The principle of giving ruling power to the governed, and not a government, is what set America apart from its beginning. The concept laid out in the Declaration of Independence, that our rights come from God and not man, has been her defining quality. It is why tyrants fear her and liberty-loving people everywhere want to be her. The first draft of the Declaration of Independence was presented to Congress on July 2, 1776, with its adoption occurring on July 4, 1776. It is now believed few, if any, actually signed it on that day, though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all declared its endorsement on the 4th.
