Salaries of public college chiefs rise, median tops $400,000

By Atossa Araxia Abrahamian, May 12, 2013
Salaries of presidents of U.S. public universities rose almost 5 percent in the last fiscal year, even as tuition rose and student debt soared, with the median pay package topping $400,000, according to a report released on Sunday.
Penn State's Graham Spanier was the top earner last year at the time he was fired over the Jerry Sandusky scandal, according to the study by the Chronicle of Higher Education, though his compensation was inflated by $2.4 million in severance pay and deferred compensation.
The median total compensation for the public university presidents in fiscal year 2011-2012 was $441,392, the study found. Four of the presidents earned more than $1 million, and the median base pay jumped 2 percent to $373,800…..To Read More…
My Take – Does this level of pay seem obscene to everyone?  As for me….I could care less how much CEO’s are paid, whether it is in business or in education.  What I wonder about is this; could these salaries be sustained if they weren’t on the government’s dole?  Take away all that student loan money that is going to come home to roost soon; take away all that grant money to promote claptrap such as global warming and let them compete in the market place of ideas on their own and see if they deserve that money.  Let’s stop funding universities.  Let them be self-funding, just like any business, and if they are successful I don’t care how much these people make, because then they will have earned it.  As for businesses on the government’s dole…..I don’t like corporate welfare either.  Welfare is welfare, whether it is going to individuals, businesses or universities.  If they can’t be sustained without public financial support they need to go out of business.
As for universities having to support themselves by promoting what they have to offer in a true competitive atmosphere a number of things would happen.   The price of "higher education" would drop like a stone; the professors of all these institutions would start teaching again; they would finally understand what it means to run a business; that would force them to realize the stupidity of socialism; they would have to promote and justify their standards to those paying them…..i.e., the parents…..and ultimately they would all have to abandon leftist philosophies.  Oh…one more thing.  There would be far fewer students; even fewer students wasting money on valueless idiot leftist courses that are not marketable in the world of business; universities would go out of business and professors would have to go out and get real jobs.  I don’t have a problem with any of that considering the damage they have done over the last 75 years.
