take a lot more than cooperation from the black activists to overcome the racial divide in this nation.  As for racial and ethnic constructs being "artificial".  I would like for him to explain that.

The Fire Comey - Save Comey Comedy Show: Episode 3

How Dare Trump Fire Comey!
Daniel Greenfield 191
The Left’s shameless hypocrisy on the firing of the FBI Director. Before the election, Nancy Pelosi had hinted that Hillary would fire FBI Director James Comey.   "Maybe he's not in the right job," the House Dem leader had coyly suggested. "I think that we have to just get through this election and just see what the casualties are along the way."   The FBI Director was at risk of becoming a “casualty” over his handling of the Hillary investigation.  There was no outrage and no front page editorials at the New York Times and the Washington Post. No comparisons to Watergate or calls for an investigation. A top Dem suggesting that the FBI Director would have to leave because he was investigating another top Dem was just “good government.”......To Read More....

8 Lies the Media Told This Week about the Comey Story
By Onan Coca May 12, 2017

The great John Nolte should be profusely thanked for his constant efforts at unmasking the real progenitors of “fake news” in the mainstream media. This week he has laid bare their lies by focusing his time on one story in particular – the sad saga of former FBI Director James Comey.

Over the last week or so the media has breathlessly reported on every little whisper that has escaped from Washington, D.C. and for the most part – much of what they’ve told us has been wrong. Sadly, this is a common refrain from today’s media who can’t seem to get out of their own way and constantly seem to be tripping over their own failures and falsehoods.

It’s almost as if the media has an agenda that they are trying to promote and they are willing to sacrifice their reputation if it means pushing that agenda forward. In their attempts to use the Comey story to undermine the Trump administration they’ve sacrificed every iota of reputation and been unmasked as the biased hypocrites we’ve always suspected them to be. ......... Acting FBI Director says Comey Firing Won’t Impact Any of their Investigations
By Onan Coca
The current liberal talking point is that President Trump fired FBI Director Comey to try to slow down the ongoing investigation into Russia’s impact on our recent elections. There’s just one big problem with this talking point – it’s not true. On Thursday, the acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe testified on Capitol Hill and exposed all of the ongoing liberal cries of criminality as lies........... To Read More.....

Head of FBI Group: Agents 'Appalled' at Comey's Removal
By John Gizzi Newsmax May 13, 2017
Despite the White House claim that FBI Director James Comey had "lost the confidence" of his agents in the field, the head of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI told Newsmax that Comey was highly regarded by current and former agents.  "The overwhelming opinion of our membership is that Director Comey was outstanding," said Nancy Savage, executive director of the 80-year-old society that includes more than 8,500 members.........Continue Reading.....

My Take - According to Larry Klayman "this Is BS: Ethical Special Agents of the FBI are appalled and disgusted at Comey's political hackery at the agency. He took a dive on the Hillary investigation and covered up the NSA/CIA mass surveillance investigation triggered by my client Dennis Montgomery! See www.freedomwatchusa.org".

It's really interesting to watch the reporting on this.  First - when the FBI investigated Clinton he claimed there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute her, and it was claimed the people he worked with were so disgusted by his actions many wouldn't talk to him any longer.   Now that he's been fired by Trump it turns out he was adored by the agents, and worse yet there are those who are claiming he took a bullet to protect the integrity of the agency.  And now they claim agents within the agency are so outraged at  his firing they're fighting back against the administration.  Amazing!  How did such a turn about happen?

Here's what it comes down to.  His job was to investigate and turn over the facts of the investigation to the Attorney General.  That's what was his job.  It was Lynch's job to determine whether or not to prosecute.  As one writer noted:
"While Lynch "recused" herself after being caught in a tawdry tryst on the tarmac with Billy Boy, Comey was under no obligation to accept her "deference" to his judgment about whether to prosecute Hillary. The proper response for Comey would have been to summarize his findings, and pass them on to Lynch's Justice Department to decide about whether to proceed with prosecution. If Lynch wanted to remove herself from the decision, fine. Her second in command could have made the call. But when Comey decided all by his little lonesome that "no reasonable prosecutor" would bring charges, his ego overstepped his authority. Comey should have forced Justice to make the call."
If he feared turning over the facts of the agency's investigation into the Clintons to Lynch because she would have dumped that information and investigation for political reason he should have done his job and if she didn't do hers he should have resigned publicly - stating his reasons - and let it hit the fan.

The fact is he failed as an agent, a law enforcement officer and an administrator, and any agents attempting to strike back at the administration will be fired along with a host of other political hacks at the Justice department.

Larry Klayman says Comey should be tried and sent to prison.  Click to Watch Video

Dear Ivanka, Please Consider This

If you don’t already subscribe to Climate Change Weekly or other Heartland e-newsletters, you can quickly do so here.

NOTE: This week’s lead essay is excerpted from an open letter Heartland Institute President Joseph Bast sent to Ivanka Trump, daughter of and top advisor to President Donald Trump. The essay, published in The American Spectator, explains why the United States should not stay in the Paris climate agreement.

Dear Ms. Trump,

Recent news stories report your interest in the climate change issue. I share your deep concern over the future of our planet – it’s an unbelievably beautiful and precious thing, something we must cherish and protect for all of Earth’s creatures and for future generations.

I am writing to urge you to proceed carefully as you explore this subject, because those who claim climate change requires “immediate action” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or even “transforming the world’s economic system,” have often misrepresented the science and economics of this issue. The truth is climate change does not require that we reduce energy consumption or replace fossil fuels with alternative energies.

Your father is right when he questions whether global warming is a genuine “crisis” or a product of hype and exaggeration by various interest groups. He is also right to suggest the issue is being used to extort money from the United States, handicap American businesses, and undermine our economic growth and prosperity. …

Once you look at the underlying science – the same sort of number-crunching you would perform for a complicated business transaction – you will discover there is no scientific case for reducing our use of fossil fuels.

– Joseph Bast

HIGHER CARBON DIOXIDE REDUCES SOIL TOXINS

A paper in Chemosphere finds a little-discussed benefit of the effect of increased carbon dioxide on plant growth: At higher levels of carbon dioxide, plants remove greater amounts of toxins from the soil and at a faster pace. Soil contamination by heavy metals, including cadmium and lead, is a serious problem in many parts of the world. In China, it is estimated more than 20 million hectares of land are contaminated.

In controlled tests, the Chinese researchers involved in the study sowed black locust seeds in pots in open-top chambers maintained under ambient carbon dioxide levels of 385 parts per million (ppm) or elevated levels of 700 ppm. At 30-day intervals, 30, 60, and 90 days after the locust seeds sprouted, the researchers collected samples from each treatment. They found black locust grown under higher carbon dioxide levels were “associated with greater removal of heavy metals from … soils relative to ambient CO2 … [with] improvements in the microenvironment suggest[ing] that elevated carbon dioxide could benefit soil fertility … under heavy metal stress.”

That is: The plants studied remove from the soil greater amounts of toxins under conditions of elevated carbon dioxide levels, thus improving the soil’s fertility – its ability to grow crops and other useful plants suppressed under conditions of high heavy metal contamination.

ARCTIC SEA ICE LEVELS NOT UNUSUAL

Satellite monitoring has shown a dramatic decline in Arctic sea ice extent since at least the 1970s, especially in the late summer months. The timing of the start of the satellite measurements has proven unfortunate because it coincided with the end of several decades during which Arctic sea ice extent was generally increasing – so satellite recordings of sea ice began when ice was at high levels, making the subsequent measured decline seem both particularly sharp and unusual. However, long-term sea ice trends show this decline is not unusual and, at least over the past century, has tracked temperature trends in the Arctic.

A new paper in Hydrological Sciences Journal, using a new dataset describing seasonal and annual Arctic sea ice extents for the period 1901 through 2015 from North American, Nordic, and Siberian regions, shows the recent period of Arctic sea ice retreat since the 1970s followed a period of sea ice growth since the mid-1940s, which followed a period of sea ice retreat from the 1910s until expansion began in the 1940s.

PROOF OF PAUSE GROWING

A study in Scientific Reports adds to the growing body of peer-reviewed literature confirming the Earth experienced a hiatus in rising temperatures from at least 1998 through 2012 and links the temperature pause to natural factors, primarily a shift in ocean cycles coupled with changes in cloud distribution. Although NOAA researchers claim there never was a pause in global warming, this study confirms the pause, finds it comparable to a pause in temperatures measured from 1950 through the early 1970s, and says it is clearly recorded in global satellite data sets.

The researchers write: “Compared with the warming trend of the past several decades, the rate of increase of annual average global mean surface temperature (GMST) has experienced a reduction between 1998-2013, known as the hiatus. However, climate models designed to represent the physics and dynamics of the climate system project that GMST continued to rise in the early 2000s.”
The researchers posit the cause of the pause is a large shift in ocean circulation patterns coupled with changes in cloud distribution. The pause in surface warming is also evident in the troposphere and is due to a “transition of internal climate variability…, including interactions between large-scale circulation and cloud distribution.”

POLL: WEATHER FORECASTERS INCREASINGLY BUCK CLIMATE CONSENSUS

In 2016 the U.K.’s Guardian reported on a survey led by researchers at George Mason University’s Center for Climate Change Communication concerning the views of broadcast meteorologists on climate change and humanity’s role in it. The lead author of the survey was Edward Maibach, one of 20 academics who signed on to a letter to U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse arguing climate skeptics should be prosecuted for racketeering.

Nearly all weathercasters who responded to the 2016 survey said they believe climate change is happening, although just 67 percent said they thought humans were responsible for most climate change.

A new survey shows that percentage to be falling. Between 2016 and 2017, the number of broadcast meteorologists who responded to the survey and said they believe humans have caused most or all of the present climate changes fell from 67 percent to less than half, only 49 percent. In 2017, only 15 percent of the meteorologists responding to the survey thought climate change was largely or entirely man-made, falling from 29 percent in 2016. Twenty-one percent of respondents think climate change is more or less equally caused by human activity and natural events, while another 21 percent think climate change has been primarily or entirely due to natural events.

Among broadcast meteorologists, there never was a 97 percent consensus humans are causing dangerous climate change, and evidently even that tide is turning. Today, not even a majority of them support that view. If the views of broadcast meteorologists are any indication, the forces of climate realism are rising.

Land, energy and mineral lockdowns

Too many oil, gas, coal, rare earth and other vital resources are still off limits

Paul Driessen

President Trump has directed Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke to review recent land withdrawals under the 1906 Antiquities Act, to determine whether some should be reversed or reduced in size.

The review is long overdue. The act was intended to protect areas of historic, prehistoric or scientific value, with areas designated as monuments to be the smallest size compatible with the proper care and management of objects or sites to be protected. The first designation, the 1,347-acre Devils Tower National Monument (NM) respected that intent, as have most designations since then.

However, some were enormous withdrawals; several were made with poor public outreach or inadequate consultation with people who would be most directly and severely affected; 26 of the 27 monuments to be reviewed are over 100,000 acres in size; and the final one involves deficient consultation.

Arguably the two greatest Antiquities Act abuses affected Utah. The 1,880,461-acre Grand Staircase Escalante NM was designated by President Clinton in large part to make billion-dollar coal deposits off limits. Even Utah Governor Michael Levitt did not learn of it until it was a done deal (Chapter Twelve). President Obama designated the 1,351,849-acre Bear Ears monument three weeks before leaving office, many Utahans say to make still more energy resources off limits to exploration and development.

Grand Staircase alone is equal to Delaware and Rhode Island combined. It and Great Bears together are larger than Connecticut. They are far larger than any of the national parks in Utah. And they are in addition to Utah’s five other national monuments, five national parks, four national recreation and conservation areas, thousands of miles of national trails, six national forests, 31 national wilderness areas, and millions of acres in other restrictive land use categories.

Some of these areas truly are unique, beautiful, spectacular. I’ve visited and hiked in many of them in Utah, other western states and Alaska. Our national parks in particular should be protected. But we have gone overboard, and far too many areas have been put in lockdown specifically to block energy and mineral development. Forest Service officials and Sierra Club officers have said so right to my face.

Eastern and Midwestern residents cannot imagine the extent or impact of Federal Government ownership, management and control of lands in the eleven westernmost states and Alaska. While federal agencies own just 0.3% of Connecticut and Iowa, and 0.6% of New York, they own, manage and control 63% of all land in Utah; 61% in Alaska and Idaho; 80% in Nevada; 29% to 53% in the other western states.

That means virtually every revenue-producing, recreational and other activity is regulated, restricted, prohibited or under attack in courts and other venues. No timber cutting in national forests, fostering massive wildfires. No vehicles, wheelchairs, energy or mineral exploration in wilderness and many other areas. Even grazing and watershed management are under assault throughout the West.

All of these restrictive designations should be reviewed by Congress and Executive Branch agencies.

As of 1994, when consulting geologist Courtland Lee and I prepared a detailed analysis, over 410 million acres were effectively off limits to mineral exploration and development. That’s 66% of the nation’s public lands – an area equal to Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming combined. The situation is far worse today – posing a critical public policy problem.

Because of processes unleashed by plate tectonics and other geologic forces, these mountain, desert and other lands contain some of the most highly mineralized rock formations in North America. They almost certainly contain numerous world-class deposits of oil, gas, gold, silver, platinum, molybdenum and rare-earth metals – essential for modern civilization. They wait for us to find them, using modern prospecting technologies that can be carried in airplanes and backpacks, leaving barely a trace – but letting us know what is there, so that we can make informed land management decisions.

Environmentalists claim that even a single mine or oil well in these areas would destroy their wilderness character and ecological value. That is absurd, considering that many of these areas are the size of Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont or even West Virginia. Moreover, unlike wind turbine and solar panel installations across thousands or tens of thousands of acres in perpetuity, modern mines and drill pads are comparatively small – and are restored back to natural conditions when the operations have concluded.

Equally important, wind and solar generate minuscule amounts of electricity, unreliably, at unpredictable times – and require far more land and workers per unit of output  – than coal or natural gas. In fact, Coal generated an incredible 7,745 megawatt-hours of electricity per worker; natural gas 3,812 MWH per worker; wind a measly 836 MWH for every employee; and solar an abysmal 98 MWH per worker. That’s part of the reason why oil, gas and coal still provide 80% of America’s and the world’s energy.

America’s national security situation was affected when we depended on often unfriendly foreign sources for oil – before hydraulic fracturing unleashed record production from state and private lands.

Now we are dependent on different, still often unfriendly foreign suppliers for rare earth metals and other raw materials that are essential for smart phones and smart bombs, stealth fighters, digital cameras, computer hard drives, wind turbine magnets, photovoltaic solar panels, hybrid and electric car batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, catalytic converters, and countless other modern and future technologies.

China produces 97% of the world’s rare-earth oxides, largely controls world markets, and increasingly uses rare earths in-house, to manufacture products for sale overseas. That means most jobs stay in China, even though the rare earths are mined, processed and turned into finished products under environmental and worker health and safety standards that would get operations shut down instantly in the USA.

However, China’s estimated reserves are only one-third of known global reserves, and much less than that of potential economically producible rare earth resources – many of which could be in the United States. In fact, one of the largest known rare earth deposits is near California’s Mojave Desert. It had been in production, but legal actions, excessive regulations and low foreign prices forced a long suspension of operations, and Molycorp filed for bankruptcy in 2015, citing a heavy debt load and other problems.

That deposit underscores the enormous potential for finding billion-dollar deposits of numerous vital minerals right here in the USA – if we are permitted to look for them.

President Trump’s decisions to review Antiquities Act land closures, ease restrictions on onshore and offshore oil and gas drilling, and end stalemates over the Dakota and Keystone Pipelines are excellent steps in implementing his vision for American job creation and economic revitalization.

The President and Congress could also explore ways to get more oil flowing to the Trans Alaska Pipeline, which needs certain minimal amounts in the pipe for the oil to move during frigid weather. Recent discoveries along the North Slope have helped, and perhaps Prudhoe Bay’s declining oil production can be spurred some more by fracking. Ultimately, though, more Alaskan areas must be opened for drilling, and that will require White House, federal agency and congressional action.

Congress should also take a leadership role, by launching discussions about how much western state land really needs to remain under federal control, and how many of our best energy and mineral prospects really need to be kept off limits. Those land use policies severely affect job creation and economic opportunities for states, communities, families and our nation as a whole, for little environmental benefit.

Modern industrialized civilizations cannot long exist without the vital resources that come out of holes in the ground. Even wind turbines, solar panels, electric cars and internet services require a plethora of metals and other minerals – plus fossil fuel energy to extract those resources and convert them into usable products. It’s time to have a civil conversation about all of this.

Too many oil, gas, coal, rare earth and other vital resources are still off limits

Bill to Divest from Fossil Fuel Is a Senate Power Grab That Will Hurt New Yorkers

There's a good reason that the comptroller has sole authority over investment decisions

by Jeff Stier

More than a million fire fighters, police and other New York State employees who are relying on the already perilously funded New York State Common Retirement Fund as a key component of their nest eggs face a new threat. It comes from a surprising foe: New York's most liberal legislators.

Senator Liz Kreuger, who represents Manhattan's East Side, has introduced legislation that would force the fund's sole trustee and fiduciary, Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, to quickly sell all holdings in fossil fuel companies, no matter the financial impact it will have on return or risk.

Kreuger and her allies, who have introduced a companion bill in the Assembly, are doing so even over strong objections from DiNapoli and his respected investment team in the Comptroller's office, who are required by law to act only in the financial best interest of the fund's beneficiaries, state employees.

DiNapoli is no climate denier. He's been a champion of environmental causes throughout his career.
In fact, during the event at which he was given the New York State Bar Association's award for environmental achievement, DiNapoli opposed divestiture from fossil fuels because it would do more harm than good not only for investors, but for popular environmental causes.

In other words, not only would smart investors swoop in and buy the glut of stocks he'd have to dump on the market, he'd lose his powerful seat at the table as a major shareholder. He's been adept at using that clout to advance environmental causes through shareholder action.

DiNapoli's divestiture denouncement while receiving an award from the state's most prominent environmental lawyers was courageous.

His position also exemplifies the meaning of "fiduciary.".......To Read More....

A fool's errand: Al Gore's $15 trillion carbon tax

Fred Palmer, Washington Examiner

Al Gore, through his newly created Energy Transitions Commission, wants to reverse modernity and save the world from itself by eliminating its fossil-fuel-based energy system. It's the same scheme Gore has been pushing since his awful 1992 book, Earth in the Balance Gore's $15 trillion carbon tax plan would destroy the market for continued robust development of the world's fossil-fuel base. Our economic growth and personal well-being depend on robust fossil-fuel use, so Gore's plan would destroy these as well.......Since the first Earth Day, the flawed computer models backed by radical environmentalists have failed continuously, and we now know they can never serve as a reliable tool to make policy judgements governing the future of human life on Earth............ Pruitt Should Call for End to Ethanol Subsidies

Peter Ferrara, The Daily Caller

Scientific American reports roughly 40 percent of today's corn crop is used for ethanol made from corn, which is added to gasoline. That is more than the second largest use of corn "as feed for livestock" which consumes 36 percent of the annual corn crop. New EPA Chief Scott Pruitt and the rest of the Trump economic team need to recognize that the Renewable Fuel Standard and ethanol mandate represent a net loss to the economy, subtracting from growth. Abolishing the RFS and its tax would consequently amount to a pro-growth boost to the economy.......... Read More

Gary Ruskin, GMO Labeling Movement Funded by Anti-Vaxxers

By Alex Berezow — May 8, 2017

In an interview with Science, Seth Mnookin recalled how a public health official warned him that anti-vaxxers were particularly prominent in locations that had a Whole Foods. Mr. Mnookin concluded, "It's those communities with the Prius driving, composting, organic food-eating people."
So, that's why it wasn't surprising when March Against Monsanto, a group that opposes GMOs, became a full-blown, anti-vaccine conspiracy movement. In general, wherever there are anti-GMOers, there is a receptive audience for anti-vaccine activism, as well......To Read More....

Researchers have ditched the autism-vaccine theory. Here’s what they think actually causes it.

My Take - For years I've attempted to overcome the idea pesticides are a cause of autism and interestingly - now - that's not even being discussed.  One thing I always felt was an important clue that autism was a genetic issue was the fact autism is sexist!  Boys are more likely to suffer from autism than girls.

That's genetics it seems to me, and that was where I thought researchers should have targeted their efforts.  Unfortunately loons like Wakefield and his loony Hollywood supporters like Robert DeNiro, Jenny McCarthy, Jim Carrey and Oprah Winfrey infected the conversation and slowed the direction of good research.

When are we going to get real with celebrities and stop listening to the clabber they spew out? I'm a big fan of "question everything", but you don't stop questioning and start answering until all the evidence is in.  The evidence wasn't in because it was fraudulent, and as usual, Hollywood bought into it lock, stock and barrel.

I wonder if because they're so used to reading, memorizing and mouthing fiction for a living they're incapable of telling the difference any longer.

Anti-GMO and anti-vaccination campaigns – two faces of the same movement?

30 March 2016 Mark Lynas

Reading this piece in the Guardian – about the successful campaign by the pro-science community to get the Tribeca Film Festival to drop an anti-vaccine documentary directed by disgraced ‘MMR-autism’ doctor Andrew Wakefield – my interest was sparked by this paragraph towards the end: By Monday, conspiracy theorist websites were portraying the decision to pull Vaxxed as an act of censorship perpetuated by the “vaccine mafia”.

Wakefield and the film’s producer Del Bigtree put out a statement saying: “We have just witnessed yet another example of the power of corporate interests censoring free speech, art, and truth.” The link to ‘conspiracy theorist websites’ goes through to the infamous anti-GMO website NaturalNews, run by the self-styled ‘Health Ranger’ Mike Adams. (I declare an interest here: I was once accused by Adams, along with other pro-science communicators, of being a ‘Nazi Monsanto collaborator’ and targeted for assassination.)

It seems that NaturalNews is the standard bearer for Andrew Wakefield: it is now running banner ads for readers to get tickets to the rescheduled showing of ‘Vaxxed’ in a different theatre in New York under the heading ‘The Truth Cannot be Censored!’ This got me thinking of the expanding overlap between the anti-GMO and anti-vaccination movements. ..... My Take - Well, it would appear this greenie is slowing become....oooops.....here it comes.....oh, the horrors of it....... a conservative!  Well, you lefties who follow me - don't panic - he still has a long way to go.  But when he finally agrees Anthropogenic Global Warming is the greatest fraud ever perpetrated by science on humanity - he'll be there.  But there's the one big obstacle every leftie and greenie has to overcome to become sane.  They must come to realize leftism in all it's manifestations is irrational, misanthropic and morally defective.  That's a hard road for many to take, but that's the only reality that will allow them to recover their sanity.

Study Finds Native North American Mosquito Can Transmit Zika

By Josh Lancette

A new study from researchers at the University of North Dakota found that Aedes vexans, a mosquito species indigenous to North America, has the capability to transmit Zika. This is the first native North American mosquito species shown to be able to transmit the virus. The results are published today in the Journal of Medical Entomology.

To test the capability of the species to become infected with the virus, the researchers used mosquitoes collected from North Dakota and Minnesota and fed them blood containing Zika virus. Some (about 3 percent) developed infections. Then, infected mosquitoes were tested to see if they could transmit the virus. Surprisingly, Ae. vexans had a higher transmission rate than Aedes aegypti, which was tested alongside Ae. vexans in the study and is the primary vector of Zika. ......To Read More....

Political Humor For The Day

Posted byRich Kozlovich

Bedbugs were also found in government buildings in Washington D.C. I can’t believe they have to deal with those blood-sucking pests. Poor bedbugs.

Chuck Schumer called Harry Reid one day and said, “Harry, I have a plan to win back Middle America!” “Great Chuck, but how?” asked Harry.  “We’ll get some cheesy clothes and shoes, like most ordinary Americans wear, then stop at the pound and pick up a Labrador retriever. Then, we’ll go to a nice old country bar in Montana and show them how much admiration and respect we have for the hard-working people living there.”

So they did, and found just the place they were looking for in Bozeman, Montana. With the dog in tow, they walked inside and stepped up to the bar.

The Bartender took a step back and said, “Hey! Aren’t you Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer?”  “Yes we are!” said Chuck, “And what a lovely town you have here. We were passing through and Harry suggested we stop and take in some local color.”  They ordered a round of bourbon for the whole bar, and started chatting up a storm with anyone who would listen.

A few minutes later, a grizzled old rancher came in, walked up to the Labrador, lifted up its tail, looked underneath, shrugged his shoulders and walked out. A few moments later, in came another old rancher. He walked up to the dog, lifted up its tail, looked underneath, scratched his head and left the bar.

For the next hour, another dozen ranchers came in, lifted the dog’s tail, and left shaking their heads.
Finally, Chuck asked, “Why did all those old ranchers come in and look under the dog’s tail? Is it some sort of custom?”

“Lord no,” said the bartender. “Someone’s out there running around town, claiming there’s a Labrador Retriever in here with two a–holes!”

The Way We Were - The Way We Are!

By Rich Kozlovich

Islamism, Marxism, feminism, environmentalism and all the identity crisis issues we face today are nothing short of an attempt to not only destroy the existing power structure, but also the civilization it stands for and represents.

These leftist forces - whether they're presented as religious or secular - are attempting to conquer and destroy western culture from within by using our own values against us.  The only culture in the world with a foundational moral structure based on Judaic/Christian values and ethics, which is what they most despise.

It's obvious no military power is capable of doing that, so these movements exploit those features of our culture vulnerable to attack:  Our sense of fair play, chivalry, our concern for the well being of women and children,  our concern for the poor and helpless, our open society with its high degree of trust and empathy for others.

No one wants to be viewed as a racist, a misogynist, or uncaring for the suffering of others, so that's the unending charges leveled against society by the left to undermine western societies confidence in our culture.   The leftist proletariat is now made up of protected classes - the poor, women, religious, ethnic and racial minorities, homosexuals and transgenders. And all their solutions undermine western societies moral, financial and philosophical foundations.

Is this anything new? No!  This has been the modus operandi of the left for decades.  Here are the stated goals for The Communist Takeover Of America - published in the Congressional Record in 1963.

The question you should be asking is this:  Why didn't we know this before?

What's the Difference Between a VAT and a National Sales Tax?

By Rich Kozlovich

Originally years ago I held the view there wasn't much difference between a Value Added Tax (VAT) and a National Sales Tax (NST).  That was based on the fact I didn't really look up that difference and when I did - I realized how foolish that view was.  I think that lack of understanding is a common problem, so I think it wise to show there is a difference - a big difference - and as in any effort to reform a tax collection system - there's a big caveat I will address at the end.

A National Sales Tax is a tax imposed at the final sale to the consumer of the product in it's final form, by adding a percentage to the taxable price of the sale.  As an example, the sales tax in Lake Country Ohio is 7%.  If I buy a $100.00 item the final price is $107.00.   Easy to calculate, easy to understand and that's the end of it.

However, a VAT is imposed on every stage of production.  Here's one discription of that process:
"A refiner that takes metal ore and produces metal ingots adds value and pays a tax.  A manufacturer who then takes those ingots and turns them into nuts and bolts adds more value and pays a tax on that added value.  Another manufacturer who incorporates the nuts and bolts into products adds yet more value and pays a tax there.  Notice that the design of the VAT system avoids double taxing, since the tax is only on the value added by that stage in the production process.  At the end, the product sold will be taxed a uniform percentage, but the tax will be collected at each intermediate stage of the process."
The double taxing comment is misleading in my opinion, and here's why.  A VAT tax is indirectly applied all along the way, not at the end of the sale directly to the consumer - a sort of hidden tax.  And truthfully - I'm not sure if it won't be applied to the consumer by some economic machination once it became law.

But here's the big problem in my opinion - how do you calculate the "value added" at each stage?  Clearly that must involve some tricky calculations, and the more complicated anything becomes the less likely there will be complience, and I sure the more corrupt it becomes, and it's all hidden to the public.

When a sales tax is applied at the time of the sale, at a calculation rate that's easy to understand and easy for someone to calculate at the time - all in the open - that's more likely to be fair and above board.  But first we must come to the "big caveat".

Repeal the 16th Amendment "first"!  First!

That's the income tax amendment.  As hard as this may to believe - if both exist the Congress will rape the American people with out of control spending and taxation far beyond anything we're seeing today.

The biggest advantage to repealing the 16th Amendment and passing a National Sales Tax is there will be no need for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  They're out of control, and corrupt to the point a case of treason could be made against many of them.  Money will still have to be collected and accounted for but any collection agency could do that.  There will no need for an IRS as we know it.

That alone will amount to a massive savings to the American tax paying public since I'm told the amount of money collected from payroll taxes is the amount needed to fund the IRS.

If the Pro-VAT Cheering Section Succeeds, America Will Be Saddled with a Bigger Welfare State

May 12, 2017 by Dan Mitchell @ International Liberty

As I’ve written before, our fight to restrain the size and scope of government will be severely hamstrung – perhaps even mortally wounded – if the crowd in Washington ever succeeds in getting a value-added tax as a new source of revenue.

This is why many statists are pushing so hard for the VAT. It’s a money machine for big government.

But what makes this battle especially frustrating is that there are some otherwise sensible people who are on the wrong side of the issue. I was stunned, for instance, when Rand Paul and Ted Cruz included VATs as part of their presidential tax plans.

And I’ve been less surprised, but still disappointed, to find support for a VAT from people such as Tom Dolan, Greg Mankiw, and Paul Ryan, as well as Kevin Williamson, Josh Barro, and Andrew Stuttaford. And I wrote that Mitch Daniels, Herman Cain, and Mitt Romney were not overly attractive presidential candidates because they expressed openness to the VAT (methinks it is time to create a VAT Hall of Shame).

Now I have three more people to add to the list.

In a column for the Washington Times, Professor Peter Morici argues for a VAT instead of the income tax.
The current system imposes terribly high rates and a myriad of special-interest credits and deductions. It requires expensive record keeping that drives taxpayers mad and complex auditing functions at the Internal Revenue Service that have proven susceptible to political abuse… The most effective reform would be to simply junk the personal and corporate income taxes in favor of a VAT. The Treasury annually collects about $2 trillion through personal and corporate taxes. This could be replaced by an 11 percent national sales tax on all private purchases and payments.
This is good in theory, but it’s a high-risk fantasy. The politicians in DC who want a VAT are not proposing to get rid of other taxes. Instead, they want the VAT in addition to income taxes.

So unless Morici has some plan to fully repeal income taxes (and to amend the Constitution to prohibit income taxes from being imposed in the future), his support for a VAT plays into the hands of those who want a new levy to finance bigger government (which is exactly what happened in Europe).

Even more troubling, he confirms my fears that the border-adjustable tax serves as a stalking horse for a VAT.
Several House Republicans, led by Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady, propose to do essentially this for the corporate but not the personal income tax. …This proposal has…flaws. …The answer is simple — generalize Mr. Brady’s reforms to include the personal income tax as well. Junk it and impose a VAT of 11 percent on all economic activities.
Maybe now people will appreciate my concerns about the BAT.

Last but not least, I can’t resist pointing out that Morici is flat wrong about the VAT and trade. Heck, even Paul Krugman agrees with me on that topic.
Foreign governments rely more on value-added taxes (VAT), which approximates a national sales tax. Those are rebatable on exports and applied to imports under World Trade Organization rules… This places U.S.-based businesses at a competitive disadvantage.
Now let’s look at another column with a misguided message.  Writing for The Hill, Jim Carter of Emerson and former Congressman Geoff Davis argue for a VAT.
…enact a payroll tax holiday similar to the one Americans enjoyed in 2011 and 2012. Only this time the tax holiday would be permanent. …How can the government make up for the revenue lost from the payroll tax cut? One idea: eliminate the deduction that businesses get for the wages and benefits they pay their employees. …this would generate a massive $11.6 trillion in revenue over 10 years.
Call me crazy, but I get very nervous about plans that generate “massive…revenue” for Washington. Especially when the plan proposed by Carter and Davis is actually a subtraction-method VAT.
And just like Morici, they think the House Better Way Plan paves the way for that pernicious levy.
Abolishing labor deductibility also generates enough revenue to lower the tax rates on business income five percentage points below the rates envisioned by the House Republican “blueprint” for tax reform… Add the House blueprint’s other provisions…this modified House blueprint would be roughly revenue-neutral.
Moreover, Carter and Davis don’t even pretend that the income tax might be abolished. They prefer instead to go after the payroll tax, which is far less damaging.

Moreover, they want to add other statist policies to their VAT scheme.
Add President Trump’s childcare proposals and a Republican commitment to link tax reform to additional infrastructure funding, and congressional Democrats would have little excuse not to work with Republicans.
Of course Democrats would be interested. They would be getting the VAT they desperately need if they want to take entitlement reform off the table. And they also are being offered bad childcare policy and bad infrastructure policy as a bonus.

Now let’s look at a Washington Post column by Alan Murray.
…in tax policy, as in health-care policy, the United States is notoriously ineffective and inefficient. As the world’s richest nation, the United States has more capacity to tax than any other country. But…we rank near the bottom of industrialized nations in our effectiveness at doing so. …Reid…devotes a chapter to the value-added tax, which he calls “the most successful taxation innovation of the last sixty years.” …it turns out to be relatively easy to enforce. …Reid quotes former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan saying a VAT is the “least worst” way to raise taxes. “It has been adopted in every major nation on earth and in most small nations as well,” he says.
Yes, you read correctly. He’s grousing that the federal government isn’t demonstrating “effectiveness” when it comes to maximizing its “capacity to tax.”

This is the same statist mentality that led the World Bank to rank the United States near the bottom for “tax effort.”
For what it’s worth, I’m grateful that America hasn’t copied Europe by trying to squeeze every possible penny from taxpayers. And I’m specifically thankful that we haven’t copied them by imposing a VAT to finance bigger government.

I was amused by this passage in Murray’s column.
Critics of Reid’s plan, of course, won’t be hard to find. …Conservatives will attack the value-added tax as a money machine that leads to bigger government.
Of course supporters of limited government will make that complaint. That’s why statists want a VAT. Heck, Murray’s column openly states that the VAT would boost America’s “capacity to tax.”
For those who favor restraints on government, the last thing we want is a government that figures out ways to extract more revenue from the economy’s productive sector.

Let’s close by citing some research published last year.

Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Professor Ed Lazear of Stanford University warns that a VAT, even if part of an otherwise attractive tax plan, almost surely will lead to an increased burden of government spending.
…keeping a value-added tax low and substituting it for other more-regressive taxes has proven almost impossible. All 34 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, except the U.S., have a VAT. …26 countries have higher VATs now than they did when they first instituted the tax. …The U.K., Italy and Denmark have all raised their VATs by 10 percentage points or more. The VAT, wherever it has been implemented, has been a money machine for big government.
What about the notion that VATs simply replace other taxes?
Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
…for every 1 percentage point that the VAT increases, the tax burden rises by about 0.8 of a percentage point. Were it a pure substitute tax, raising the VAT would have no effect on total taxes collected because other taxes would be reduced by a corresponding amount. Unfortunately, that hardly ever happens. …America may be headed toward a European-style VAT tax and ever-larger government.
Prof. Lazear has some additional data posted at the Hoover Institution website. Here’s a chart that should frighten every fiscally responsible person.

And don’t forget the chart I shared showing how the VAT has jumped significantly in Europe in the past few years.

To conclude, here’s my video on why the value-added tax is so dangerous to good fiscal policy.

P.S. You can enjoy some amusing – but also painfully accurate – cartoons about the VAT by clicking here and here.

P.P.S. And my clinching argument is that Reagan opposed a VAT and Nixon supported a VAT. That tells you everything you need to know.

Trump launches commission to investigate voter fraud

Associated Press May 11, 017

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday launching a commission to review alleged voter fraud and voter suppression, building upon his unsubstantiated claims that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election.

The White House said the president's "Advisory Commission on Election Integrity" would examine allegations of improper voting and fraudulent voter registration in states and across the nation. Vice President Mike Pence will chair the panel and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach will be vice chair of the commission, which will report back to Trump by 2018.........Continue Reading.....
