There was an article linked in Greenie Watch today called, Being green is God's work, says Costello. The Reverend Tim Costello, head of World Vision Australia, claims that "ALL Bible-reading Christians" should be ''greenies'' because ''creation carries the imprint of the maker''. Among other things "Mr. Costello argued that ''creation care is a fundamental building block of Christian faith, so it is incumbent on all Christians to say we have to take this [global warming] seriously.''
I know there is a certain attractiveness to this kind of thinking, but true Biblical “creation care” and going green are philosophies with two diametrically opposing goals. He claims his demand for ‘creation care’ is Biblically based, yet the Biblical admonition regarding this is; "God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." (Genesis 1:28 NIV)
This isn’t ‘going green’. The goal of the greenies varies between the ultra radicals who believe that mankind is the world’s ultimate virus and must be eliminated to the “moderate” wing of the movement that merely wants to eliminate at least four billion people. And they all want to end capitalism and industrialization and force everyone to 'go green', which is another term for embracing primitive life styles. Or, I should say it is a term that embraces suicide for much of humanity.
All that Biblical subduing and filling didn’t mean abusing. We take care of the natural world in order to prosper, and those countries that have prospered the most have done so as a result of capitalism and industrialization. They are also the countries that have worked the hardest to have good environmental laws. And the reason why is because they can afford it! The most primitive (as close to green as you can get and still be alive) are the worst abusers of the environment because they can’t afford to worry about anything except survival.
The Bible is all about worshiping the creator. Environmentalism (green) is all about worshiping the creation. So what is the answer to this seeming contradiction in understanding? “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” (2 Timothy 4:3 NIV) You can’t fix stupid!
As for the rest of us; we must be prepared to defend against this kind of thinking no matter the source by working to develop the necessary intellectual responses. There is a certain attractiveness to these kinds of arguments, but we must never stop remembering that to embrace global warming is accept that it is caused by mankind, that it will destroy the world, and that mankind must abandon most if not all forms of industrialization and prosperity. To promote such stupidity as Anthropogenic Climate Change as a Biblical obligation is to promote an outcome that is diametrically opposed to Biblical admonition. And to tout this now that the scientists who have promoted this are being exposed for who and what they are; fraudulent hucksters and junk scientists; you have to know there is something wrong with these people. I wonder if what is wrong can be called...well....heresy?
For the non-believers among my readers; I say to accept “green” is madness. For the believers among my readers; I say that to accept “green” is heresy and madness!
