One Year After US-Cuba Ties Restored, ‘Human Rights Dialogue’ Yet to Take Place By Patrick Goodenough
One year since the U.S. re-established diplomatic relations with Cuba and four months since President Obama traveled to Havana, the two sides have yet to hold a dialogue on human rights that was announced during the historic visit. A senior State Department official said Wednesday discussions were underway to set dates and an agenda for the “human rights dialogue,” and expressed certainty that it would be held before the end of 2016. In a teleconference briefing, the official described human rights as a “complex and thorny” issue, adding that “we’re making slow and steady progress.” More broadly, the official said, the U.S. raises human rights in all interactions with the Cuban government.........
