Police hiring lags as violent crime rises in San Antonio

Short more than 200 officers, the San Antonio Police Department is ramping up recruiting. But barely one in 10 applicants makes the cut.  The police union says the thin blue line is fraying amid rising violent crime in America’s seventh largest city.  A new SAPD academy class began Monday with 51 cadets – the biggest since 2012. Another 38 candidates are in an ongoing class.  To get those 89 trainees, SAPD Lt. Steven Trujillo said the department vetted 728 applicants. “We’re reaching out to everyone statewide and nationwide,” Trujillo told Watchdog.org.
