Conservatism, Interesting Perspectives

Mar 22, 2019 Posted by

A national symposium was reported about in a recent issue of the Washington Examiner’s magazine, of nine invited prominent writers to address the question: “What does it mean to be a conservative in the age of Trump?”

Each of the participants regarded themselves as conservatives, but a Venn diagram of their stated positions reflected little overlap and a surprisingly wide divergence. Hillsdale College President, Dr. Larry Arnn, opined that “President Trump preeminently understands that the most important conservative idea today is the need to conserve America itself,” for “if we [continue] politically in the direction of the previous three decades, we [will] lose our country.”

National Review Institute senior fellow, David French, wrote that “the conservative in the age of Trump is … wandering the uncomfortable wilderness without a tribe.

I must wonder, are we so disorganized that we don’t know what we are losing? Will the TEA Party rise up again? Author David Frum, a tough critic of the President responded that to be a conservative in this epoch is “to feel culturally powerless.”

Why should we feel powerless when the Democrats are steering hard to the Left and basically imploding?

Senior editor of the Federalist, Mollie Hemingway, argues that conservatism,“ is about rejecting [the] rigged system,” meaning, I think, the “deep state” bureaucracy that has so long controlled Washington politics. Other participants included Sen. Ben Sasse, Erick Erickson, James Antle, Henry Olsen and Alexandra DeSanctis.........To Read More....

My Take - Many who refer to themselves as conservatives are lost because they're not real conservatives with firm moral and intellectual foundations.  As the article points out:
"Democrats talk about legalizing marijuana, murdering babies, welcoming Jihadists, seizing our guns, Soc. Sec  payments to illegals, demanding the popular vote over the Electoral vote and supporting ignorant Marxist puppet loons like AOC who wants everything free for all with no idea how to pay for it, short of the common tactic used by all governments… steal it from the producers. This applies to Bernie and the high cheek boned, blond Indian Princess, Elizabeth Warren. While other Democrat contenders may lurk in the shadows, they only try to out promise the other guy with what they would do with our money. These are simple people, you know, Morons."
Not to mention the "absurd ideas to side-step the Electoral College, pack the Supreme Court, lower the voting age to 16, and divide the political rubble heap of California into three or four states to create more Democratic senators."

How could any legitimate conservative feel they're "wandering in the wilderness" or "culturally powerless" in the face of all that?  Every one of these initiatives should all be fuses that light fires in every real conservative.  The rest are all phonies and traitors to the very concept of conservatism, like John Kasich, John, McCain and a host of others with stunningly slippery moral convictions.
