QUEBEC — Thierry Vandal, president of Hydro-Québec, told a National Assembly committee hearing on the decommissioning of Gentilly-2 that shale gas killed Quebec’s only nuclear reactor. Tuesday’s hearing was called by a combined vote from the Quebec Liberals and the Coalition Avenir Québec, overruling the minority Parti Québécois government. Trois-Rivières Mayor Yves Lévesque and others in the region say Hydro-Québec’s Gentilly-2 reactor should be refurbished so it can operate for another 25 years.
“There’s been a major shift in energy markets,” Vandal explained. “It’s called shale gas.”
