Native American Reservations: “Socialist Archipelago”

Mises Daily: Friday, April 26, 2013 by Andrei Znamenski
Imagine a country that has a corrupt authoritarian government. In that country no one knows about checks and balances or an independent court system. Private property is not recognized in that country either. Neither can one buy or sell land. And businesses are reluctant to bring investments into this country. Those who have jobs usually work for the public sector. Those who don’t have jobs subsist on entitlements that provide basic food. At the same time, this country sports a free health care system and free access to education. Can you guess what country it is? It could be the former Soviet Union, Cuba, or any other socialist country of the past.

Indian Country is a generic metaphor that writers and scholars use to refer to the archipelago of 310 Native American reservations, which occupy 2 percent of the U.S. soil. My Take – This article is profound and provocative, especially once you get past the opening paragraph, which I consider a somewhat unappealing comparison.  You need to read that paragraph a couple of times to see what it is he is really trying to say.  The rest of the article is an excellent example of outlining how the socialist dreams of the early 20th century, practiced by all the great socialist leaders, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini and FDR failed and why.  The question we should all be asking and striving for understanding on is.....why don't they leave the reservation?  That is an important and thought provoking challenge, especially in light of recent election events.  Think a while on this!  Then ask yourself this question.  What exactly is it that most people want?  Then re-read the article!
