Bad Highway Policy Is a Bipartisan Affair

by Marc Scribner on February 28, 2014
Two major pieces of surface transportation policy news dropped this week. President Obama is readying the release of his budget, which will contain over $300 billion in transportation funding. Across the aisle, Rep. David Camp, R-Mich., the powerful chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, released a sweeping proposal to overhaul the U.S. tax code, which includes a component that would direct $120 billion in tax savings into the Highway Trust Fund…… In the run-up to the last highway bill reauthorization, I strongly criticized a proposal from House Republicans that would have created a new permanent non-user revenue stream for the Highway Trust Fund that relied on expanded drilling on federal lands and depositing a portion of the lease royalty revenues into the trust fund. While Camp’s proposal, like President Obama’s, would be a one-shot transfer — much like the gimmicky pay-fors contained in the MAP-21 law — relying this heavily on non-user revenue could open a Pandora’s Box of irresponsible transportation funding.…….The Brookings Institution’s Clifford Winston recently released two papers highlighting the huge inefficiencies resulting from the current political provision of transportation infrastructure and services. Winston concludes that government transportation authorities should either privatize these responsibilities or start behaving more like private sector actors. Stifling regulations that prevent the adoption of new technologies, irrational labor contracts, and good old fashioned bureaucratic incompetence are driving up costs and reducing quality of service delivery. It doesn’t have to be this way:.....To Read More.....

My Take - I'm a bit stunned. I find myself in total agreement with the Brookings Institute....once known unendingly as the "Liberal Brookings Institute".   And now I’m in agreement with the Brookings Institute….Really?  When did that change? I don’t know, but I know I missed it when it happened.  How did it happen?  I have no idea, but this link takes you to an article criticizing the change.  I really do have to believe at some point even liberals have to come to grips with reality in their irrational hate filled lives!  After all, the reality spouted by the “Paleolithic conservatives” keep seeming to prove that all those conservative values are of real value, versus the emotionally driven hate filled class warfare conducted by the left.  Especially since we know dystopia follows leftism like Sancho Panza followed Don Quixote - a madman - since the French Revolution.

I may have to start reading their stuff, but I will say this - when a leftie calls a former leftie a rightie - it’s probably hyperbole! Within the leftist movements there are litanies everyone must adhere to - strictly!  Any deviation – no matter how slight – is an act of sacrilege. No differences – no matter how subtle – can be tolerated. Anyone deviating must be eviscerated by the faithful, much like the show trials conducted in the Soviet Union and China - only this is done via the media, which they totally controlled until the internet. They're losing in the print media, and the electronic media is taking a beating, and the internet is killing them with.....oops.....dare I say it......facts!  Facts that have been so inconvenient in the past they were either ignored or twisted to accommodate leftist narratives.

As for their strict adherence to orthodoxy – that can be difficult since it can change in a nanosecond – which typically happens with leftists more than most realize – as in the change by the Communist Party of America (CPA) during the beginnings of WWII when Hitler and Stalin decided to divide Poland. The CPA was in love with Hitler then, and defended his every violation of international law, and would have openly defended his mass killings of civilians if they knew about it. The minute he invaded Russia he was a monster –overnight! The patterns of life repeat over and over again.

Leftists love everything that will gain them power, money, influence and control. Once they get that they’re more than happy to make an 180 degree change, and ALL must make the change on cue. If someone misses the cue and says something in opposition they must be attacked – then they "must" repent and make unending public declarations of their sorrow for their failure to – emote – because thinking is clearly verboten! And anyone thinking thoughts in opposition to their emotions must be destroyed.

Saul Alinsky commanded it in his book Rules for Radicals. Kind of like Yul Brenner as Pharoah in the movie The Ten Commnadments when he said, "So let it be written, so let it be done!" Wow! I just had a thought. It turns out the left is a faith based driven movement after all!
