Ohio Edition

Buckeye Institute News Alert - Some days ago The Buckeye Institute issued a report, Senate Budget Holds the Line on Spending and Embraces Pro-Growth Reforms, analyzing the Ohio Senate's initial version of the state budget.

The Buckeye Institute President Robert Alt praised the meaningful free-market elements included in the Senate draft: "The proposed budget maintained significant project labor agreement reform and held the line by rejecting anti-growth tax hikes on the oil and gas industry, and on the commercial activities tax. These provisions are essential to encouraging growth in Ohio."

Overall, the Senate version:
  • Embraces pro-growth income tax cuts across all brackets;
  • Maintains House language that offers meaningful project labor agreement reform that will increase competition in and lower the cost of many public construction projects;
  • Rejects raising the severance tax on Ohio's oil and gas industry;
  • Moves spending closer to The Buckeye Institute's recommended 3% annual growth than other versions of the budget;
  • Takes incremental steps toward a more rational education funding system;
  • Adopts recommendations from The Buckeye Institute to eliminate several unnecessary boards and commissions.
Although there are many pro-growth elements in the budget, some areas could be improved. For example, the Senate version includes a counterproductive tobacco tax increase; removes useful health care reform tools such as the creation of a health care cost-transparency database from the House version; and weakens a stronger House reform to the state's Controlling Board.

"The Senate proposal is another good step in the budget process, but there is no room for backtracking on key elements such as project labor agreements reform or maintaining pro-growth tax rates on key Ohio industries like oil and gas," said Greg R. Lawson, report co-author and Statehouse Liaison for The Buckeye Institute.

Ohio State University paid $337,080 to former President E. Gordon Geethe year after he retired  - Ohio State University paid $337,080 to former President E. Gordon Gee the year after he retired, even as he became president of West Virginia University.  But Ohio State officials have said the deal actually saved the school $4 million. If Gee had retired instead of taking the West Virgina job, he would have received about $5.8 million in retirement benefits over the next five years.  Gee was one of 42 former presidents who remained on the payroll of campuses they led, according to information compiled by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Gee will not receive any more money from Ohio State than what he received between June 2013 and July 2014, the period covered by the Chronicle, said Ohio State spokesman Chris Davey. The publication looked at ex-president's pay for the first time as part of its annual report of public college president compensation.  In many cases the ex-presidents were serving as professors or in advisory roles to the current leaders, the Chronicle said.

Editor's Note:  I think it might be worthwhile to reveiw some past articles on the subject of the cost of education and the cost of administration.

September 22, 2012 - OSUpresident expenses in the millions - Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee. Gee is the nation's highest-paid president. - E. Gordon Gee makes millions as president of Ohio State University, but a Dayton Daily News investigation found the university spends almost as much for Gee to travel the globe, throw parties, wine and dine donors, woo prospective faculty, hang out with students and staff and maintain a 9,600-square-foot mansion on 1.3 acres. Since returning to Columbus as the university’s president in October 2007, the 68-year-old Gee has pulled in $8.6 million in salary and compensation, making him the highest paid CEO of a public university in the country. But his expenses — hidden among hard-to-get records that the university took nearly a year to release — tally nearly as much: $7.7 million.......The Daily News investigation found the university spent more than $895,000 for gatherings at the Pizzuti House, the president’s mansion, between April 2008 and June 2011. That works out to be about $23,000 a month — a little less than the average cost of a wedding......
July 29, 2013 - Gordon Gee gets $5.8 million retirementpackage from Ohio State - Ohio State announced a $5.8 million retirement package for former president Gordon Gee. Gordon Gee's second term as Ohio State's president came to an end with his retirement; officially on July 1. A month earlier, Gee announced his decision to retire after some "self-reflection" during vacation....On Monday, the university announced a $5.8 million retirement package for Gee. The five-year contract includes a one-time payment of $1.5 million and an annual salary of $410,000. The deal also gives Gee a $300,000 annual grant for research on 21st-century education policy. When Gee announced his retirement in June, Ohio State board chairman Robert Schottenstein suggested that Gee, who holds a law degree from Columbia, might teach at the law school. He is now a full professor in the university's College of Law -- another aspect of his retirement package......
My Take - First of all this is just the tip of the iceberg but a good indication of why education is so costly and nothing has changed.  I published this article, "Student Loans: The Chickens Are Coming Home to Roost" on May 26th 2013.

On May 25, 2013 Daniel Doherty wrote an article titled, Last Dance With Sallie Mae, saying; “A new study shows that roughly 33% of millennials wish they never went to college.” He goes on to point out why; “Plainly put, since more than 50 percent of college students finance their educations with student loans -- graduating, on average, about $28,000 in the proverbial hole -- it’s easy to see why a plurality of young people wish, in retrospect, they had never attended college in the first place.” He points out the reason why. “Here’s an indication of how burdensome student loans have become:"
"Here’s an indication of how burdensome student loans have become: About one-third of millennials say they would have been better off working, instead of going to college and paying tuition. That’s a according to a new Wells Fargo study which surveyed 1,414 millennials between the ages of 22 and 32. More than half of them financed their education through student loans, and many say the if they had $10,000 the “first thing” they’d do is pay down their student loan or credit card debt. That’s no surprise when you consider student borrowing topped the $100 billion threshold for the first time in 2010, and total outstanding loans exceeded $1 trillion for the first time in 2011. Student loan debt now exceeds credit card debt in the U.S. which stands at about $798 billion."
"Delinquencies are also on the rise. The number of borrowers who are at least 90 days late on student loan payments has jumped from 8.5% in 2011 to 11.7% today, according to a study by the New York Federal Reserve."
And it gets worse! He notes that “more than 50 percent of students who take out student loans in order to enroll at “four year for-profit schools” never actually finish their studies.” That doesn't surprise me at all since a large chunk of these kids shouldn't have been in some university in the first place. Not to mention how many stupid social agenda studies they offer that in no way can get them a job that will pay enough to pay off these loans. Even if they can get jobs in those arenas, which isn't likely
The ease of obtaining student loans is at the heart of many problems. First, it is the primary reason tuition rates are as high as they are. The more the government steps in to finance higher education the more the high education institutions raise the cost. When you take a look at what the 'adminsitrative and professional' people at Ohio State University are making a year you begin to understand. Let’s start with the Universities President, E. Gordon Gee. “Although Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee is paid a hefty salary, Gee’s salary was only the third highest in the country for public university presidents for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, earned slightly less than $1.9 million as his total compensation in 2010.”
On the financial chart provided by OSU regarding salaries he is listed as $775, 008 in 2008, $802,125 in 2009 and $802, 125 in 2010. As for “total compensation’ which may not appear on the chart; we may wish to wonder about others also. Between 2008, 2009, and 2010 Ohio State University paid a total of 252 salaries averaging $390,037.49 for administrative and professional personnel. Some were medical people, some were coaches, some were administrative personnel and some were teachers of some kind. Are they worth it?

I have to believe the medicine they are teaching must be competently and effectively performed, after all, that will have practical application that can be seen early on. But the question remains; are the costs out of line?
As for the rest; I don’t know, personally I doubt it, but there is no way to know except to end the constant spiral of rising costs by eliminating the constant spiral of student loans and grants generated by some government scheme designed to get more people into higher education. Once that happens we will see the true value of these people.
As for right now; it is my view that educators at the lower level are ineffective and overpaid based on the value of the product they are turning out. If they were making nuts and bolts they would be rejected by the manufacturers. I have to believe it is even worse in higher education, especially when I see the insanity they are teaching these kids today. They end up not only ignorant, but arrogant in their ignorance.
I would be willing to bet we could get that for a whole lot less money.

Medicaid changes could hurt severely disabled Ohioans - Family members of developmentally disabled Ohioans are warning against state efforts to shrink Medicaid-funded residential facilities.  Medicaid pays for more than 5,000 Ohioans who live in Intermediate Care Facilities where they have around-the-clock nursing care but are, according to nonprofit Disability Rights Ohio, “needlessly segregated.”  Disability Advocacy Alliance, a grassroots group formed in January, sees DRO’s focus on “community integration” as a threat to ICF residents — many of whom cannot walk or speak, cannot eat without assistance and cannot control their bodily functions….. “The Kasich Administration’s budget proposal would have resulted in thousands of individuals with profound intellectual and developmental disabilities and significant needs being forced from their ICF homes,”.......

Make-A-Wish wishes for $500,000 from Ohio taxpayers - SPECIAL FUND: Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana chapter says Ohio has a “wish gap” and wants public funds to help close it. Make-A-Wish is wishing for a half-million dollars from Ohio taxpayers. The charity says a “wish gap” in Ohio can only be closed if lawmakers grant an allocation in Ohio’s budget for wish-granting organizations. The state Senate inserted a $100,000 grant in the Department of Health budget with the stipulation that the recipient agree to match the public dollars with private donations. That’s less than the $500,000 that Make-A-Wish originally asked for, but the Senate plans to let Ohio taxpayers contribute to wish-granting charities via the state income tax form, if they wish…..

Beware The Chain of Fools - A software engineer rejected for a job by GoDaddy is suing the company for discrimination. Why does he believe that the company discriminated against him? According to USA Today, he read it in the email chain included in his otherwise vanilla rejection email.  The e-mail…, which appears to be sent from a group titled the “GoDaddy Recruiting Team,” begins with a tame form letter, explaining that Connolly had not been selected for a job as a mobile IOS developer. But the note he said he saw below it in the e-mail chain packed an unusual punch. It read, “about keith he’s great for the job in skills but he looks worse for wear do we really want an obeese (sic) christian? is that what our new image requires of us.”….
Why don't discrimination laws protect everyone from abuse? - The Huffington Post asks the following question: Laws Protect Certain Classes from Workplace Abuse: Why Not Everyone?  It’s a valid question. The law only protects an employee from being treated poorly at work if he or she happens to fall into a legally protected category, which, on the federal level, includes race, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, and military status. Depending in what state one happens to work, these classes might expand to include sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status.  The article goes on to argue that “federal and state employment laws should be developed to protect all … from workplace bullying and companies from allegations of unfair treatment via clearly defined expectations for acceptable standards of behavior.”  Here’s the problem with this argument. You can’t legislate being an asshole. The world is full of them, and no set of laws, rules, or regulation will stop this mis-behavior. All it will do is either create an environment in which it is too expensive for employers to employ anyone because of the increased risk and attendant costs associates with firing anyone, or create an environment in which an employer fears managing anyone because of risk that the managed employee will cry “bully” and sue…..

Legal marijuana remains off-limits in the workplace - It is likely that when Ohioans go the polls this November, we will have the opportunity to vote on whether to amend our state constitution to permit for the medicinal and recreational use of marijuana. Meanwhile, Cleveland.com reports that business groups are concerned over certain language in the proposed ballot measure, which, if passed, would require employers to accommodate their employees’ use of legally prescribed marijuana for medical purposes. This language has employers questioning whether one could interpret the proposed amendment to mandate that employers permit certain employees to show up to work high, or, worse yet, use marijuana on-the-job. To this end, business groups have been closely watching Coates v. Dish Network [pdf], a Colorado Supreme Court case asking whether an employer must accommodate an employee’s lawful use of marijuana under that state’s laws….

The Death of Mr. Alan Caruba – I will never forget you Sir!

Posted on June 17, 2015 by TexasFred

Last Monday the world lost a great man and I lost the most wonderful friend I have ever had, Alan Caruba.

Alan had a great many fans and admirers of his work, his writings and opinions, and many of them have been contacting me regarding services for Alan, wishing to pay their last respects and so forth.

I talked to Alan’s lawyer at 2:15PM Texas time and was informed that Alan had specified his wishes that in the event of his death he wanted his body to be cremated and he wanted there to be NO services.

There were no other instructions, not one word regarding his ashes.

A couple of weeks ago Alan was admitted to the hospital and underwent what was, in Alan’s opinion, a bit of surgery to fix a slightly torn intestine that was due to diverticulitis.

Last week I talked to Alan several times, I was worried about him and how weak he sounded and when I called on Monday his lawyer answered the phone and advised me that Alan had passed.

Today I was able to talk at some length with the attorney and he gave me the information on Alan’s wishes. He also gave me the details of Alan’s death.

It appears that Alan fell and struck something causing him to bleed profusely and it appears that he couldn’t get up but was trying to make his way to the bathroom. That is where he died.

He was DOWN with NO HELP but Alan Caruba was a fighter until the very end. I would have expected no less.

Rest in Peace my friend, you ARE loved and missed!

Mr. Alan Caruba Oct. 9, 1937 — June 15, 2015

By Fred Witzell
Alan Caruba

Today the world lost a great writer and Patriot, a Veteran of the United States Army, and a true gentleman with a wit that was unmatched. Alan Caruba was the author of Warning Signs, his blog, and with that blog he taught many aspiring bloggers how to do it right! I was one of those individuals.

Alan Caruba was my friend and mentor, he was my sounding board, he was the reason I kept on blogging when I felt that there was nothing left to say and that folks like us were only *preaching to the choir*, but most of all, Alan Caruba was my FRIEND and I loved that gentleman as if he were my father.

Today I am truly heartbroken.
Alan Caruba was an American public relations counselor and freelance writer who is a frequent critic of environmentalism, Islam, homosexuality and research on global warming.
Career — In the late 1970s Caruba founded the PR firm The Caruba Organization, and in 1990, the National Anxiety Center, which identifies itself as “a clearinghouse for information about ‘scare campaigns’ designed to influence public policy and opinion” on such subjects as global warming, ozone depletion and DDT. From 1984 until 2004, he ran The Boring Institute, a “spoof” satirizing the media by releasing annual lists of the year’s “boring” celebrities. From 1994 until 2004, he was director of communications for the American Policy Center. He is an adjunct scholar at the Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise, a wise use think tank in Bellevue, Washington.
Alan and I spent a lot of time talking, we took strength from each other and our hard-core opinions, but Alan had a softer side too. Alan worshipped his mother, Rebecca Caruba, and he talked about her in depth to me; how she was a gourmet chef and a connoisseur of fine wines and how that played a part in his entire life, long after his mother was gone.
I have lost several very good friends that I met through blogging, my good friends Bill Ghent and G.M. Roper just to mention a couple, and I learned a great deal from these gentlemen too. They were also good friends with Alan Caruba, maybe that’s why we all stuck together like we did.

Save me a seat my friends, I’ll be coming that way soon enough and I look forward to the tales we’ll tell!

Alan Caruba: A candle that goes on flickering in the dark

By Judi McLeod June 16, 2015

Some people leave behind legacies that go on forever after their life on Earth. These are the ones far too lively for an ordinary obituary.

Patriot, writer and veteran of the United States Army, Alan Caruba is one of those rare souls who soldier on in the human heart long after they’re gone.

He signed all his emails ‘Uncle Alan’ and was with Canada Free Press (CFP) longer than any other writer. His friend Texas Fred of the TexasFred Blog sent word today that Alan Caruba passed away on June 15, in his 77th year.

Imaginary black borders framed my thinking and seemed to match the rainy, windswept day on display outside my windows.

Most every day over the last 12-plus years, a column from ‘Uncle Alan’ was always there in my emails, but not today. Thinking that they wouldn’t be there ever again had me laid low in a most painful grief. Then somehow just remembering that Alan has joined his late friend, the great patriot and writer Henry Lamb, who died in 2012 came back to me as a comfort.

It got me to thinking how Alan and Henry would be sending down bolts of well-aimed criticism on the Pope’s environmental encyclical from their new abode.

It was Alan and Henry who taught CFP all it knows about the United Nations liberty-destroying Agenda 21. Both writers, who researched its every detail and intent, were godfathers on the subject of the dangers of Agenda 21 on human society, never letting up on their written warnings.

Not sure whether he ever fully realized it, but it was Alan Caruba who gave Toronto Free Press (TFP), the investigative print journal predecessor to CFP, its international wings. Caruba, who later brought in Henry Lamb, taught us that there were bigger rogues working against society at the U.N. than the school board trustees and city hall councillors that still plague City of Toronto politics to the current

Caruba opened both our eyes and files to the devious empire building of Al Gore, Maurice Strong, Mikhail Gorbachev, et al, and life at our newspaper was never to be the same.

Caruba’s was the first American byline to appear regularly on our print publication, where he was popular with readers from the beginning.

No one poked bigger holes in the U.N.-sanctioned scam known as man-made global warming/climate change than the CO2 savvy ‘Uncle Alan’.

When Caruba ventured our way, he was already a successful Public Relations executive.

Since 1990, he had been running the National Anxiety Center, self-identified as “a clearinghouse for information about ‘scare campaigns’ designed to influence public policy and opinion” on subjects including global warming, ozone depletion and DDT”.

No Hollywood star zooming in to global warming conferences by jet got a pass from his well-read critiques, as he sent more than a few chuckles up through the ozone layer with his writings in ‘The Boring Institute’, a lively blog that served up a steady menu of spoof, satirizing the mainstream media with annual lists of the year’s most “boring” celebrities.

The years 1994 until 2004, found Caruba as Director of Communications for the American Policy Center. He will be sorely missed at the Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise, in Bellevue, Washington, where he was an adjunct scholar.

It was so typical of Alan Caruba that he was an inspiration to other writers and bloggers, correcting their copy and goading them on with encouraging words, even though he was filing daily columns to CFP. We discovered this not from ‘Uncle Alan’,but from the writers he went so far out of his way to help.

A hero to so many patriots, the biggest hero of Alan’s life was his mother, Rebecca Caruba of whom he was so proud.

Rebecca was a gourmet chef who wrote her own cookbooks and a connoisseur of fine wines par excellence. The things he learned from his elegant mother would last him a lifetime.

During the October 2012 Super-storm Sandy, Caruba lived for over two weeks in a dark lighted only by the candle of his highly contagious humour. We checked in with him through his cell phone every morning that turned out to be calls during which he tried to cheer us up, always telling us “Don’t worry”. This, too, will pass.”

Even with the bad news coming out of Washington, D.C., Alan Caruba was unfailing in his belief that America would survive the domestic enemies working to take her down, and that Al Gore-Maurice Strong-style global warming/ climate change would someday be called out for the money-making scam it truly is.

Little did he know that his beliefs would inspire and encourage me on the same day I learned of his death.

Dear ‘Uncle Alan’,you will forever be the flickering candle of hope in so many lives.

Civil Asset Forfeiture Is A Blatant Violation of the U.S. Constitution. Why Is That So Hard To Grasp?

Editor's Note: Monday was the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. This was a law that was to govern government, just as the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land to govern the U.S. Government. It's failing horribly because legislators have come to believe they can pass laws that ignores Constitutional protections and rights....rights that are supposed to be unalienable bestowed on us by Almighty God and not granted to us by the U.S. Government and be taken away by the whims of government officials.  It’s failing because leaders are simply ignoring their oaths of office to protect and defend the Constitution.  That makes their actions criminal and therefore impeachable as ‘high crimes”.  A high crime is a crime of high office and includes failing to meet the obligations of their office to which by oath they swore.   If there ever was an obvious case of this failure are laws regarding “civil asset forfeiture”!

Road Pirates -- Assemble!"Desert Snow" is Coming to Idaho
By William N. Grigg

It isn’t often that honest people receive detailed intelligence about a planned gathering of violent men who steal for a living and kill with impunity. An event of that kind will occur from August 10-12th here in Idaho.   In fact, I can provide the specific address of the armed robbers’ summit -- 700 South Stratford Drive in Meridian. The location is conspicuously marked and easy to find: It is the Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Academy, which will host a two-day session of Desert Snow’s “Phase 2015” asset forfeiture workshop.

“Civil asset forfeiture,” for the mercifully uninitiated, is a procedure in which police officers and the agencies that employ them steal money and property from people who have never been convicted of a crime, and quite often never face criminal charges. The agency designates the desired property as “proceeds” of illicit activity and then files an “in rem” civil lawsuit against it – not the owner of the property, but the property itself. In this process, the burden of proof is placed on the victim, rather than the perpetrator.

Fighting an act of state-licensed larceny of this kind is prohibitively expensive and frequently futile, which means that the privileged plunderers generally make out like the bandits they unfailingly prove themselves to be.....To Read More.....

How Philadelphia Law Enforcement Makes Millions By Seizing Cash and Property From Residents

For Philadelphia law enforcement, a tool known as civil asset forfeiture has proven to be a boon to the city’s coffers, according to a new study that found $2.2 million in seized cash benefited the Philadelphia district attorney’s office.  The report from the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania examined forfeitures taking place in the City of Brotherly Love, which is known for its rampant seizures of cash and property from innocent citizens.  In 2012 alone, Pennsylvania law enforcement officials seized nearly $14 million through civil asset forfeiture laws, according to a report from the state attorney general’s office.

Additionally, through the Justice Department’s Equitable Sharing Program, which enables local and state law enforcement to share in up to 80 percent of the proceeds from forfeitures, Pennsylvania law enforcement agencies generated $10.8 million from seizures that same year.....To Read More....

Mark Levin: Why Does GOP Assist In Obama’s ‘Diabolical and Destructive’ Agenda?

On his nationally syndicated radio talk show, Mark Levin asked why Republicans in Congress “time and again persist in assisting an agenda that is both diabolical and destructive?”  “Why did they give Obama the budget he wanted? Why did they stop fighting on unconstitutional executive amnesty? Why did they surrender the treaty provision of the Constitution? Why did they surrender the power of the purse provision of the Constitution? “ Levin asked in his June 10 broadcast.  “And why now do they seek to give this man - this man who is violating our Constitution, this man who is destroying our way of life - fast track authority?”….To Read More….

To win, Republican candidates must be strong on energy

Posted by Marita Noon @ Breitbart

New polling emphasizes support for traditional energy concerns has become a partisan issue. Large majorities of Republicans favor key energy issues—but voters of every ideological stripe say energy will be an important part of their voting decisions.

Hickman Analytics Inc., for the Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), has done polling on energy issues in several key states: Iowa, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. While the exact questions asked are not identical in each of the six states, the responses are so similar that assumptions can be made.

For the 2016 presidential candidates, lessons should be learned—to win, Republican candidates must be strong on energy.

In all states polled, the majority of respondents indicated that energy issues will be at or near the top when asked: “Looking ahead, how important are energy issues in terms of how you will vote in the Presidential election next year?” In each state, except West Virginia, 80 percent or more answered: “very important” or “somewhat important.” In West Virginia, while still a majority, the percentage is only 54—though a smaller percentage of West Virginians, 10 percent, claim energy issues will be: “not very important” or “not important at all.”

The polling took place in Iowa and New Hampshire in April, South Carolina in May, and in Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina in June.

In Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, Hickman asked how they feel about “allowing offshore oil and natural gas drilling north of Alaska, in U.S. waters inside the Arctic Circle.” Overall, a majority of registered voters support it, but opposition is higher among Democrats.

The numbers on Arctic drilling break out this way:
Iowa
New Hampshire
South Carolina
Republicans
74% support, 10% oppose
70% support, 18% oppose
76% support, 16% oppose
Independents
48% support, 38% oppose
54% support, 35% oppose
60% support, 32% oppose
Democrats
34% support, 49% oppose
34% support, 54% oppose
51% support, 29% oppose

In Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina, Hickman asked about the Atlantic Coast pipeline project—a 550-mile pipeline that will bring natural gas from West Virginia through Virginia and North Carolina—and found that support is strong and extends across almost every group. As with Arctic drilling, Hickman found that support for this important energy infrastructure project is stronger among Republicans, but even among those who self-identify as liberal, more support than oppose it.

The numbers on the Atlantic Coast pipeline project break out this way:

Virginia
West Virginia
North Carolina
Republicans
74% support, 12% oppose
79% support, 12% oppose
76% support, 9% oppose
Independents
54% support, 24% oppose
66% support, 25% oppose
56% support, 25% oppose
Democrats
43% support, 38% oppose
67% support, 20% oppose
41% support, 37% oppose

When asked why they support the Atlantic Coast pipeline project, “jobs” was mentioned most frequently with “a positive impact on the economy” being next. “Contribution to energy independence” was also mentioned.

Presidential candidates can learn from the Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina numbers and a similar response could be assumed in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina—though they were not asked a parallel question on Arctic drilling.

The lesson? Republican and Independent voters understand that energy projects create jobs, help the economy and energy security.

In Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina, Hickman asked about other energy issues, such as coal-fueled power plants, the Keystone pipeline, offshore drilling, and hydraulic fracturing. Again, support among Republicans and Independents—even many Democrats—is strong on a wide range of energy issues.

“As the primary season approaches, presidential candidates will need to take a strong stance on energy issues for the 2016 election,” CEA President David Holt said. “As we have seen in the past, the success of candidates in 2016 will hinge on their ability to promote issues that foster economic and job growth, while ensuring safety and the protection of our environment. This can be achieved through the promotion of energy infrastructure and production, which will contribute to U.S. self-sufficiency, stimulate the economy, and create jobs.”

Energy provides Republican candidates with an opportunity to stand with voters and offer contrast to Hillary Clinton—whose previous speeches indicate that she will continue President Obama’s energy policies. At her Roosevelt Rally, she repeated one of Obama’s reoccurring themes: “climate change, one of the defining threats of our time.”

As the Hickman/CEA polling shows, the frequently touted fixes for climate change—opposing coal-fueled power plants and blocking fossil-fuel development and infrastructure—are in direct conflict with what most Americans, especially Republicans and Independents, want.

The Hickman/CEA conclusions are supported by previous polls.

Earlier this year, Pew Research Center did its annual Public Policy Priorities Survey, “Dealing with global warming” remained a low priority—with only “Dealing with global trade issues” being lower. However, when looking at the issues to discern the partisan differences, the message is obvious. A slight majority of Democrats, 54 percent, view global warming as a top priority, compared to 15 percent of Republicans (an 8 point drop from 2007) and 39 percent of Independents (a 1 point drop from 2007).

Similarly, a March 2015 Gallup poll on “U.S. concern about environmental threats” found that “Americans worry least about global warming.” Again the partisan divide is telling: in 2000, 29 percent of Republicans/Republican leaners worried about “global warming or climate change”; in 2015, 13 percent—a 16 percent drop. For Democrats/Democrat leaners: 2000, 48 percent; in 2015, 52 percent—a 4-point increase.

“It is clear from the Hickman/CEA polling,” Holt added, “that energy policy will be top of mind when voters cast their ballots in this upcoming election. Voters clearly support the development of energy infrastructure, such as the Atlantic Coast Pipeline project. In order to win, candidates will have to make clear to voters that they understand and support the issues voters care about."

As we head into the important 2016 election, it is imperative that whoever becomes the 45th president understands energy. Gratefully, as the Hickman/CEA polling indicates, the American public understands the importance of energy and is prepared to vote accordingly.

Is it possible the term free trade is an oxymoron

By Rich Kozlovich

Thanks to one of my regular readers, Maury Siskel, I have questions that needs to be answered.
  • If free trade is free why do governments need to create a treaties or agreements?
  • If trade is actually to be free why is it politicians who aren't involved in business and have little or no practical experience in business are negotiating these agreements?
  • If trade is actually free then why can't the parties actually doing the trading make any agreements that are workable for their needs, just as you would with the local grocer?
  • If free trade is actually free then why are there conditions and restrictions in these "free" trade agreements?
  • Is it possible that politicians who claim they’re all in favor of "free" trade are actually misleading the public and believe in controlled trade that benefit favored parties?
  • If this was done by private firms wouldn’t that be considered and illegal effort to control the market and prices?
  • Some have claim these trade agreements are a sell out of American soveriegnty by the nation's leaders.  If that's so isn't there a name for that?  Isn't that called treason?
Just a thought!

"we don’t pass laws anymore. We pass frameworks for the fourth branch of government to create the law."

Leftist Greens Appeal to Pope. They Must Really Be Desperate!

Benny Peiser's Global Warming Policy Foundation Reports That the UK Council Recommends Green Light For British Shale Revolution While Pope Francis Declares Global Warming ‘Mostly Man-Made’

Editor's Note: Going back to the end of the 19th century when European socialism was attempting to make inroads in the United States they had a foundational difficulty. It was atheistic in nature and at that time religious belief was the standard. So they adopted the moniker - Progressives - changing themselves into an angel of light by making religion the binding force for the progressivism. Shocked?  That’s where the Progressive Gospel came from.  That's history, and you may wish to read Jonah Goldberg's account of this in his book Liberal Fascism. But after WWII they didn't need these heretical religionists any longer and kicked them to the curb.  However, they’re not above trotting out leftist heretics from among these outwardly religious groups when it suits their needs, as they’ve done with the Pope. The Pope will find these new found friends will abandon him as soon as it's convenient, and then mock him, his church, and the idea of a supreme being. And what will all of this insanity from the Pope have gained him or the world? Nothing!  But we need to understand this.  This is a desperate last ditch effort on the part of the green left to promote this massive hoax by binding religion to their cause, because facts are destroying their cause around them.  So much for the brilliance of a Jesuit trained mind and Papal infallibility.

UK Council Recommends Green Light For British Shale Revolution - Shale gas firm Cuadrilla Resources received a boost in its plan to start fracking in north west England on Monday when local government recommended that its application to drill up to four exploration wells should be granted. The company’s project at Preston New Road near Blackpool could become Britain’s first shale gas production wells, and could lead a drive to develop the unconventional resource as Britain’s North Sea gas and oil production declines. --Reuters, 15 June 2015

Britain’s Crazy Climate Policy: Forests Go Up In Smoke - Where have all our woods gone? Up in smoke – as the new trendy ‘green’ wood-burning stoves and boilers (funded by tax millions) are being fuelled by birches and oaks… leaving swathes of Britain barren. --David Rose, Mail on Sunday, 14 June 2015

Pope Francis Declares Global Warming ‘Mostly Man-Made’  - Pope Francis said Thursday he is convinced that global warming is "mostly" man-made and that he hopes his upcoming encyclical on the environment will encourage negotiators at a climate change meeting in Paris to make "courageous" decisions to protect God's creation. While in the Philippines, Francis will meet with survivors of the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan, which the government has said was an example of the extreme weather conditions that global warming has wrought. --Nicol Winfielde, Associated Press, 15 June 2015

Germany Must Accept Poland’s Coal Security Needs - President-Elect's Aide - The foreign policy adviser to Poland's president-elect has signalled a more assertive approach to Germany, saying Berlin must end its opposition to NATO military bases on Polish soil and also accept Warsaw's wish to protect its coal industry. Szczerski made clear Duda would challenge Germany on European Union energy policy too, where Berlin is a major advocate of renewable forms of energy and of cutting the bloc's reliance on carbon-emitting fuels such as coal. "Berlin must agree to such adjustments of EU's climate and energy policy that will allow the continued mining of Polish coal," he said. --Reuters, 14 June 2015
