The NAACP appeals to the Justice Department on behalf of vacationing lawmakers.

 Of all the silly ploys the left has pulled lately, this one takes the proverbial cake. The NAACP, which used to be a leading civil rights group, is calling on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate Texas state Republican lawmakers for threatening to have Texas Democrats arrested. Will the plea fall on deaf ears?

NAACP Cries ‘Foul’

When Gov. Greg Abbott called a special session last month to vote on a new election law and other legislative priorities, a gaggle of Texas lawmakers fled the state for a taxpayer-funded vacation in Washington, D.C. Their absence meant there could be no quorum in the state legislature preventing a vote on the bill. In response, Abbott as well as other GOP officials threatened to arrest the Democrat lawmakers and compel them to attend the proceedings. This action did not sit well with the NAACP. Associated Press reported:

“NAACP President Derrick Johnson sent the letter late Wednesday to Kristen Clarke, who runs the Justice Department’s civil rights division. In the letter, Johnson said he had conferred with at least three of the Democrats who had been threatened with arrest and agreed that federal authorities should step in to investigate.”

In the letter, Johnson also argued: “At this time when political minorities are threatened with being rounded up and imprisoned in Texas, the eyes of the country and the world are upon DOJ and how it deals with Texas’s actions.”

On Wednesday, the Texas House of Representatives issued civil arrest warrants for each Democrat avoiding the legislature. According to AP: “Refusing to attend legislative sessions is a violation of House rules — a civil offense, not a criminal one, leaving the power the warrants carry to get Democrats back to the chamber unclear, even for the Republicans who invoked it.”

Johnson argued that the DOJ “could determine that the Texas governor and Republican members of the Texas House have openly conspired” to violate civil rights law. The NAACP head also averred that if the DOJ does not act, “it is more than likely that those intent upon subverting democracy in Texas will be successful in their efforts” and that the state “will be able to jail and detain those who stand up to those in power.”

Where Will This Lead?

The possibility that the DOJ will heed the NAACP’s request seems like a longshot. Texas is not the only state in which state lawmakers can be arrested for avoiding the legislature. Indeed, in 2019, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown ordered the state police to round up Republicans who fled to Idaho to scupper a vote on climate change legislation. Oddly enough, the NAACP did not have any complaints back then.

Go figure.

Furthermore, it is worth pointing out how unlikely it is that anyone at the DOJ will believe Johnson’s contention that the state government in Texas will become some kind of tyrannical force, locking up anyone who disagrees with it. But either way, one must give him credit for trying.

Activist Judge Throws the Fugitive Texas Democrats a Lifeline

Gov. Greg Abbott has officially called another special session, forcing the Texas Democrats who fled to block a voter integrity bill to continue their foolhardy charade. But now, an activist judge has stepped in to throw them a lifeline.

The Democrat has signed an order to block enforcement of the arrest warrants put out for the Texas Democrats. Those arrests are allowed under the Texas Constitution as a way to force the appearance of lawmakers who refuse to show up to do their jobs.

This appears to allow the fugitive Democrats to return home from Washington, DC now with no way to compel them to provide a quorum as the law requires. In other words, Texas government will never function again because now the minority party can literally just not show up to work anytime they want to stop a piece of legislation. The fact that Republicans have a massive majority in the Texas House becomes irrelevant. The entire legislative system in the Lone Star State has been nullified because a judge said so. Talk about tyranny.

The caveat here is that the current order signed by the judge only lasts two weeks. At that point, the arrests would conceivably be allowed again.  My Take -  First of all this is a Separation of Powers issue.  Since arresting them is part of the House rules, and the legislatures make up their own rules the courts have no jurisdiction, If I were governor, I say that loudly, I'd say it publicly, and then ignore this idiot's ruling and threaten to arrest him for obstruction of justice if he makes any attempt to enforce that ruling, and then do it.

State Rep. Senfronia Thompson is among the Democrat legislators who abandoned their jobs in Texas to block election integrity bills in the ongoing special session. They are holed up in a posh hotel, spreading COVID and asking for care packages despite the fact that all of them are wealthy and powerful legislators.

If they didn’t think to bring underwear or enough salsa to get by (but they didn’t ask for chips?), that’s on them and the staffs they pay to do everything for them.

After her encounter Thursday with Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Thompson may wish she’d stayed in Texas. The South Carolina Republican asked Thompson a series of straightforward questions about what you need an ID to do in Texas and elsewhere — board a chartered plane as the Democrats did and get inside the U.S. House chamber where that hearing took place are among them — and how many people of various backgrounds support voter ID.

Mace first asks how prevalent the need for ID is in Texas, which like most if not all states requires ID for renting an apartment, opening a bank account, and purchasing alcohol and tobacco products. She then zeroes in on the questions regarding elections that Thompson was either unprepared to answer or intentionally whiffed.

At the 4:10 mark, Mace asks Thompson if she knows the percentage of Democrats who support voter ID. Thompson admits she does not but says, “I don’t think it’s a whole lot.”

Where are the Texas fugitives?

Every morning, I pick up my Dallas Morning News and check the front page.  I can't recall the last time that "The Texas 57" were a headline or front page story.  I don't see them anywhere.   Maybe they are busy Zooming each other in the nation's capital.

President Biden won't see them.  I think that's common sense given that the President is 78 and you don't want him around people who have got COVID.  Nevertheless, the "57" are not happy............The "Texas 57" are facing a few realities:Nobody is talking about them.  At the same time, they get more hysterical every time that someone turns on a microphone; and, the U.S. Congress is not helping much, according to this analysis in the Texas Tribune:    ..........To Read More....

My Take - Let's pause and enjoy this schadenfreude moment.  

Okay, now, let's think about this.  What do they think is going to happen to them when they return to Texas?  

First, they're stiffing their constituents.  The claim there's no taxpayer money in involved for this little hissy fit of childish petulance, but the governor has kept the Texas legislature in session until they return and do their jobs.  Cost?  A million or more, and all of these Texas Legislators, who are still getting paid their salaries, are also getting a per diem rate of $221.00 a day as long as the legislative session continues.  Even if they're not in the state, and now Texas Democrat party is asking people for donations to provide "care packages" for these misfits.  

I wonder just how well this is going to play with their constituents back in Texas in the next election?

 Front Page ‘News’ of the day is coming directly from a sort of ongoing tennis match between devious Democrats and the news meisters controlling everything that folk get to see and read.  SMACK! Texas Democrat Compares Abbott's Threat of Arrest to Slavery

State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, one of the Texas Democrats who fled the state to block passage of a GOP election bill, compared the threat of arrest from Gov. Greg Abbott upon their return to slaves who tried to escape plantations.   "We refuse to be a hostage,” she said during a speech in Alexandria, Virginia, on Friday. 

"I know there are search warrants out for us and I'm ready to be arrested," Thompson continued. "What do you do to a slave if you don't do nothing but arrest them when they flee. We fled Texas and if they want to arrest me, go ahead. I’m ready to be arrested."...........To Read More......

 

Texas Dems’ tangled web

On Monday night another Texas Democrat in the celebrated caucus fleeing Austin to shut down the legislature tested positive for Coronavirus. Having made the rounds in Washington to gladhand fellow Democrats in the corridors of power, the caucus from hell is also spreading the virus. In Washington the caucus has met with kacklin’ Kamala Harris and others to advance the unconstitutional federal takeover of election law.

Kacklin’ Kamala has since tested negative for the virus, but others are kacklin’ no more. They include a White House official and staffer for Nancy Pelosi who tested positive after the staff member helped the delegation around the Capitol last week, according to the Axios story here. Both the White House official and the Pelosi staffer attended the same rooftop reception at the Eaton DC hotel on K Street last week.

A supportive Texas Tribune story drily notes that “the confirmed cases have prompted the delegation to make adjustments for how to continue having such conversations.” If you can stop laughing for a few minutes — if you can put yourself in their place and imagine yourself an exhibitionistic political fool — you may find it all deeply poignant.............To Read More....

Texas Election Reform Bill Passes Senate Despite Fleeing Dems, ‘Chaos’ in House as Arrest Warrants Await

The Texas Senate passed a voting reform bill on Tuesday. Despite missing Democrats, the election integrity bill passed with enough state senators present along party lines 18-4. Texas House Democrats who fled the state rather than vote on the bill have warrants for their arrest should they return to the state prior to the expiration of the legislative term on August 7.

Governor Greg Abbott has vowed to call special session after special session to get the election bill, as well as measures like bail reform, passed through the Texas Legislature. “The Senate’s election bill, SB1, passed 18 to 4 after several hours of debate Tuesday afternoon,” CBS reported on the bill’s passage. 

“Republican State Senator Bryan Hughes, the bill’s author, said the bill cracks down on the potential for cheating and touted the expanded early voting hours in some counties and opportunities for voters to fix small issues with their mail-in ballots.”

“How much fraud’s okay? None. How much suppression’s okay? None,” Hughes said. “That’s why this bill makes it easy to vote and hard to cheat.”...............

“As soon as they come back in the state of Texas, they will be arrested, they will be cabined inside the Texas Capitol until they get their job done,”.............

Here We Go: Major Texas Democrat Stripped of Leadership Post for Fleeing the State

State Rep. Joe Moody (D-El Paso) has been stripped of his position as speaker pro tem in the Texas House following his decision to flee the state in order to stymie the ongoing special session that Gov. Greg Abbott called.

House Speaker Dade Phelan, a Beaumont Republican, announced the removal of Moody as speaker pro tem in a memo Thursday morning before the House was set to return on Thursday. He gave no statement but said the removal was effective immediately.

“The most important titles in my life will never change: Dad, Husband, El Pasoan,” Moody said in a statement. “Nothing political has ever even cracked the top three, so nothing has changed about who I am or what my values are.”

Moody is (or was) one of Speaker Phelan’s closest Democrat allies. Two of the terms he used to describe himself — Dad and husband — are gender-specific terms forbidden by the rules adopted by the Democratic leadership in the United States House of Representatives...........To Read More...

My Take - Interesting piece that exposes the Democrat party's hypocrisy.  Allegedly the Democrat Party now all of a sudden supports voter I.D., but at the same time Democrats in state legislatures are fighting it like the plague, and it is a plague to their party, for without voter fraud they can't win except in soviet socialist states like New York and California.  Not to mention the fact Kamala Harris supports and lauds their leaving Texas refusing to do the job taxpayers are paying them to do.  Hypocrisy, lies, and childish tantrums.  Three excellent words to define their party.
